The Winter Court #3

A Hallow of Storm and Ruin

Rate this book
Winter’s Realm calls me the Slave Queen.

They call my love, Vale, a traitor—and far, far worse.

Lucky for them, I don’t have time for gossip, not with a troop of humans to protect, a magical hallow to find, and rebels to ally with. All that and Winter’s Realm gets colder by the day. With colder temperatures the monsters that don’t live in castles come out to play.

The rebels, as dangerous as they have shown themselves to be, might be my best chance at survival and getting revenge on King Magnus. That is, if the rebels will have me at all. I am, after all, the Cruel King’s daughter. From what I’ve heard King Harald Falk deserved that title. He was vicious and cold and unpredictable.

That’s what they all say.

All of them except for one person. A fae who, if they told their story, would throw the kingdom on its head. Just like I plan to do when I avenge my family or die trying.

A Hallow of Storm and Ruin a dual POV fae fantasy romance filled with secrets, a steamy romance, and adventure. If you like the twists and turns of Throne of Glass and the adventure and lore of Game of Thrones, you’ll love this installment in The Winter Court Series.

A Hallow of Storm and Ruin is intended for readers over 18 years of age.

I love this series! The storyline is captivating, and I love all the new characters! I can not wait for the revenge I know is coming! The extra chapters from Thantrel and Thyra's point of view were an added bonus! Spice level has definitely upped in this book, but the storyline is amazing! This third installment is by far my favorite. I'm very thankful to have had the opportunity as an ARC reader for this series so far!

This story just keeps getting better and better with each book. I really enjoyed the new characters throughout this book. Vale and Neve I just can’t get over how perfect they are together. I really enjoyed how we have a better understanding of mates in this book. They were talked about a few times in previous books but I really like that they were incorporated more within this book. I really love how we got to see Neves twin a lot more in this book! Thyra is quite honestly a badass, but I really like how she’s starting to warm up to Neve. I might be biased being a twin myself, but I really like seeing them create a new bond with one another. I was definitely not expecting a new enemy to be added into this book, but man was it a shocker! I can’t wait to see how the shadow king has a role in all that’s already going on. I cannot wait for the next book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Ashley never ceases to please me. Her world building is superb, and im a sucker for world building. Neve and Vale have so many points in this series that are relatable, with their growth within themselves and with eachother, and makes me thrilled to read of their adventures. The thrill keeps me reading and the banter keeps me laughing.

Definitely a middle plot book in the series. Jumping between multiple POV’s got confusing, and the one random animated image in the middle of the book really took me out. Not sure if I will continue the series, we will see when the next book drops. Overall enjoyed the read but wasn’t in the top for me.

I love the direction this series is taking and each new character that is added. I breezed through this book even though it's gigantic because I just could not put it down. I'm so excited for the next one to see what comes from all the important things that happened in this one.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this. I went in with an open mind as I didn’t enjoy the second book as much as the first. However this one has BLOWN my mind.

Fated mates ✅
Found family ✅
A sprinkling of spice ✅
An epic journey ✅

Neve and Thyras found relationship starts to blossom and I can see them being a great pair.

Will Thyra accept her mating bond? I hope so

Neve and vales mating bond is EVERYTHING!

An epic action packed book that kept me engaged and I didn’t find myself skim reading at all (which is a miracle for me). I’m already eager for book 4!

4 star read for me. Not quite 5 stars but not far off

*ARC REVIEW*
*spoilers if you have not read the first two books in the series*

This book picks up a little bit after the end of A Lord of Snow and Greed (book two), Neve and Vale killed Roar (deserved) after finding out that he was selling human slaves to the vampire kingdom. It follows Neve as learns more about her heritage and the realm. She discovers hidden and cursed kingdoms, new/old family and allies.
The political intrigue, the build up of war, the mystery was beautifully written. There’s a certain character that I wished stayed dead (cough cough ROAR) but here’s to hoping he kicks the bucket soon 🫣
I love that Neve and Vale are soulmates, FINALLY. And I can’t wait to see more of Thyra and Thantril’s bond and how that grows because I think she has a soft spot for him.
Thyra and Neve(Isolde) being sisters I saw coming but TWINS?
The cliffhanger has me in shambles, I can’t wait for the fourth and final book in this series!!

