Rate this book
The second book in a warm and beautifully observed farm adventure series from Nicola Baker, star of Our Farm in the Dales. Perfect for fans of Jacqueline Wilson and The Snow Foal. Illustrated by Rachael Dean.

Ten-year-old Ava has swapped city life for mud, wellies and animals on Whistledown Farm. With the arrival of Autumn and as the leaves begins to fall, she rescues a tawny owl called Ruby. As Ava helps Ruby, she soon realises that learning to love means letting go as well . . .

Whilst firmly set in the present day, Nicola Baker has managed to imbue the Whistledown Farm stories with a really classic feel, and this autumn-set instalment has a particularly cosy vibe. Nature-loving children will be delighted by Ava's latest rescue, a young tawny owl she names Ruby, but as Ava settles back into rural life, even joining the local school this time, the mysterious loss of some charity collection money threatens to ruin her reputation and spoil everything. Can Ava find the culprit and clear her name? A really charming story that I would have adored as a nine or ten year old who was always keen to bottle-feed a lamb or make a den in the woods, not to mention solve a mystery!
