"I didn't have time to mope. We had a criminal or two to catch, a murder rap to solve, and an ex fiancé to save." - Lilly Millenovanovich.
Rescue ex fiancé, Jake Kline. Save pastry chef, Audrey Willow. That's the plan. Mystery author, Lilly Millenovanovich finds herself up to her ears in mayhem and mischief in this latest caper. After receiving a phone call from professional hit lady, Brooke Williams, Lilly's life moves from hometown Barton, Ohio to the Gulf coast of Florida. Brooke claims to have Lilly's best friend and ex fiancé, Jake Kline under lock and key. Her directions are very clear: if Lilly wants to save Jake, come to Florida and do what Brooke asks, no matter what that is.
As if that wasn't enough on her plate, Lilly is drawn into helping Aunt Sadie's friend and pastry chef, Audrey Willow, prove she really didn't poison a food critic with her famous chocolate dessert. Or did she? Lilly manages a skilled but somewhat haphazard juggling act to work at finding the real killer while trying to avoid provoking Jake's captor from sending him to the bottom of the ocean. Both old friends and enemies enter the picture. Like Latin dreamboat, Agent Nick Galina, who stirs up emotions Lilly would like to avoid. And Mexican crime boss, Carlos Ruido, who manages to be the center of all Lilly's problems. Of course, it wouldn't be any fun without throwing an aunt or three into the mix, along with their quirky, zany behaviors.
Will Lilly rescue Jake? Will she prove Audrey Willow didn't commit murder? Devilish, Devious, and Deadly with One Bite will serve a tantalizing, scrumptious story with all the answers in this third installment of the Lilly M Mysteries.
Kathryn Long’s passion is writing mysteries, creating the intricate details and weaving them into the clues which the reader will enjoy collecting to solve the crime. However, she’s worn many hats over the years – bookseller, teacher, mom, wife, and author.
To date, readers can find her self-published cozy Lilly M Mysteries, and her traditionally published work, romantic suspense, A Deadly Deed Grows, traditional mystery Buried in Sin, and cozy mystery Boarding with Murder at online retailers. This was a book I received through the Goodreads drawings. I had never read anything by Kathryn Long, and this was a nice introduction. Although it soon became obvious that this was a book in a series, it was also a "stand-alone" book, too. I didn't feel the need to have read the others that preceded this book. The plot was basically bad guys/girls versus Lilly and her aunts. Audrey Willow is accused of killing, with her chocolate dessert, Clive Monk, a food critic. Lilly has received a call from hit lady Brooke that she must follow some clues or her ex-fiance will die. The ladies go chasing around Florida, following various clues, in the race to save the good guys/gals from the bad. At times this was a humorous read, and it certainly was a nice book to enjoy during the warm days that concluded May. I do know that I am very glad that I do not have Lilly's aunts. Fran might drive me insane!
I actually enjoyed this story more than I expected. The aunts provide a lot of comic relief, and I feel sorry for Lilly having to try to keep them safe. There are quite a few twists that make one wonder exactly who will end up being the ultimate "bad guy" as some characters seem to switch sides with alarming speed. I would definitely read more stories about this protagonist, but I'd recommend the author hire someone for a final edit. For example, one character is talking to Audrey, yet he asks if Audrey is on a boat that's at sea (the character on the boat was Teo). This type of error is easy to make when you're writing, but should be caught by a good editor. The errors, while not many, did catch my attention and disrupted the flow of the story. Since this was a sporadic error, it didn't ruin my overall impression of the author's skill or my enjoyment of the story. I would recommend this author to friends who enjoy light action stories (I can't call it a mystery, per se, as the only real mystery was who framed Audrey, and it turned out the "who" didn't matter that much to the plot).
Lilly has heard that one of her crazy Aunts has a friend in the bakery business, and that she has been charged with the murder of a famous food critic. The murder took place in Florida. At the same time Lilly receives a note containing plane tickets to Florida and hotel reservations there from an old nemesis stating that she needs to get to Florida quickly. She figures it has something to do with the murder of the food critic.
What Lilly doesn’t know is that when she gets to Florida all three of her crazy Aunts have beat her there to lend support to Aunt Sadie’s friend. She knows with their help it will not be a simple case to solve!
I really love these mysteries! This is the third in the Lilly M. Mysteries and I have not been able to solve the murder on my own until the last page when everything comes together! Lilly’s Aunts make life so difficult for her but at the same time so hilarious! And then there’s the sexy ICE Agent, Nick Galina; he just makes me melt! Keep writing Kathryn, I look forward to reading about Lilly and all the trouble she gets into!!
As usual awesomeness. Can't wait for the next adventure. No one solves a crime the way these girls do. Just waiting to see if Jake is going to be her man.