If you like lost princess/found family, touch her/him and die tropes, unique magic systems, political intrigue or if you read and loved From Blood and Ash, Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Rose, I highly recommend this series!! 🩵

What is wrong with me? Seriously, the first two books I mostly point out everything that drives me nuts, as this author is huge on tried and true tropes. I bring up how easily I’ve predicted stuff to happen. I say time and again I probably won’t finish the series.

But I still don’t put the thing down and now I’m stuck waiting until December for the next installment of what appears to be a 6 or more book series.

And then I give this, book #3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars?

Yeah. I did.

The book even opens with my most hated trope of all time where someone you think is dead is alive… because of magic. Just magic mumbo jumbo that is quickly skipped over and I’m left dealing with it.

Fine. I pulled up my big girl panties and dealt with it. I even guessed right on another familial pairing… though I never would have guessed the member falling for Thyra- yes, it’s official, Neve’s twin is alive and FINALLY we are learning about her and the rebels.

Frankly, she’s a cold fish, but I think she’ll eventually thaw.

It’s nice having more that just Neve and Vale’s POV now that the cast is expanded. In fact, getting away from the never-ending game that is Magnus and his courtship festival thing is the breath of fresh air this book sorely needed.

If I could make one suggestion though it would be MORE RIIS BROTHERS! Heck, I want multiple books of Leyv’s life and that of his virtual army of charming progeny. Please!!! It’s the Riis boys that kept me going in spots. We could use a few of the gals as well.

All 3 Hallows have been found by various parties and I’m pretty sure book 4 will be about alliances and sides chosen as the kingdom prepares for the upcoming war for the throne of Winter’s Realm.

I have no idea how the author managed to stuff my ebook with the catnip I needed to keep reading, but kudos for that! I’ll even ignore the ongoing tropes and meh dialogue between characters. And yes, I’ll read book 4 when it releases in 8 months.

Fae Court politics, intrigue and romance

This is a brilliant book 3 in the "The Winter Court" series by Ashley McLeo, set in the Fae world from the "Coven of Shadows and Secrets" series. Written in dual POVs of Neve and Vale with a few chapters from other POVs scattered throughout.

This one follows on from "A Lord of Snow and Greed" and it's worth reading the first two books to understand the characters and what's happening better. The story is easy to get lost in, with an intricate plot, great characters with brilliant friendships and chemistry between them, some surprising new characters, a lovely steamy romance and some wonderful twists and turns.

Following on from freeing the human slaves from Lord Roar, Neve and Vale are working to get them somewhere where they can live peaceful lives but keep facing new challenges along the way. Neve is also trying to find out more about her past and work out what she wants to do going forward, after all she's learnt. Her relationship with Vale is still developing but while feelings from both sides are growing stronger, he's starting to worry that she deserves better than he can offer following on from his own discoveries.

If you enjoy fantasy romance with quick-paced action, secrets & mysteries, court politics & intrigue, magic, a fantasy saga storyline and a brilliant slow-build steamy romance, this story will not disappoint; with some great twists and a fantastic ending. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book via BookFunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Book 3 what can I say about you
I was an ARC reader for this bad boy and when I got accepted, let’s just say that tears happened and that’s not a lie. It’s so crazy to me but I started this series in December but I’ve had the books since April 2024, I don’t know why I waited so long to read them but I’ve devoured every single book. Each book kept getting better, I can’t even say which book is my favourite because I think that all of them are if I’m being honest. Book 3 took me on a journey, first of all the world building was top tier, I loved it. I loved knowing the history and backgrounds.
Secondly, the Riss brothers got so much growth and I loved that. I get so giddy about them
New characters showed up and I was happy with that
Found family is so adorable, I can’t get enough of them
Can we talk about Prince Vale and Neve because I have no words for them, they are the true definition of enemies to lovers, need I say more
So many magical creatures were introduced especially the Pegasus which I’m a sucker for
I can go on and on about how much I love this series
One of my favourite series to date
The last chapters had me so anxious but god damn it was so well written I couldn’t get enough. Really reminded me of Six of Crows and the tension between the two ( not naming who) was perfection
This book does not deserve 5 stars but so much more
I’m excited for book 4 and you bet that I’ll do a reread of the series. I did not want this book to end because the book had me in such a deep chokehold that won’t let go

