ഉണ്ണി ആർ എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരനെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ഒരു പുസ്തകമെങ്കിലും വായിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള വായനാപ്രേമികളെ പ്രത്യേക പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തലിൻ്റെ ആവശ്യമില്ല. ഒരേ സമയം പല വിധ മാനങ്ങളെ പറയാതെ പറഞ്ഞു പോവുന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരനാണ് ഉണ്ണി ആർ. ഭൂതം, ഡിവൈൻ കോമഡി, ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടവൻ, ജലം, സച്ചിദാനന്ദം, വൃത്തിയും വെളിച്ചവുമുള്ള ഒരിടം, സാത്താൻ്റെ വചനങ്ങൾ, ഒരു ഭയങ്കര കാമുകൻ, ഉറക്കം എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഒൻപത് കഥകളടങ്ങിയ ഒരു കഥാസമാഹാരമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം.

ഓർമിക്കാൻ ചിലത്. മറക്കാൻ ചിലത്

ഉണ്ണി ആറിൻ്റെ ഭാഷ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്. കോട്ടയം 17 വായിച്ച് മറന്നു. ഈ കഥകളും ഒരു പ്രാവശ്യം കൂടി വായിക്കണം. പ്രയോഗങ്ങൾ ആണ് കഥകളെക്കാൾ എനിക്കിഷ്ടം. കഥകളിൽ അല്ല രസം. കഥ ആലോചിക്കുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ആണ്.

These whimsical and allegorical stories are a delight to read. The translator J. Devika seems to have done a wonderful job in capturing the flavour of rural Kerala. The stories are peopled with Marx, Jesus, crows, pigs, cats and other animals - including a randy elephant, philanders, murderers and, mostly, wastrel dipsomaniac sozzled men living off their wives.

Here are some gems:

"He was totally focused on driving and so my question lingered for some time at his ear-step, and then, disappointed, it rolled down the car’s window, fell out, and disappeared into the world."
"I opened my old suitcase. It opened reluctantly, hanging back briefly before stretching itself open. It clearly nursed a gripe about not being opened in a long time."
"The book ……… was moth-eaten but largely unharmed. The moths most probably lost some teeth trying to chew it and so left it alone."
"The cow mooed at us and Kuttiyappan mooed back. And the cow smiled."
"A leaf came falling down in a hurry to say something. The dog, which had been weighed down by deep thought all this time, now got up, shook its body, and took slow steps to the back of the house."

Clearly inspired from Haruki Murakami! I am giving it four stars since many stories appear to be inconclusive - the essence seems to have been lost in translation, may be....

I really wonder how this is going to be in big screens. This one might make controversies. If workout well this will be the most challenging role Dulquer is going to face, not sure he is mature enough as a actor to do such a role. Waiting for the movie..

This book was one of my🛫 airport bookstall purchase... Those random buy from piles 📚of discounted books on display....

1st - I selected the book coz it was on discount & cover was nice 😂

2nd - Short stories from Kerala n translated.📖

Well, I definitely liked the book as it is a collection of short stories and for its sincerity with varied underlying topics from sexuality, poverty, overated masochism, casteism to religion & beliefs. 

All the short stories are set in small towns/ villages and depicts Kerala 🌴🌊🌴.... 

Few picks-✔✔

📌 "One hell of a lover" - About a psychotic /drunk yet talented sculptor who was asked to make statue of a legendary beautiful lady by mere description of words from one of the aloof admirer.. Plot is twisted at the last moment! 

📌 "He who went alone" - Yesu (Jesus) an English God, widely followed by the converted Christians, one came of out church, start staying with a fugitive "Akkiri" Who let Yesu to cook, wash cloths etc while Akkiri himself went for fishing... It's the most funny as well as entertaining story... one time Yesu said - "I don't know how to swim... I can just walk 👣 on water"... Yesu sacrifice himself as the fugitive when police came to nabbed Akkiri. (Faith restored..✝ Amen) 

📌 "The Grievance" - Sales Girl is being molested in a bus while traveling to work place.. She saw the person briefly before she can raise an alarm. She & her friend hell bend to teach the person a proper lesson.... Though at last moment the person dies due to a road accident which she even help him to admit in hospital. 



