"How he got started in comics: In 1983, when Fraction was 7 years old and growing up in Kansas City, Mo., he became fascinated by the U.S. invasion of Grenada and created his own newspaper to explain the event. "I've always been story-driven, telling stories with pictures and words," he said.

Education and first job: Fraction never graduated from college. He stopped half a semester short of an art degree at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri in 1998 to take a job as a Web designer and managing editor of a magazine about Internet culture.

"My mother was not happy about that," he said.

But that gig led Fraction and his co-workers to split off and launch MK12, a boutique graphic design and production firm in Kansas City that created the opening credits for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."

Big break: While writing and directing live-action shoots at MK12, Fraction spent his spare time writing comics and pitching his books each year to publishers at Comic-Con. Two books sold: "The Last of the Independents," published in 2003 by AiT/Planet Lar, and "Casanova," published in 2006 by Image Comics.

Fraction traveled extensively on commercial shoots. Then his wife got pregnant. So Fraction did what any rational man in his position would do -- he quit his job at MK12 to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time comic book writer.

Say what? "It was terrifying," said Fraction, who now lives in Portland, Ore. "I was married. We had a house. We had a baby coming. And I just quit my job."

Marvel hired Fraction in June 2006, thanks largely to the success of his other two comics. "I got very lucky," he half-joked. "If it hadn't worked out, I would have had to move back in with my parents.

An interesting tale. I don't like how they changed Odin or the relationship between the father and son. I much preferred the Stan Lee days. I was also surprised that a storyline created to emphasize superhero battles gives so little space to those battles. But the art was good.

Like any stories, Marvel’s multi-title summer blockbuster events function best when they’re trying to be about something. Civil War worked because it debated the morality of a post-9/11 world; how we deal with and contain power when the world’s getting more paranoid. Fear Itself is a logical extension of that chain of thought. The Red Skull’s daughter retrieves a mysterious hammer and sets a mysterious character known as the Serpent free, resulting in the sort of apocalyptically global threat that you need for these events. The key here appears to be fear and despair, of unfettered strength pulverising all in its path. After 9/11 and the financial crash of 2008 impersonal brute forces are still society’s great paranoia so this seems a genuinely fascinating approach to take.

This first volume collects the prologue, the first three episodes of the main mini-series and the one shot The Worthy. The issues of the main series are exemplary in dealing with a major comics event, gradually ramping up the tension, providing strong storytelling and twists and once events have been brought to the boil maintaining incredible narrative tension. But then Brubaker and Fraction are two of the finest writers working on superhero comics, so perhaps it’s what we should expect. The Worthy material at the back comprises a series of shorts regarding characters transformed by events; as with any short story collection these can be variable but a there has to be a special mention for the Thing story with a splendid use of a retro style of art to depict the origins of the Fantastic Four. A fine first half of this story.

I've only ever really read Matt Fractions Hawkeye run which was excellent, but here you can see why he was one of Marvels architects. Helping publicize the two hit films due out that year...Captain America and Thor, this story also builds on past story arcs for both and melding them perfectly together. It an intriguing concept which really bears fruit when the Serpents harbingers of doom aren't necessarily characters you'd assume to take on this roles. The epilogue story is fun and helps set the scene and tone for the story unfolding, and the mini one shots vary in quality but are still fun. Bring on Volume Two!!!
