I an the author/illustrator of the middle grade series starring Mr. Puffball. My first picture book, Everybody Says Meow, has cats AND a dog, a duck, and more (and I drew them!) My other two picture books are Tiny Spoon vs Little Fork (illustrated by Dan and Jason,) and Itty Bitty Betty Blob (illustrated by Micah Player.)

I like bookstores, museums non-scary movies, swimming holes, and taking walks with my old beagle, Louie.

In a Nutshell: Itty Bitty Betty Blob, the adorable monster, returns in this picture book about facing yet another monstrous challenge. Almost as cute as the first book in terms of storyline, writing, and illustrations. Definitely recommended!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Itty Bitty Betty Blob still doesn’t fit in with her fellow monsters in Ghoulington. But she has mostly accepted herself, and knows that being fierce isn't her cup of tea. When the new school year requires all students to try for a club, Betty wants to use her new diving skills in the ‘Devil Divers’ club. However, there’s one big problem. The coach wants his divers to make a big SPLASH in the pool, while Betty can manage just a dainty ‘splish’ in the water. Will Betty once again be the misfit?
I had read the first book: 'Itty Bitty Betty Blob' last year and absolutely loved it. So it was with no hesitation that I pounced upon this ARC the minute I read “Itty Bitty Betty Blob” without even bothering to read the rest of the title or the blurb.
Is it sensible to take such risks while reviewing ARCs?
No.
Was this ARC worth the risk?
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!
Most of my feedback will be the same as before. Betty is as much a cutie patootie! She still knows herself and her likes and dislikes. At the same time, she does listen to her mother’s advice as well. Her mom is just as supportive as in the first book, setting excellent parenting goals. The colourful puffs are also back, and even more adorable this time.
The writing is exactly the same in quality, and feels just as poetic with many fun alliterations. This time, I also noticed that the text contains plenty of cleverly inserted adverbs, making the book a good option for a class on adverbs.
The illustrations are also just as fabulous, with Betty’s bright pastel colours standing out in stark contrast to the drabness of the rest of the monsters. I loved the way Betty’s meltdown was portrayed; it was the first time I actually realised how much of the titular blob she is! 😄 Betty’s speech bubbles are again written in bubblegum pink, while the rest of the text is in black. All of this adds to the visual impact.
The key difference this time is obviously in the storyline. In the first book, Betty was a bit more uncertain about not fitting into Ghoulington, but this time, her uncertainty is more about disappointing those who have certain expectations of her. Both are valid concerns for today’s kids, so hopefully, Betty’s story will teach them also that they are good as they are.
The only point where this book dips a teeny bit is that the plot is a bit more straightforward than the earlier book. There aren’t any surprises, unlike in the first one where the secret colourful forest was an unexpected twist. Of course, a surprise isn’t really required in a picture book; I just hoped for one because of the earlier experience.
Regardless, even as is, the book still delivers on almost all counts. Be it the story, the characters, the moral, or the illustrations, Itty Bitty Betty Blob makes one heck of a big SPLASH! ⛲
When I read the first Itty Bitty book, I didn’t even know that this was being planned as a series. But now that we have Book Two, I would love to have more Betty books to dive into.
Much recommended! This book will be perfect for ages 4-8. While the book can be read as a standalone, I’d definitely suggest getting both the books for the young ones in your life. It works well at homes and in classrooms, and would also make a great gift to littlies who are not sure about where they fit in their world.
4.5 stars, rounding up on the crest of a big splash!
What a great story! So well done. And I loved the mix of black and white and color on the illustrations. Highly recommend and want to check out the other ones as well. Great back to school / trying new things style story.
Our titular heroine from Itty Bitty Betty Blob returns in this wonderful sequel.
Betty joins the Devil Divers this year at Ghoulington Academy (still a great name!). As one expects in the upside-down monster world, the point isn’t a graceful swan dive but to make an enormous splash as one bellyflops. But can an itty-bitty monster do that? Maybe her mom has the answer?
As charming as ever, Betty will be loved not only by little monsters but by their adults too!
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Astra Publishing House and Hippo Books in exchange for an honest review.
