“There was a large, coal-black front door with an ornate sign hanging above: ‘Diamond Books’ it proclaimed, and underneath: ‘Treasures and Pleasures Within’.”
Dominic Diamond is drowning in the dark side of his nature. Caught in a downward spiral of destruction, his only hope of redemption lies with the hidden away bookshop he bought to spite his Mafia-esque Father.
With the bookshop sinking fast, and his own X-rated novels--penned drunkenly during his darkest hours still unpublished--time is rapidly running out for Dominic. His sinister addictions are steadily laying waste to his efforts to break free from the ugly world he’s become a part of. All that awaits him now is his inheritance: a fortune in dirty money, and a lifetime at the helm of the Family Business that generated it…
…until the day a shy, broken soul stumbles into the bookshop clutching her resume, and in her innocence, inadvertently turns his entire world upside down.

★Review★
I have to admit, the first 10% or so, I thought this might be a skim read.
Mainly as I am not a huge fan of having POV written from anything other than the 2 main characters, or the "hero" having sex scenes with other women.
However, I soon got into it, and the one chapter from the POV of a secondary character coupled with the actions of Dom, were used to help the reader really get a feel for Dom, and how complicated and messed up he really is.
Given the very short time scale in this book it takes place over a week it helped the reader get to paint a picture of Dom, before Mel ever truly got to know him. And given some of what happens in the book, that is needed.
Dom is deeply flawed, screwed up and has a terrible opinion of himself. He is sinking down, until Mel walks into his book shop looking for a job.
Mel, is unsure of herself, shy, broken, yet the two of them form a connection that they cannot deny.
It is a very raw and real, at times almost sad story.
Have to admit, something happened around the 62% mark, that I could not see them coming back from, but, it was handled brilliantly, and the author was not afraid to make her Hero grovel
It had certain unique vibe to it. Something I have not come across before. A quirky eccentric style to it. I am probably not explaining myself very well here, and hence this is why I will never be a writer I suppose.
It is an interesting, different, emotional read and you fall in love with both Dom and Mel and really wanted it to work out for them.
Now, I am not usually a fan of the trilogies, or a series about just one couple, I like my HEA from one book and for it not to be messed with. But I cannot wait for the rest of Mel and Dom's story. (although please please do not split them up in the next book! I am a wimp and cannot handle it, and if it happens I shall be crying big ugly tears into my tea and kit kat!)
Also, for some reason, this book has made me want to go and re watch Black Books!
This book took me by surprise. I love when that happens. So many reviews have outlined this storyline so no need in repeating it.
Dom and Mel's story was very engaging. They both were carrying some serious baggage and I really enjoyed the way everything unfolded. Dom had some serious issues to deal with and there were a few moments where I wanted to seriously kick him in the junk but I think he more than redeemed himself. I really liked Mel. Her inner monologues were very funny and at times sad. She had her own issues to work through and I thought she found her voice when it really mattered.
I look forward to reading more from this gifted author.
When I started this book I thought Dom was going to turn out to be a vampire, don't ask me why (too many PNR books on the brain). Once I realized my mistake and adjusted my expectations, I really started to enjoy the characters and the writing style. Even though Dom is a self-proclaimed sex addict and all around "bad guy" you really find yourself rooting for him to change his life and make something of himself. Enter Mel, the innocent "good girl" who doesn't fit into his world, yet who he can't seem to let go of. Theirs is an interesting relationship that forces them both to reevaluate how they see themselves. I enjoyed the sexuality that Dom brought to the book as a contrast to Mel's own innocence. I would highly recommend this book to those interested in the romance genre.
Being an inexperienced women with self confidence issues makes it easy to fall into a bad relationship. Which is what happened to Mel. Her college professor took advantage of her, and after two years, she left him.
She finds work again, back in her hometown, at a local bookstore. Dominic Diamond's bookstore.
Dominic is a spoiled, lazy, playboy. He's trying to get away from the filth of the family's dirty jewelry business, but obviously doesn't really know what he's doing. Dom opened a bookstore, wanting to live with something he loves--books. Dominic, and everyone else, warn Mel that he's not relationship material, not monogamy material, just a good time. He'll never be able to be satisfied with just one woman.
