The New Jim Crow Study Guide and Call to Action

Rate this book
Drawing from and expanding on the themes of Michelle Alexander's acclaimed best-seller, The New Jim Crow, this in-depth guide provides a launching pad for groups wishing to engage in deep, meaningful dialogue about race, racism, and structural inequality in the age of mass incarceration. The Study Guide and Call to Action spans the entirety of The New Jim Crow, engaging the critical questions of how we managed to create, nearly overnight, a penal system unprecedented in world history, and how that system actually functions -- as opposed to the way it is advertised. This important new resource also challenges us to search for and admit the truth about ourselves, our own biases, stereotypes, and misconceptions, and the many ways in which we might actually be part of the problem.

Boning up on ideas for my new PD class. was hoping for more thought-provoking questions to help me plan. nevertheless, good overview, some additional quotes I'll use. More of a pamphlet than a book but I'll count it in my yearly total, ha ha.

A book about mass incarceration. This is meant to spark conversations. I mainly read this for a women’s studies class I needed to take.

This well-researched book was written with clarity, thoroughness, and candidness. The author covers the topic, mass incarceration of black males, in a poignant and brutally truthful manner. The book is a must-read for anyone concerned with the direction and plight of not only the African-American male but all Americans. The book dignifies the fact that we are made up of one human community. Any form of oppression eventually effects everyone.