What a fun, unscary monster book with a great message about being yourself and not trying to do things just like everyone else does. Betty Blob is not like all her monster classmates who like all things deep and dark and when, on the first day of school, she has to pick a club to join, she is a bit nervous about doing well. Drama club auditions don’t work out so well so she falls back on a love she already has-diving into the water. But the kind of dives that seem to be most admired by the coach, teammates and other school divers are not the kind Betty wants to do. On the day of the championship meet, Betty must decide if she will do what everyone else is doing or show her own particular style.
Creative drawings will entertain young readers and listeners and the theme of being who you want to be comes through clearly but without feeling too pedantic. Love this one and recommend it highly for kindergarten through grade 3.
Thanks for the eARC, Edelweiss and Penguin Random House.
I love these books so much! Betty is the cutest little monster around and I love that she continues to go to the colorful forest with her puff friends. As the new school year starts, she joins the diving team. She soon finds out that they only flop and crash and it makes her stomach hurt. Betty has to decide if she will be true to herself and dive in her style or the way everyone else does. Read this if you loved the first one and dive into another Betty Blob story!
This was such a JOY to read!!! You’re never too old to remember to be your magical self no matter what! Betty is the sweetest blob around the academy! Actually, she just may be the sweetest blob EVER. I absolutely loved the illustrations, the differences in colors on each page and the kind message throughout the whole book! This is a perfect book to show kids they can do anything they dream of. I can’t wait to read more books with Betty!!
This is a perfect picture book for little monsters who follow their heart and are true to themselves. A must have!
This didn't make me cry like the first book, but I did squeal in delight and coo multiple times, so Betty Blob has not lost her powers. I love her swimsuit and cap, her friends in the puffs, and just generally seeing my girl again. The world is so bleak, but thank god we have Betty.
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
The previous Itty Bitty Betty book was about being different, about picture day. Well, Bitty Betty Blob is back again! This time no picture days, oh no, it is time for afterschool activities! I was so excited when I saw this new book up on Netgalley, of course I had to request it, I really enjoyed the previous book and I was curious to see what would happen in this one. I knew it would be about diving, I mean the cover and the blurb are pretty clear about that, but what would happen there?
We see our tiny blob figure out what activities are best, she tries out for drama at first (after a whole lot of practising and stressing at home) … which yeah, don’t end that well (not a spoiler, I mean it is obvious the diving team is where it is at), and then she ends up at the diving team and because of her very dramatic splash (not intentional) she gets selected to be part of the team! And we see there that Betty Blob is happy to be part of the team and make new friends, but there are elements she doesn’t like. I could definitely imagine, I mean, OUCH, constantly flopping on your belly? That oughta be bad, even for a blob. I just wanted to hug Betty Blob and tell her to go for her own jumps. Her own dives. The ones she does with her little fluffy friends in the little water place near her home. I was rooting for Betty Blob and hoping that she would figure things out. Because she really loved the diving team. She loved the thrill. Loved the wins. Loved her team mates. She just needed to find her place. Thankfully, Betty Blob has her mom as a fantastic support, not to mention her fluffy friends.
I would have loved to have a diving team like that. As it is when I was in elementary there were no activities after school.
The illustrations were fabulous and gorgeous and colourful again! Be sure to check out the endpapers of the book, so pretty!
All in all, another inspirational and wonderful book in the series and I am curious what is next for Betty Blob! I definitely hope there is more at least~
Time has flown and it is time for Itty Bitty Betty Blob to go off to her first day of school.
What special activity will she join?
Growl With the Gruesome Glee Club? Fence with the Fanged Foils? The Dreary Drama Club?
Her mama is pushing for drama, but as you might guess from the title Betty has other ideas.
As with Book #1, Itty Bitty Betty Blob charms us all with her squishiness and endearing qualities. I love the palette choices Micah Player makes in the illustrations. Betty is a soft pink and her friends, the Puffs, are the colors of the rainbow. Meanwhile the rest of the monster world is in grayscale.
Don't miss the clever details like Mom's Extra Musty Dish Soap, the book Hamlet for Blobs, and the silly monster shapes of her classmates.
I hope we get to see more of Itty Bitty Betty Blob in future stories. Thank you to Hippo Park and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is a very cute series. When I read Itty bitty Betty Blob, I thought it was a nice setup and found everything cute. This book elevates the entire content even more.