A Hollow of Storm and Ruin by Ashley McLeo is nothing short of spectacular! As the third installment in the Winter Court series, this book raises the stakes and delivers an unforgettable continuation of Neve and Vale's story. From the very first page, it sweeps you up and doesn't let go, leaving you reeling from all the twists and turns even days after you've finished reading.

Picking up seamlessly where A Lord of Snow and Greed left off, the story plunges Neve and Vale into the aftermath of freeing the human slaves from Roar. You'd think the journey to safety might offer some reprieve, but of course, McLeo keeps things unpredictable and action-packed. Along the way, they encounter new creatures, face unforeseen challenges, and meet fascinating characters—some old, some new—all of whom enrich the story in unique and exciting ways.

Neve's personal journey is particularly compelling as she delves deeper into her past and begins to shape her future. Her evolving relationship with Vale remains central to the narrative, blending romance and tension in a way that keeps you rooting for them.

Ashley McLeo has truly outdone herself with this installment. The world-building, character development, and sheer emotional depth make A Hollow of Storm and Ruin the best in the series so far. If you're a fan of fantasy with rich storytelling and unforgettable characters, this book series is an absolute must-read!

OMG!! Where do I begin?!?!?! This book kept me on the edge of my seat and boy it did NOT disappoint! Let me Get this out of the way first:

I received a free copy as an ARC reader. So, everything you read posted IS OF MY OWN OPINION. This post might contain spoilers so if you want to skip this review and jump straight into the book that is the best way to go in my opinion.

Now that is out of the way!! FATED MATES OMFG!!!! At first I didn’t think Neve and Vale would actually fall in love with each other. I just assumed that it was as Neve put it ‘A Marriage of convenience’ but to read while they are on the run that they are FATED MATES! I fell in love with their love story even more. Now the return of Roar that was NOT at all what I expected, I thought he died when Neve and Vale pushed him down that really long tunnel shaft. I totally forgot he could shift. So, for Roar to side with the King and cause MORE chaos I was unprepared and ready to throw some hands. What I was really unprepared for was for Neve to accept her TRUE identity (NO SPOILERS GIVEN HERE ON THIS PART) but I am REALLY AND TRULY glad she did! Now with HER new allies and Vale and his family at side her she can claim what is rightfully hers!

I am SOOO hyped and ready for book 4 I cannot wait! Ashely has written an amazing world, characters, and story lines that I cannot wait to see how this ends! Fingers crossed Neve and Vale have little ones running around!! (Hint Hint wink wink)

3.5 stars

I felt that their relationship was a bit lackluster. At least them actually forming a bond was. Vale was adamant that he would give Neve up when the time came so she could have a prosperous future with a "true" Prince or someone worthy. Then the mate bond gives them matching tats and he says "I no longer doubted I should be with Neve, and would do my best to live up to the great fate the stars had gifted to me."
All doubt is gone? He no longer thinks she should marry above him so she can have better alliances? Protection? An easier time ruling? No way these doubts and thoughts just disappeared. I'd be more willing to accept this change of heart had he come to this conclusion prior to their coupling/ mate bond snapping in place. These fears and insecurities don't just go away with a snap of your fingers.
A lot of the book felt like the above example. The characters didn't feel like fleshed out people with complicated thoughts and feelings anymore, things just worked out way too easily. Not to mention the entire thing just felt slow and like it just wouldn't stop dragging. The only part of the book that really kept my attention was the last third of it. The story, adventure and relationships finally felt like they were developing and then it just ends on a cliffhanger with a new villain with only one book left.
I just hope the last book starts out strong or it's only to be a very long conclusion.

