With the upcoming release of Resident Evil Requiem I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic for the classic games, and thankfully Code: Revenant was here to satiate that nostalgia.
This book reads like a classic survival horror game, complete with hidden doors, secret labs, interesting lore files, and unique monsters. It’s also packed with references to resident evil and other horror titles.
It’s a story about a group of rangers who are trying to answer a distress call and are pulled suddenly into a world of survival horror. If that doesn’t immediately make you want to read this then I don’t know what to tell you.
Obviously I loved it, the setting was familiar enough to be nostalgic but unique enough to not feel overdone, the story was fun and engaging, the monsters were creepy and grotesque, the characters, as always, were the star of the show.
If you have any interest in survival horror games, or just fun action filled horror, this is a must read, I can’t recommend it enough.

WHAT A RIDE
This was wild from start to finish and was such a fun time. Mutant monsters wreaking havoc on an isolated clinic for the ultra-rich? A team of forest rangers dropping in to investigate? I'm SO there (in spirit, not physically because I know I wouldn't have made it 10 minutes out there)
The structure of this story I think was one of its strongest elements - this is told in 3rd person POV, but each chapter is clearly labeled by who we will be following for those pages. Our characters are spread out, handling their own battles before coming together for an explosive ending, but the way we switch between characters feels so seamless and natural. In true Christopher Robertson fashion, this feels like you could be watching it as a movie the way scenes just blend into the next.
AND we also get some timeline manipulation, as we see the present timeline of the rangers going in to discover what is happening, but we also go back to the hours when it all begins so we can get an idea of how the carnage originated. It's honestly a brilliant setup.
This also is largely inspired by Resident Evil, which I think becomes very evident very quickly, as well as other isolated/survival/bioweapon games and stories.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 to Code: Revenant by Christopher Robertson.
I've read books with pace that I would describe as 'break-neck' but this takes the cake. Code: Revenant is the fastest book I've ever read to drop its readers into the action and not let go throughout its entire length. Revenant follows five forest rangers searching of missing hikers only to find themselves stranded in the same woods, besieged by a volley of monsters that all seem connected to a spa retreat for the super elite. It's intense, gory and action packed.
It is also massively inspired by the first Resident Evil game. Characters get to solve puzzles to uncover mysteries or escapes, the book is filled with extracts from diary entry's and even one of the characters drops the famous 'bingo' line. Yet, in this brilliant love letter to that game I also found echoes of Alan Wake and The Lost Boy's.
If you've followed my reviews for a while you'll know that Robertson is one of my favourite writers. Anything he produces I eat up and Code: Revenant is no different. If you are a fan of his work I'd say that this book is closer to his books Sewer Sharks and Euffed Up Bugs than The Cotton Candy Massacre. It's also one of his lightest reads, in terms of emotion. Robertson's books, beneath all the horror and humour, providing some heavy lifting with emotional stakes, especially the last cotton candy book. This is a breath of a fresh air. It's fun, breezy and can easily be finished in a single sitting leaving the reader with a big smile of their face.

If you loved games like Resident Evil back in the days then this book is a must read for you! An alarming emergency call puts a team of forest rangers on high alert. The Blackthorn clinic, a wellness resort for the ultra-wealthy, gets overrun by terrifying creatures after something went horribly wrong. The forest rangers are heading to the clinic to investigate this case and what they encounter there goes way beyond their imagination.
When I started this book I was in a reading slump, but right from the start it was super engaging, grew fast on me and pulled me immediately out of it. It’s packed with action, gore, scary AF creatures and great characters. Throughout the book the forest rangers made me chuckle with their amusing dialogues and comments despite the dangers they were facing. Rustin, Song and Castello were my absolute favorites!

If like me you were raised on a diet of 'Resident Evil' video games, 80's action movies and 00's horror flicks then this will be right up your street. Speaking of which there's a couple of easter eggs in here that absolutely hit me in the feels. This is balls to the wall action, gore galore and a deluge of devilish double crossings. I also loved the setting of a luxury resort located in the wilderness and the only drawback was that we didn't get to see more of it pre-incident, maybe followimg a couple of people who are staying there to really get a feel for it.

If you enjoy Resident Evil, you will absolutely love this. And I do, so I did. This incredibly entertaining book has all the blood, guts, monsters and action of RE plus characters you will love or love to hate. Once the action starts, this book does not let up! It will keep you interested from start to finish!

Christopher Robertson never disappoints. His books are always such a fun time. This is a RE game just in book format. It even had puzzles and the keys built in! Loved it.

Do you love resident evil and old school survivabil horror games? Then this book it for you. Christopher Robertson never disappoints with his amazing story telling and graphic scenes. This really got me nostalgic for resident evil.