But, while Mel is inexperienced and afraid no one will ever really love or inspire passion in her; Dominic is a serial womanizing sex-addict that believes he'll never want one girl for more than a quick and dirty good time. When the timid, shy girl that has no idea about men makes the man that prefers to have several, easy girls a night realize he only wants her--sparks fly.
It's nearly inevitable for a girl to have body issues and no self-confidence these days. A lot of books try to make their heroine be relatable to us, but usually we end up with a whiny, weak, and pathetic girl that begs to be smacked. That's just not how I felt about Mel, though. While she carries several character flaws, she doesn't come off as stupid and weak. A bit naïve, but not an idiot or a doormat.
Inheritance is gritty and dark, like how I imagine all British romances should be! Very different to the usual American style, makes a nice change. Nothing fake or fancy, and lots of raw emotion. Lot of work gone into this one, you can tell by how much the sex and the events change people. Nothing is in for show, everything is there for a reason. It all twists together perfectly. Not what I expected from either small press, or a debut. Just shows you.
Brilliant! So nice to see a British erotic romance! This one is honest and 'real' and I did not want it to end. Dom is a great character - so complicated - and he's really well written because you can see exactly why he does what he does, and why he wants to stop doing what he's doing. Every action here has consequences, and the sex only adds to that which is ace because everything *means* something. Mel is hurt and insecure, but she comes back around and starts to fight back, and I can't wait to see how strong she is in the next one. And how Dom turns out too. Both their worlds are turned around really. A fab read. Nothing fake or pretty or phony about it. Real people with real emotions, messed up, and vulnerable. Dark, damaged, and real. Genuine, I think, is the words I'm looking for. Looking forward to the next one.
This isn’t my usual genre, but I was drawn in by the cover! And I’m glad I was because, my goodness, what a dark and exciting tale. On one level, it’s a heartwarming love story, and on the other, it’s a glimpse of a dark and dangerous world. I enjoyed how the two are intermixed, it’s what made it such an interesting read. Poor Dominic, he’s a complicated character and the fact that there’s no black & white here, especially given what happens with Mel, makes it a thought-provoking read which isn’t always what you expect from romance, but Dubois proves it can be done! The plot was surprisingly well-rounded, and I thought the ending was brilliantly worked. I do hope the sequel isn’t too far off.
Here I was, just the other day, ranting about how I was tired of a) virginal (or near-virginal) hoerines-turned-sex-kittens b) manwhore millionaires who are cured by (a) c) the bj-as-female-empowerment trope d) insta-love
So imagine my surprise when I realized I was reading a book about all four... and loving it. Somehow, Zoey DuBois made these tropes fun again! She reminded me why I used to devour every book in reach with even a hint of a billionaire bad boy in the book blurb. So, thank you Zoey, for reminding me that the whole new adult genre doesn't suck after all.
Inheritance was a quick read, just angsty enough to keep my interest piqued and the pages turning, but not so full of it I felt like I was reading a cheap telenovela. It was also full of surprisingly well-crafted secondary characters, on top of Dom, the most realistically portrayed manwhore ever, the only one I've come across who knows very clearly that he is a sex addict. Mel, I could take her or leave her, but that's undoubtedly from blatant female cattiness on my part. After all, how could ANYONE be good enough for Dom? ;)
Also, as an American BBC addict, I loved every 'bloody', 'shag', and 'arse', as well as learning 'sarnie', 'agony aunt', and 'building society'. Enjoy this book with a cuppa for a brilliant afternoon.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
A well written story with down to Earth characters, 'Inheritance' is a book you can definitely get into. The plot was enjoyable and easy to read and the characters were well developed. It's a refreshing change of pace from the run of the mill, "I'm going to woo you with my insane amount of wealth and dominate your world" kind of book. Mel and Dom have some depth and real world problems that make them much easier to identify with. I felt the last chapter or so was a bit rushed, bringing my overall rating down just a notch, but I will certainly be looking for Zoey DuBois' 'Indebted', to hit the shelves!
Couldn't put this down. It's something fresh from the usual within the genre, as in it's dark but genuinely dark, not like, 'Ooooh sexy dark' for effect. It's real. I thought it was quite brave to be honest. Loved it. It deals with real issues, and real emotions. An honest book I think. Exciting, and sexy. Hope the second one is on its way.
Beautiful! I can't wait for the next one. Dom & Mel are amazing. I really like Andy too, I hope there's more about him some time. Would love to see a Tris spin-off as well!