Review for A Hallow of Storm and Ruin

*Book 2 & 3 Spoilers Ahead*

I've been sitting on pins and needles waiting to know what happens with Neve and Vale for months and the wait was well worth it! Ashley delivers in her third book in the series.

Neve, our female lead leaves us in book 2 after freeing Lord Roars slaves. She's such a true badass of a main character every time we see her, and she never gets "annoying" like some lead characters from other books have.

And then there's Prince Vale, one my OG book boyfriends. I forget how much I love him until I start reading him again and I can't get enough!

Vale & Neves scene in the caverns will forever live rent free in my mind!

Two of my favorite things about the way Ashley writes - first, she introduces new characters and races seamlessly. I absolutely loved meeting and getting to know the new characters and, especially the interludes throughout. A little peek into the minds of others, but just for second. I ate that up!

And secondly, I always know the last few chapters are going to be balls to the wall, full throttle and it's SO much fun. She writes so well that you're there with them, living the plot too.

Now to sit on the edge of my seat until we find out what happens next with Isolde & Vale and now, Thyra and Thantrel!

So good, As always, highly recommend!

This is the third book in the Winter Court Series. Book three picks up where book two ends.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. My opinion of the book is my own and was not influenced by anyone.

Our protagonists Neve and Vale are still on the run and they’re now joined by all their friends. The book is told from both protagonists POV switching back and forth between them. In addition, we have some interludes from some other char that enhance the story as it unfolds.

Though our protagonists and their friends adventures we find some surprises we didn’t see coming and some we did. One surprise definitely made me mad and I won’t tell you what it was as I don’t want to spoil the story. I did have a feeling it was gonna happen but I certainly hoped not.

The book doesn’t really end in a cliffhanger but it does set up for a continuation into book four. I hope this series goes on for several more books as I’ve grown to love the characters. And I want to see that pompous King Magnus get what he deserves.

The book is filled with lots of action, advanced some romance and a wonderful mix of all. If you enjoy fantasy adventure with all of these things then you should give this series a try. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I have followed this series from the beginning. Ashley McLeo is an amazing author who has been perfecting her world-building skills. Every time I read her books, I am immediately sucked in and can’t put the book down til I reach the end. I am itching already for the next book and to know what is in store for Neve, Vale and the whole gang.

I have loved seeing Neve’s character develop into a strong female lead who is not afraid to say what she means or stand up for what is right. Getting to see her evolve into a leader of so many downtrodden is very powerful!

Although I have loved Vale throughout the series, I am looking forward to seeing more of his character and his side of the story. His own family drama and how that will effect the story. He has a lot of potential to be a powerful leader and warrior and want to see more of that side of the story.

Overall, this story is AMAZING and continues to follow the series perfectly. A Hallow of Storm and Ruin does not diverge from the quality of this series. The book is just the right length (maybe a smidge too long) and goes into so much detail of the different groups/races/fae in this world. I cannot wait to see how Neve and Vale’s adventure continues to unfold.

A Hallow of Storm and Ruin is book 3 in The Winter Court series. It is a Fantasy Romance and the spice definitely beefs up in this book!

At the beginning of the book there is a summary of books 1 & 2 to give you a refresher before reading book 3, so helpful & cool! I’ve never seen another author do this, but it should be done in every series in my opinion.

I’m absolutely in love with this series.

Book 3 reminds me of some of my favorite fantasy series:
❄️The Deserted Kingdom reminds me of the dwarves mountain in Rings Of Power.
❄️The Coinary reminds me of the bank from Harry Potter
❄️”You shall not pass” how can you not think of Lord Of The Rings?!

AHOSAR is so captivating it’s full of magic, adventure, and all of your favorite fantasy tropes!

Neve and Vale are still trying to save the winter court and everyone who lives there from King Magnus. A Hallow of Storm and Ruin tells of their journey to find anyone who would or could help them in their fight against King Magnus and save the kingdom.