Our little blob lives in a monster world, once which has colour only in select places, while she definitely exudes colour at all times. This time she wants to try out for an extra activity and doesn’t get much encouragement for the one she is truly interested in.
Her concerned mother actually finally helps in Betty making the splash mentioned in the cover. There is something entirely pleasing about the presentation of the story as a whole that I would recommend it to all ages despite it clearly targeting a younger generation.
I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience of this and the previous book.
The illustrations throughout are adorable. Even the scary monsters are still pretty cute, and the pink/black/gray palette is splendid.
In both of the Betty Blob books, Betty demonstrates that though she is different than all the other monsters, she will always find a way to be her true self. In this second book in the series, this means participating in an afterschool activity in her own way.
I also appreciate the character of Betty's mother, who loves and supports Betty for who she is.
One of my personal favorite moments is when Betty Blob has a meltdown and literally becomes a puddle on the floor. This so perfectly conveys the experience of a meltdown, and any parent who has tried to pick up a child mid-meltdown can attest to the fact that it is indeed like trying to pick up a puddle from the floor.
I LOVE Betty Blob...and this book!!! I already fell in love with Betty in the first book, and this book didn't disappoint at all! Betty is unapologetically herself, and she'll be a diver if she wants to be a diver! It was absolutely amazing how the author showed young readers that they will only be truly happy if they follow their heart, rather than doing what feels right, or what is expected of them. It is wildly important for young readers to see this message in the books they read, and it will serve them their entire lives. Lastly, the. ILLUSTRATIONS!!! They were so amazing I can't even put my thoughts into words. I'll just end my review with this: go read this book right now!!! It will actually make your day.
Oh, what a wholesome, lovely story by Constance Lombardo with heartwarming, expressive illustrations by Micah Player! Betty Blob is an adorable character and I love her so much! I love to swim so this picture book became extra special for me! I loved the writing, the storyline and the conclusion. And I really appreciate how encouraging and supportive Betty Blob's mother and classmates are! There are a lot of little details in the illustrations which add richness to the story and the characters. I loved this so much!
I loved the first Itty Bitty Betty Blob book, and I love this one even more! Betty is an adorably pink, happy-go-lucky type of monster (which, as we know, is not a typical monster.) When it's her first day back at school, everyone has a special club they're excited to join. Betty finds a way to pursue her dreams and, even though she's unsure and nervous at first, finds a way to make a huge splash -- in her own special way.
I can't wait for more Betty! Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Betty, the itty bitty blob, is back with another adorable adventure. This time, Betty is trying to make a splash on her first day of school. She follows her heart, even when she is nervous, and ends up having the time of her life! This is an adorable tale about trusting yourself and your abilities.
The illustrations in the book are amazing and Betty pops with her high contrast colors. Her bright design mimics her bright personality.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for early access. :)
Itty Bitty Betty Blob is a cutesy, sweet character who doesn't fit in with the spooky, scary monsters around her. The art style highlights the contrast in a funny way, and the story has a nice message about self-acceptance. This sequel will please readers who enjoyed the original book, and this will also appeal to people who are looking for picture books about water sports and school activities.
Thank you too Astra Publishing House and NetGalley for letting us read and enjoy this book.
My daughter and I really liked the First Itty Bitty Betty Blob book so I knew we needed to grab the sequel. Betty is the cutest monster who just wants to become a diver, she doesn’t dive the way the other monsters do and wants to stay true to herself. She tries other things but she wants to dive! I love the messaging of following your dreams and if you want something bad enough nothing will stop you from getting it. We loved the artwork, it’s very cutesy even for having monsters in it.
I like the first Betty Blob book, and I love this one too. Betty is always their self. But they’re going back to school, and they need to pick an activity. Mom wants them to join the drama club, but they want to join the dive team. The story is sweet. It’s told in a great way and it hits the perfect pitch with the illustrations. They take it completely over the top. This is a great read for any generation.
A itty bitty blob wants to join divers club but tries out for Drama club instead. When she doesn't make Drama but divers she's excited until she has to do belly flops all the time. It was alright. Some kids will find the cute blob cute. That's all I got about this one.
