Rate this book
Is your household busting at the seams with stuff everywhere? Has confusion and chaos at home and office become the norm? Are you facing anxiety and overwhelm with all the projects on your plate? Do your relationships suffer from all the demands you put on yourself and other people?

That's all clutter--in mind, body, heart and home.

No matter what you do to clear the clutter from your life, does it always seem to creep back in?

If you're nodding your head yes to any of these questions, this book is for you.

How do we begin to clean up our clutter? How do we regain clarity and peace? We lost it to overwhelming to-do lists, countless home- and work-life obligations, social media and cell phones. We lost it to keeping up with the Joneses.

So many books obsess over cleaning out drawers and closets to create an organized household, but that's only scratching the surface of clutter. Those books miss the mark! There's something else we have to clean first before we can declutter effectively. The mind.

Known to some as the bible for decluttering your life from the inside out, The Declutter Code is a 10-step journey that will transform how you deal with clutter. Using the same process that worked for herself and her clients, Yvette Bowlin walks you through clearing mental clutter like self-sabotage, stress, lies and limiting beliefs. Learn the secret behind your "clutter problem" so you can begin to deeply clear it away! Regain clarity and, quite possibly, your sanity.

Yvette Bowlin has always been a student of the mind. It started with her undergraduate and Master's work in Consumer Psychology and led to her studies of enlightenment and spirituality. Years of research and self-inquiry sent her down the path of discovering the root of our “clutter problem.” Her work has been featured on Huffington Post, Los Angeles Business Journal, several podcast interviews and more.

From observing herself and others, Bowlin has pinpointed the reasons most people keep themselves stuck in sabotage, suffering, struggle, separation and stress. But we don’t have to stay stuck! Clutter stands in the way of peace, presence and clarity.

Bowlin learned the 'art of hoarding' early on in childhood, and has since been meticulous about decluttering her life. She’s created a simple process for doing just that, outlined in The Declutter Code: 10 Simple Steps to Clarity. The underlying premise of her book, seminars and speeches is that the most effective way to declutter is from the inside out—starting with the mind!

Also a certified yoga instructor, Bowlin loves to help others come into mind-body awareness to better facilitate deep decluttering. You can learn more about her at declutterist.com.

The Declutter Code blew my mind. I hadn't really given much thought to clearing and cleaning my mind out, either from the inside out or vice versa. To be honest, I was pretty good with where I was and didn't really want to leave that world. After all, it was comfy and I had spent so much time and energy making it mine.

After reading a lot of self-help books and doing research on some new books coming out, a friend talked to me about this book and suggested I read it. Again, I wasn't really sure it was for me, but I liked the cover and the title so I gave it a shot.

I AM SO GRATEFUL I DID.

The author, Yvette Bowlin, has a way of making you feel like you are okay where you are but still give that "self-help" suggestion and nudge. I loved that. She doesn't get pushy at all either. That is really appreciated because I am already apprehensive about being told something may or may not be wrong with me, the last thing I want is someone then confirming it and making me feel like crap.

We get comfortable with our clutter or junk. We even learn how to shift it here and there, allowing us to feel like we are getting somewhere and not sinking. Truthfully, you are just like me... I kept moving it, but never really got anywhere because most of my time was spent working around it- instead of just getting rid of it from the start.

Just a few days into using The Declutter Code I felt a peace about myself, my day, my environment. My interactions were improved, my attitude was better and I was much more organized. I started and finished the book in the same day. Yes, I loved it that much but now the real work begins. The author lays out a weekly plan with The Declutter Code guiding you along the way. I am really excited about joining her email and community groups too.

I highly suggest this book for anyone, not just those that actually recognize they need it.

The cover of The Declutter Code really grabbed my attention. What a pleasant surprise too!

I found myself taking many pages of notes as I read this book and could hardly stop myself once I started too, but you have to stop and reflect as you go.

At this point, I am a few weeks into the program the author set-up and immediately saw results from the practices. She really put a lot of effort into building a plan for the reader... don't ignore that!

I gave the book 5 stars because it flows really well, has great info and gives the reader a plan to follow. You can also sign up for the courses that follow on. I am sure I will at least get on the email list for updates.

Guess you can judge a book by its cover after all! Happy reading!

People inevitably and constantly experience different types of clutter in life. Thus, there is nothing more rewarding than feeding yourself with helpful ideas and understanding on how to deal or manage the disorder or the chaos of things AROUND and IN us (thanks to this book!). That is why this book can tremendously benefit us by effectively regulating or even eradicating internal and external clutter that we have been struggling to get rid of. This is definitely a book I would recommend to someone who seeks improvement and clarity in his or her life. I absolutely enjoyed leafing through this book.

What an AMAZING book! The Declutter Code is fun to read, educational but not stuffy, and gives the reader a great path to clarity.

Why I read The Declutter Code: I am a borderline hoarder. That is hard to admit too, but you don't know me so it makes it easier. I started reading some other books but found them to be too rigid and focused on cleaning spaces, not working on a source for why the clutter appeared/stacked up.

How I found it: I have been doing some research into options for tidying up, decluttering, etc. I found this book, ironically enough, via a Twitter feed I follow. Social media actually served a purpose for once.

What I liked most: Yvette Bowlin is a talented, young, up-and-coming author. It shows in her clean writing, amazing spirit and excitement to help people. A lot of people who write "self help" books write them as if they are 10 books deep, lacking enthusiasm for the process. How is that supposed to excite or motivate me? Additionally, I want to feel like my author is having a conversation with me, not a lecture. Yvette nails that angle!

Now what?: I have started the exercises Yvette lays out for us. They are really simple and attainable, but still a challenge at the same time. Liken this to a marathon and not a sprint. Go into it with an open mind, even if you are all over the place up there... then begin seeking a clear perspective- aka: CLARITY via her steps and guidance.

I received this book through Goodreads Giveaways.

I found reading The Declutter Code to be an eye-opening experience. I had never really thought about the impact a cluttered mind can have on homes, relationships, projects, and so on. I have definitely experienced a cluttered mind, and I found that a lot of what I read in this book rings true in my life. Not only does Yvette make a well laid-out argument that environmental (outside the mind) clutter is a reflection of mental clutter, but she also presents clear and organized steps (dubbed the Declutter Code) that you can follow to bring enlightenment and clarity to your life. After reading this book, I have started to incorporate elements of the Declutter Code into my life, and I can already feel subtle but positive changes occurring in my thoughts and mood. After reading this book, I am now confident that I will be able to handle stress, anxiety, and a hectic schedule more easily. This book is a great guide for anyone looking to better a negative, messy life.

(request submitted by author for an honest critique)

I agree with Yvette that we, as a whole, live a cluttered life. We also have difficulties simplifying our lives. This leads to stress, which leads to unhappiness.

Yvette didn't necessarily teach me anything new about what causes the "clutter" and how to "declutter" myself. (Sorry Yvette but I have been reading philosophy books since I was 19.

BTW: Love the Lao Tzu quote. He is one of my favorite philosophers.)

With that said, I do think she WILL TEACH many others how to quiet the chatter and live a more peaceful, less chaotic life.

Her experiments might come across as challenging for some such as giving up tv, internet, everything, but it can be done.

Also, take her advice and try yoga or mediate. Folks, they really do calm the storm swirling around in our minds.

The book is very enlightening especially for me who has always struggled with a cluttered mind.
The steps were quite simple enough to follow but the process needs a lot of dedication to pursue in order to declutter your mind and therefore live an uncluttered and happy and meaningful life.
Thank you for this book. It really helps.