A Hallow of Storm and Ruin is a great story to get lost in for a few hours. It will keep you glued to the pages racing to the end as its story is unveiled. The many twists and turns will keep you hanging on for more. Once I started reading it I couldn’t stop I had to keep going no matter how long it took. I enjoyed all the magic and the making of the swords.

Neve and Vale’s love will also have you waiting for more as their relationship deepens and continues to grow despite their thoughts and all the things others say about them. Vale seems to think he is not worthy of Neve because of his background. Neve think she is not good enough for Vale because she was a vampire’s blood slave.

I can’t wait to read more in this wonderful universe. I recommend A Hallow of Storm and Ruin who enjoys a good romantic fantasy and who also likes stories about the fae. Grab a copy of A Hallow of Storm and Ruin today and join the adventure!

I started this year off with my first book reading A Kingdom of Frost and Malice and ended it with my last book being A Hallow of Storm and Ruin! Each book has captivated me more and more & I have loved every bit of this series.
I loved all the new characters added in A Hallow of Storm and Ruin, and well as all the many twists and turns the story took! The spice level was also upped in this book which was an added bonus!
I loved that Neve and Vale ended up as mates, and Thyra & Thantril ended up as mates too, I can't wait to hear more of their story! I loved their added bonus chapters at the end of the book, I wish it would have fit better into the original story, but was glad to have the chapters anyways I could get them!
I was not expecting for there to be another enemy added to this book, but loved the twist it brought. And the fact that Roar lived was infuriating, but made sense for the story. But I'll also hope he gets unalived again! 🫣
I was thrilled to be an ARC reader for this book & can't wait to have the physical copy added to my shelves as well! Now to have to wait for A Crown of Ice and Fury to come out 😵‍💫

I love this series! The characters have really wormed their way into my heart and have taken up residence there. The continuation for this series is amazing and I can't wait for book 4 to come out! This series has stayed in my head since the first book came out. Make sure you read the first 2 books before this one so that you understand the characters and their relationships.

I absolutely love the POV changing between the main characters with some thrown in from other characters, and it really adds to the story and reading experience. Neve has not let anything change who she is and her experiences have brought her to this point. Seeing that from her POV and other characters' POV is amazing. The world building continues, and you get a clearer picture of the world as they have ventured from the main areas of the first 2 books. I love world building, but it's amazing that there is also plot with the world building! It makes it the world building easier to read because there's actually things happening. Sometimes, world building makes books move slower, but that was not a problem here. This book really sets up for book 4 and I have some high expectations because of what Ashley has put out so far! The enemies just keep piling up. Will Neve have to change who she is to win? What costs will there be for the characters?

This story has spice (not over the top and it is not the main point), love, mates, political intrigue, action, found family in more ways than one, self discovery, coming into one's own power and self, heists, and treasure hunts.

I love this series and I love all the new characters, we find Neve and Vale taking the slaves and humans to a safe place unfortunately many dying along the way.
Then we find Roar is not dead afterall and is back blackmailing King Magnus into giving him a role at Winters Court and also giving him the Hand of Princess Saga.
The Queen admits to Rhistel his true parentage {he does not take it well} and the Queen has to take over his mind. She then begs Lord Riis her true love and the twins father to take Saga and find Vale and Neve.
Vale and Neve then find the Dwarves who are in hiding within the Mountain who take in the humans and ally with Neve who on leaving the Dwarves Kingdom ia captured by the rebels.
Neve then finds her Twin sister which doesn't go well at the Start.
The good news is Neve and Vale finally find they are SOULMATES.

I won't write anymore as i don't want to give any real spoilers
This the third book on the series is long but brilliant i can't wait for the next.