First off I loved this book, absolutely totally LOVED it.
Loved it!!
But no doubt it would be more helpful if I explained why, so okay, let me count the ways.
First off, it’s just soooo perfectly British. Being a huge anglophile all the little British-isms made me want to squeal like a little fan girl. It was like taking a mind vacay to England and that was just lovely.
There is a little known (in America, anyway) British show that was on awhile back called Black Books, starring one of my absolutely favorite comedians, (and he’s a damn fine man, as well) Irish cutie Dylan Moran. The bookstore setting and all reminds me very much of that show, which made me all blissful and happy.
Now to the actual plot and characters and such;
Mel is a very sad, rather pathetic figure in the beginning, a little frustrating, but very REAL, if you get me. She is also described minimally, but it is reiterated more than once that she is quite plain and could stand to lose a few pounds. Just off a nasty breakup with the only man she had ever slept with and staying with her only real friend and his boyfriend, we start with Mel desperately passing out resumes to get a job and try to get back on her feet. She doesn’t get very far before her bestie’s awesome partner takes pity on her and personally takes her to Diamond Books.
She gets her job after meeting Dominic Diamond. Dom is totally sexy and sweet and Mel is blown away by him, but she has NO clue what he is really like.
Dom is as pathetic and messed up in his way as Mel is in hers. He's a man slut, addicted to sex and using women left and right like a little whore. This sounds effed up and it is, but the writer does a superb job of making you fall in love with both Mel and Dom and all their brokenness. One of my fave quotes from this book is:
'Maybe every single person on the planet is completely messed up in their own special way.'
What a beautiful mess this book is! I didn't want it to end!

5 perfect stars..
Note- Contains sexual situations, coarse/explicit language, a cliffhanger
Genre- Romance/ Contemporary
A dark and engaging read. Although the start was too light for me, the book did live up to my expectations. The plot was well developed and even though the book ends in a pretty steep cliffhanger, it ends in a way, that you just know, everything will be perfect in the end. The writing style is beautiful and the pace of the book, while not too fast , wasn't slow and sleepy either. While I was highly doubtful of Dom remaining faithful to Mel, let's just say, I am really impressed. I was honestly intrigued by Dom's thought process and really wished that the book had been in his POV. Would have been interesting getting into his head. The characters were life-like, and without a doubt, with real issues. While Mel was a character you can relate to, I felt, the characterization of Dom was immaculate. A self proclaimed sex addict? Yes, please. But even then, Dom was more. He was vulnerable. And he wasn't afraid to show it. An Alpha Male with a dash of color. While this is just the first book, judging by it, the series holds a lot of promise. A big thumbs-up for Zoey....
Overall- Fast, emotional and engaging..
Recommended For - All readers who love emotional clenching and dark, dark Alpha Males....

I hate writing bad reviews, especially when it took me so long to actually read the book (sorry about that), but I'm asked to write an honest review so here it is...
I'll start with everything I actually liked, because Inheritance is not a bad book. It's actually pretty good, but I just didn't enjoy it because of some things I personally don't like. So I'm not saying you shouldn't read this book, neither am I saying you should read it. I'm saying I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. If you can't decide, I'd say give it a shot. You never know!
Okay, so, what did I like about this one? - The writing. I actually liked the writing a lot.
- Tris. He's cool. I'd much rather go for him than for Dom. Even though I like my heroes scarred, I liked Tris better. I guess I only like intelligent, scarred heroes...
- The story. I liked the story overall. If I ignore all the negative stuff and the irritation caused by it, I liked the story. So again, give this book shot if you're hesitating!
Now, what I didn't like about this book: - The fast pacing. WHOLY SH*T! The whole book was more or less about 4 days is their lives! Take it easy! I think it was all too much for me. I like a bit of reality in the books I read and the fast pacing made some things that happened hard to believe for me... What I also don't like is instalove and well, because of the fast pacing, it kind of became instalove for me, which made it even harder to continue reading.
- Mel. At the beginning of the book we meet Mel, the girl who has been cheated on and whines the entire time about it. I have a strong dislike of such heroines so I was talking myself through it, thinking it was normal for her to whine about it because she just got "dumped" (sort of). Then at the end of her first day she's this whole new woman, who doesn't whine about her problems anymore and actually stands up for herself. I mean, I liked the second version, the new Mel, a lot better of course, but you can't change your character like that. It's impossible. Anyways, the harm had been done, I didn't like Mel.