📌"Caw"- When a person hates something to the limit, there is no recovery. This story is about a person who hates crow so much that since childhood he perfected the sling shot aims, secretly behave like a hunter and later on take the entire responsibility of framing plans how to eradicate crow from the face of earth! 🌎

📌 " Beyond the Canal, Beyond the yard" - Story about Granny-No-See (born blind) & her grand daughter Zulfat who venture around the town & imagine about traveling to Africa, London, etc by reading travel books... 

📌 "Leela"- About a rich egoistic & macho person who tag along his meek friend to fulfil his weird desire of making love to a woman leaning against an elephant tusker... Sad part of the story-the girl who had been sold off by her own father for the sole purpose of fulfilling the greed & fantasy of someone; is released from further humiliation & pain as the elephant killed her... 

📌 "Spectre"- Karl Marx appear out of a copper pot and being fed & play with Unni & Ambili (two little siblings who doesn't know who Karl is). Later they release Karl Marx as these two kids life is separated sadly after their mother sold off the home due to poverty and one of them is send off to relative's place... 


Definitely a good read... Its been first time for me to read Unni's writing though few of his writings & screenplays has been awarded...

ഭൂതം , ഡിവൈൻ കോമഡി , ഒറ്റപെട്ടവൻ , ജലം , സച്ചിദാനന്ദം , വൃത്തിയും വെളിച്ചവുമുള്ള ഒരിടം , സാത്താന്റെ വചനങ്ങൾ , ഒരു ഭയങ്കര കാമുകൻ , ഉറക്കം തുടങ്ങിയ ഒൻപത് ചെറുകഥകളാണ് ഉണ്ണി ആറിന്റെ ഒരു ഭയങ്കര കാമുകനിൽ ഉള്ളത്.



ഒരു ഭയങ്കര കാമുകൻ എന്ന പേര് പോലെ തന്നെ സംഭ്രമിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കാമുകത്വം വഹിക്കുന്ന രചനാരീതിയും കഥാപാത്ര സൃഷ്ടിയും തന്നെയാണ് ഈ കഥയെ എടുത്തു നിർത്തുന്നത്.



‘ഡിവിഷൻ കോമഡി’ പോലുള്ള ഒരു കഥ, തീർച്ചയായും ഡാന്റേയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മധ്യകാല ഇറ്റാലിയൻ ക്ലാസിക്കിനേയും വായനക്കാരനെ ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു, ഇത് മരണത്തിന്റെയും ഓർമ്മയുടെയും ഒരു അപഹാസ്യമാണ്.


സാത്താന്റെ വചനങ്ങൾ തികച്ചും മനസ്സിനെ നിശബ്ദമാക്കുന്ന കുറച്ചു ഏടുകളാണ്. വായിക്കാനും എഴുതാനും അറിയാത്ത കുഞ്ഞിക്കണ്ണിന്റെ ഊണും ഉറക്കവും പുസ്തകങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പമാകുമ്പോൾ അതിനെ അയാൾ ശ്വസിക്കുന്നു, അതിലയാൾ ജീവിക്കുന്നു എന്നത് വൈരുദ്ധ്യമാണ്.


"ഉറക്കം" എന്ന കഥയ്ക്കു പറയാനുള്ളത് എഴുപതുകളിൽ യുവാക്കളായിരുന്ന രണ്ടു വൃദ്ധരെ കുറിച്ചാണ്. വ്യത്യസ്തമായ മോഹങ്ങൾക്കൊടുവിൽ തങ്ങൾക്ക് ഒന്നിച്ചു കൊല്ലാൻ തോന്നുന്ന ഒരാളെ കൊല്ലാമെന്ന കരാറിന്മേൽ അവർ വാങ്ങുന്ന തോക്കുകളുടെയും കഥയാണ് ഉറക്കം.


ഒരു പരമ്പരാഗത കഥയുടെ പതിവ് ക്ലൈമാക്സുകൾ തടഞ്ഞുവയ്ക്കുമ്പോഴും വായനക്കാരുടെ ജിജ്ഞാസ ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കഥകളുടെ ആകർഷകമായ ശേഖരമാണിത്.
ഓരോ കഥയും വായിക്കുന്നവരെ പല രീതിയിൽ ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഒരു ഭയങ്കര കാമുകൻ , ഉറക്കം എന്നീ കഥകൾ ഏറെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ മറ്റു കഥകളൊന്നും തന്നെ അത്രെയേറെ മനസ്സിൽ തങ്ങിയില്ല. ഇതിന് മുൻപ് വായിച്ച ഉണ്ണി ആറിന്റെ പുസ്തകമായ പെണ്ണും ചെറുക്കന്റെയും അത്ര എത്തിയില്ല എന്ന് തോന്നി.