I received an ARC free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. My opinion of the book is my own

I think I thought I was getting into a romantasy with this series. There’s definitely a romance element, which might have been the best part of book two! And it’s decidedly fantasy, almost epic in scope. This book is a middle book. The story continues, a mystery is revealed, and the bad guys get more evil if you can believe it. But the series as a whole struggles a bit with a couple key things. The pacing drags despite a lot happening. The language is faintly archaic which adds some nice verisimilitude or something, but there’s no change in wordiness as the drama picks up. But if you loved reading LOTR, you’ll be fine here. What’s hardest for me is that some truly horrific and violent things happen throughout and they’re just… there… and because the pacing is flat, it leaves us unsure whether we’re supposed to take it seriously. Was it for the shock value? Because I can’t tell. And now with Vale being transformed into a boring accessory for Neve.. I’m not sure I’ll continue. The adventure was grand and I want more of that, but I’m really struggling without palpable excitement of SOME sort.

This is the third book in the Winter Court series, which is part of the author’s Crowns of Magic world. Tropes and themes include political/court intrigue, rebellion, marriage of convenience, hidden identities, banter, a heist, found family, slowburn, and hidden identities. This is a bit spicier than book one so it is for the adult crowd only.

The Lovely: Eeek! this book was an amazing ride of twists and turn, mystery and romance. The pace and tension don’t let up so buckle in from the start.

Also Lovely: I fell even more in love with the characters - main and secondary, new and old. We meet some exciting new characters, including one I didn’t see coming. We get to spend more time with Vale and Neve and I was excited to see how their relationship developed.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars 3/5 Flames

Recommendation: I like to explain this series as ACOTAR meets Game of Thrones but set entirely in the Winter Court. The series has been richly put together such that you become engrossed in the world and plot. Book four is due to release at the end of 2025.

Thank you Ashley for letting me read this book ahead of the release date!

This is my first time reading Ashley’s work and since this was a series and most likely was necessary to read book 1 & 2, which I devoured because sigh… the story was so easy to go through, world building was easy to follow and the adventure that we’d follow was just so good!

Book 3 was no different! It was really fun to go on Neve and Vale’s journey in this book as well as all the new character introductions 👭, heists, new magic, and the cliffhanger!

Overall, I’d recommend this book if you like to read a romantasy series if From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout and The Savage Lands by Stacey Marie Brown had a baby. This romantasy series has great character development, awesome world building, and fun banter. I can’t wait for what comes next!

Hallow of Storm and Ruin was such a spectacular read. I had a great time discovering new places and meeting the new characters. I have to say the city Dergia was my favorite part of the story. Loads of new information was given, and I loved it, but I'm even more curious about those Drassil trees now. As for the rest of it, this book was exciting. I enjoyed the romance and intrigue. The excellent world-building continues, and the story continues to get more complex as the story goes on. Some things that I've been anticipating finally happened, but also a few things that I've been dreading. I loved all the twists and turns that Ashley threw at us.

The ending left me in a complete state of shock. Not only was it the stuff of nightmares, but remarkably, things are ten times worse than when they started. All that plus the ominous epilogue has me terrified about what's going to happen next. The wait for the next book is going to be a rough one.

An Exciting 4.5 Star Fantasy Read!⭐️💖❄️
A Hallow of Storm and Ruin: The Winter Court Series, Book 3
By: Ashley McLeo

This author continues to outdo all of her previous work with the writing in this series!👏

We return a little after Neve, Vale, etc, have freed the human slaves from Roar's mines and are travelling to get them somewhere safe!🙏🏼 They will meet and make friends and allies on this trip, as well as lose friends along the way.🥺😍

Neve and Vale are able to take the time to build on their relationship. It has a wonderful bonus for them.

We learn more about her ancient family and how that could affect things now.💥

This story kept me glued the pages. It's chock full of surprises and exciting reveals. Some reveals are not good ones!😳

I'm already eager for book 4.⭐️

I absolutely LOVE this series, add a couple of huge surprises and twists, and a heist - this is probably the best one of the series yet. I devoured this book it was so well written, I was up until 5 am because I couldn't stop. I don't know what it is about Neve's story, the characters, but this is without a doubt one of my favorites and it keeps getting better as it goes. I really loved how everything is happening across the realm at this point and you start to realize how vast this world is. Because of this, the author added side scenes in between things from different POVs to keep the reader in the know as to what else is going on at the same time as Neve's journey. I really can't wait to see what happens next!