- Dom. Dom, the sex addict. Yeah, it was hard for me to believe too. And then when he gets mad at Mel at the restaurant because she says she thinks it's only a deal for him and then gets back at her by pretty much raping her, that was it for me.
- The end. SO. MUCH. UNNECESSARY. DRAMA! If Dom had gone to Paul's after Nate told him, all would've been solved without the drama. But then it would've been predictable...
Like I said, the reason why I didn't like it is not because of the author (who wrote a good book) but it's just that maybe this book just wasn't meant for me.
Thanks again to the author to give me a free copy and for the patience.
Finished reading this book and am really looking forward to the next in the series. I've never really read a main character like Dom. I kept wanting to put him in an alpha role but he really isn't an alpha except in specific situations. . But mostly he is charming, funny, warm even. He was written with emotion which is really refreshing from the staunch and stoic characters that many H's portray. Mel...well I really liked Mel too! She isn't written to be some super model who doesn't see herself for her own beauty; no, she is written to be more like the normal girl next door and rather different than most Female leads....and I loved these traits in these two characters! It really made the book for me! You have two really messed up people feeling inadequate but getting just what they didn't know they needed from each other - but are so wildly different! Truly. Different. He's wealth, she's not. She's naive, he's sooo not. He's a shitty business man, she's got it going on in that department. Their differences seem like they would be barriers but no, they aren't, it's what makes them work. Both characters have traits that they bring to the table. The get to know you build up was quick, and almost an insta love thing which, eh, I wasn't wild about but given the timeframe of the events, were warranted. So bring on the sequel...I'm ready to see what kind of trouble is headed their way!
I was given this book by the author for a honest review.
Fantastic and well written. Inheritance is an erotic romance with just the right amount of darkness. And that darkness comes in the form of Dominic Diamond! (This guy is smoking!)
Dominic is a womanising billionaire and heir to his father's fortune. Dom can have any women he chooses and uses his smoking hot looks and his enormous you know what, to get into the panties of as many women as he can. But this isn't who Dominic wants to be and only the light that is Mel can help try to save him from himself and allow himself to be the person he wants.
Mel is an inexperienced, mouse like women who's confidence is at rock bottom. Dominic becomes her new boss and together they have a spark that even Dominic cannot ignore. Dominic and Mel together give each other the confidence to be who they want to be but will Dominic's sex addiction spoil everything both he and Mel are working hard for?
Zoey DuBois had done a fantastic job with this book. The characters are believable making it all so real. A very exciting read with a bit of a nail biting ending. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read such a brilliant book and I can't wait to read more.
Bloody Brilliant - you know why? Honest, down-to-earth, human. Probaly not one you will like if you like your heroes all perfect and your women all beautiful and all that sort of pretend stuff that often goes with romance. Not that there's anything wrong with that if that's your thing, but this one is something really different. I saw 'quirky' in another review and that's just about right - I would say quirky and honest. Real. And very, very British. Nice to see something a bit different being done within the genre. I hope people appreciate this one for what it is. No plastics! That's what I was trying to think of. A plastic-free erotic romance.
British through and through this one - dark and quirky and honest. Brilliant. And set in Swindon! About time someone put Swindon on the map! Can't imagine this going down too well with American readers - it lacks all the sickly sweet nonsense that tends to bloat the genre. Not sure it will translate across the pond, but for here, bloody amazing. Real characters with real emotions and problems. And not a vampire or shifter in sight. Honesty in romance - and it works.
This was truly an unexpected and unique read. I loved the relationship, the dialogue between Mel and Dom. I suspected initially that this would be a makeover story, but am really pleased that it focused much more on the inner beauty. I realize that this will be a series centered around Mel and Dom, but I feel the first installment ended a little abruptly. Regardless, great premise and I'm looking forward to the next book! This was 3.5 stars for me but I rounded up, just because :).
I wanted to like this book and it looks like I'm in the minority here but this is just not the book for me. After 26 % I realised I just wasn't connecting with the characters.
DNF. The heroine comes across as an idiot with no self esteem. Not feeling up to wanting to stab myself in the face right now. That's what I get for skipping the sample for a 99c book.
