Can the mind function separately from the brain? Can machines have conscious minds? Is Google Maps part of the conscious mind? Hans Dooremalen provides answers to these three and five other questions about the conscious mind in an easy to read introduction to the philosophy of mind.
Hans Dooremalen is assistant professor at Tilburg University. He teaches philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. Together with Herman de Regt and Maurice Schouten he wrote Exploring Humans, Philosophy of Science for the Social Sciences, A Historical Introduction.
Even though I was very confused while reading this book, I still got a 8.5 for this course. But I think that is mainly because of the lectures, because I think understanding philosophical ideas from the page is very hard for me. Still, it's a comprehensive, introductory book with lots of references for further reading, if one is interested.
I had to read this book for my philosphy of consciousness course. I don't typically add schoolbooks to my goodreads, but since I read this book cover to cover I feel like I deserve the added pages lol.
If for whatever reason you want to read this book I would say it isn't a bad one. It gives a pretty quick but comprehensive overview of the history and current state of the questions surrounding mind/body connection. The way it is written is also pretty accesible, and it uses plenty of pop culture references to explain certain concepts (like star trek, and the big bang theory). So it's not completely dry either.
Would I have picked this book up if it wasn't required reading for my midterm tomorrw? probably not. But that has more to do with my own interests not aligning with what is discussed in the book rather than the quality of this book.
