Always love to learn about New Zealand and I learned quite a few interesting things I didn't already know in this. Unforfunately, this book suffers from trying to put together a complete itinerary desite the limited truly interesting locations used in The Hobbit trilogy. Many locations are not really interesting as they are only used for compositing shots. The author really stretches out the Hobbit related material, adding in interesting but unrelated stops such as Lake Wanaka and Dunedin. Information about locations is then hard to find if you don't read the whole thing and it would not be easy to make your own itinerary out of this.
Also the edition I had was big but written very small in a thin font, and some texts and quotes were even smaller. I'm not old but this was hard on the eyes...
With beautiful photographs, interesting and detailed information and behind-the-scenes knowledge by the cast and creators of The Hobbit, this book is really interesting for every Hobbit fan. If you ever plan on going to New Zealand and are a Middle-Earth fan, this book is a good starting point.
When Brodie released his location guide book for Lord of the Rings, it was completely understandable. LOTR, after all, showcased New Zealand's natural beauty and introduced it to the world. The Hobbit, however, doesn't have the same thing going for it - shot, as it was, "in some of New Zealand's most green studios". Ultimately, the issue with this book is the same complaint that has been levelled at The Hobbit films: needs more Hobbit.
A travel guide for tourists presented as an alongside behind-the-scenes book about The Hobbit film trilogy. Personally, I don't need any inducement to see New Zealand in person, but if, for some reason, you haven't heard of the majestic beauty, this could be the perfect catalyst to travel there.
I went on a Red Carpet tour of Lord of the Rings locations in New Zealand in 2011 (when the Hobbit movies were being filmed). It was fun to "revisit" some of those locations by reading this book. There are a lot of new locations in the Hobbit as well. Since I doubt I'll ever make it back to New Zealand at least this way I could visit vicariously.
Nice pictures. Focused on the beauty of New Zealand, but includes some tiny bits not mentioned in the behind-the-scenes extras of the movies. Not enough on the movies for my taste, but someone just interested in NZ or planning a trip might like it.