This is the author of Charlie, which is why I read the book. But like Charlie, most of the stories have obvious plot holes, even though they're all engaging and entertaining. He doesn't seem bothered at all about whether or not the reader understands the story, he is clearly too busy enjoying his stories to worry about that. I really liked Calling to Prayer because that's the only story I could relate to and fully understand. I would have loved and recommended it had the author not turned and twisted these otherwise lovely stories so much. Surely his intentions are noble with every story, but I couldn't digest the absurdity and abstraction so much.

I am not a fan of short stories because I wanted to read long novels for days that make me happy by living in the world of characters. I bought this book on the basis of good reviews seen across amazon and Goodreads. Let me give you my honest review: I liked some of the stories in this book, the one which I really enjoyed is the " Oru bhayangara Kamukan", the story gives me the same feeling of reading a PF Mathew novel, who is one of my favorite authors. Overall I found 4 stories very much interested and I couldn't digest the other stories, because I had a hard time understanding the authors concept.

ഉണ്ണി ആർ എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ 9 ചെറുകഥകളുടെ സമാഹാരമാണിത്. ഭൂതം, ഡിവൈൻ കോമഡി, ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടവൻ, ജലം, സച്ചിദാനന്ദം, വൃത്തിയും വെളിച്ചമുള്ള ഒരിടം, സാത്താന്റെ വചനങ്ങൾ, ഒരു ഭയങ്കര കാമുകൻ, ഉറക്കം എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ 9 ചെറുകഥകൾ. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം എസ് ഹരീഷും ഉണ്ണി ആറും തമ്മിൽ നടത്തിയ ഒരു സംഭാഷണ ശകലവും കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. കുറച്ച് ഗഹനമായി ചിന്തിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ള വായനക്കാർക്ക് മാത്രമേ ഈ കഥകളുടെ ആത്മാവ് തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ കഴിയൂ. സാധാരണ വായനയിൽ കാണുന്നത് ഒന്നുമല്ല ഇതിൽ ഉള്ളത്. നമ്മളിലെ വായനക്കാർ ഇനിയും ഉയരേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഒരു ആധുനിക രചന.

One Hell of a Lover is One Hell of a Book! It isn't meant for everyone as some might find it perverse, disgusting and even offensive, and Unni R. manages to capture these notions quite well through the stories. Each story takes about 5 to15 minutes but some of the characters stay on for a long time. Although this is a translated work, it has remained true to the theme of presenting the 'naatukkaar' aptly.

A diverse and unusual collection.

With dark stories and open endings, Unni R.'s One Hell of a Lover is an unusual collection of short stories dealing with the Malyali macho masculinity. While many of the stories left me utterly disturbed by the bizarre behaviour of their characters, there were some which were warm and touched my heart. All in all, an interesting read.

This is the first time I read something from Malayalam literature. It was refreshing to these read stories as these are full of new metaphors (at least for me). There's so much of nature, individual spirituality, ethical questions, grounded and not-so-grounded characters. And above all, these stories left me empathizing and at times feeling helpless for the characters who did not receive happy endings.

ജീവിതത്തിലെ വലിയൊരു പരീക്ഷക്ക് പഠിക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ 2000 പേജുള്ള മെഡിക്കൽ ബുക്കിൻറെ ഇടയിൽ ഒളിപ്പിച്ചു വച്ചാണ് വായിച്ചത്, ഭാര്യയുടെ വഴക്ക് പേടിച്ച്! കറുപ്പിനടിപ്പെട്ടവൻ ഒളിച്ചിരുന്ന് കറുപ്പ് തിന്നുന്നപോലെ.. അത്രകണ്ട് അകപ്പെടുത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു

ഒന്നൊന്നര.. 'ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടവ'നും 'ഭൂത'വുമൊക്കെ വായിക്കാതിരുന്നാൽ നഷ്ടമായിപ്പോയേനേ..
