Addiction Recovery Skills to Rewire the Brain is a clearly written and helpful guide in many respects. Besides being well-researched and addressing key recovery tools such as relapse prevention and emotional health, it is also a frank analysis of the personal struggles facing even the most determined individual following all the suggestions in the book. The percentage of addicts who recover and stay drug and alcohol free for more than three years is depressingly small. Estimates vary but most put it at about ten percent.
The author, himself a former addict, is quick frank about the difficulties involved and provides helpful advice as well as worksheets for self-inventory, self-affirmation, and suggestions for recognizing the “triggers” which can lead to relapses. Although the author only refers to Twelve Step programs in passing, it is clear that he is knowledgeable and that many of the suggestions have actually been available through the “Big Book” of Alcoholic Anonymous, and the modified version adopted by Narcotics Anonymous.
One regrets that when insisting that isolation was one of the major factors of relapse, he fails to mention the availability of AA and NA meetings around the world which not only provide relief from isolation, but opportunities for service, the aid of a sponsor in working one’s recovery program, and the sense of community and solidarity when facing the struggle of recovery. Nevertheless, this book is a useful guide and used with a recovery group, the support of a counselor or other advisor, could prove to be quite useful.
Navigating through the maze of addiction can often feel like walking in a dense fog, but "Addiction Recovery Skills to Rewire the Brain" provided the clarity so many look for. This workbook is a lifesaver. It doesn't merely scratch the surface but delves deep into the mechanisms of addiction, making the abstract concept of "rewiring the brain" accessible and tangible.
The mindfulness exercises resonated with me, transforming how I perceive and manage cravings. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by them, I now have tools to recognize, understand, and address these urges. The insights on preventing relapse are invaluable, shedding light on potential pitfalls and offering strategies to maintain progress.
Above all, this book is a gentle reminder that recovery is a journey and not a destination. It's about learning, growing, and finding a mentally healthy path forward. The compassionate and non-judgmental approach is refreshing, and it made me feel seen and understood.
For anyone battling addiction or supporting a loved one through it, this workbook is a beacon of hope. It provides both the knowledge and the practical skills needed for a successful recovery. Highly recommended!
“Addiction Recovery Skills to Rewire the Brain: A Mindful Workbook to Understand Addiction, Stop Unhealthy Behaviors, Manage Cravings, and Prevent Relapse to Start Living a Mentally Healthy Life" offers a practical approach to addiction recovery through mindful techniques and evidence-based strategies. While the workbook effectively covers a wide array of topics related to addiction, its execution could benefit from a more engaging presentation.
The workbook's strength lies in its intention to equip readers with the tools to break unhealthy patterns and cultivate lasting mental well-being. The incorporation of mindfulness techniques for managing cravings and triggers is a commendable approach. Additionally, the workbook's interactive exercises encourage self-reflection and personal growth.
This book was both insightful and useful. I enjoyed learning more about Potter's story and it gave me a sense of relatability that I've never really had reading other books on addiction. It's pretty hard to listen to somebody that's never gone through the same struggle as you but claim to have the solutions to your problems, I never felt that way about this book.
I also found it useful for someone struggling with something other than substance-abuse (most conversations about addiction mainly focus on substance-abuse which isn't particularly useful for behavioral addictions) and found the provided resources, guides and techniques particularly helpful and not just regurgitated "how to" articles on addiction.
I got through this book fairly quick because of how interesting and insightful it is and I'll be returning to it for near-future reference as well.
The author does a great job of analyzing the root causes of addiction. He anchors his analysis with science, and based on his personal experience. The book provides information on brain structure, pleasure receptors and triggers of addiction. He approaches addiction with humility and compassion rather than characterizing substance abuse as a character flaw. This book is useful for those experiencing addiction, and for anyone hoping to gain a greater understanding of people dealing with addiction.
Most of us have addictions. Everyone has their own. Eric, at the beginning of the book, talks about the wrong way to acquire your own. But most importantly, he shows ways to overcome them. The book includes workbook templates that you can use. You don't have to have severe addictions. Many of my friends think that they do not have addictions, but they have carbohydrate addiction and excess weight, which also destroy and shorten their lives, but more slowly. I recommend the book.
“Addiction Recovery Skills to Rewire the Brain” provides a clear and logical explanation of addiction and recovery. It methodically dissects the process, illustrating how the brain functions and why altering habits can be challenging. The parts on cravings and relapse were particularly beneficial, emphasizing that recovery involves more than just willpower. It's a practical and valuable resource for anyone struggling with addiction. I highly recommend it!
Good work Willpower is a potent skill, trait, or command. But it’s fickle, as it often fizzles when addiction in any form rears its head. It just dissolves like salt in water. This book elaborates on several laudable aspects of causative factors for addiction and prescribes techniques to deal with each situation. I applaud the author’s efforts. I especially appreciate the introduction's perspective, which utilizes his addiction experiences.
Just finished this book and wow, it's a real eye-opener. If you're wrestling with addiction, this book gives you the lowdown on how the brain ticks, with some super handy tips and real stories to boot. It's not just heavy science stuff. If you're after a easy guide on getting through addiction, give this a shot. I recommend.
Like almost all books of this genre, this book claims to give the reader the tools to overcome addiction, but is actually just an excuse for the author to talk about himself.
This book was well written. I found particularly enlightening the six stages of change. It puts the responsibility of change into the addict's lap, for which people struggling with all types of addiction can find empowering.
This is an interesting book on addiction recovery. I enjoyed and learned about the six criteria and stages of change. The worksheets seemed helpful but hard to use in kindle version.
I really enjoyed this book! I was able to read it within a week and it was straight the point filled with useful information. I also really liked how real and honest the author was and it helped me feel like I wasn't alone in my struggles with addiction while reading this book. 10/10 recommend!
Not worth wasting your time on. Just generic run of the mill information. I don't see how the information rewires the brain, misleading title. Give it a miss..
I did not know I was getting a workbook! So glad it includes tangible steps and skills. A great read for untangling the meds of addiction in any capacity
Eric Potter has created a work that is easy to understand with extremely practical tools included. He writes with knowledge and empathy, understanding how difficult addiction is, and offering hope and a path to recovery. Highly recommend!
