For spring vacation, the boys went to the mountains in the far north to ski. There they met a Laplander family that had a reindeer named Prince. The children and Prince had a wonderful time playing in the snow. One day as Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr were skiiing back to their cabin, they became lost in a big snowstorm. A wholesome and simple story of a family ski trip and fun in the snow. In addition, the family visits some Laplanders, tragedy is avoided, and new friendships are formed. The independent and adventurous Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr are of another time and place yet their stories are still relevant today.

This is one of our favorite books in this series. It has all the elements of the others (the boys learning to do something on their own, falling flat on their face and getting up again with great rewards in the end) and it also has beautiful insight into a culture far different than the one the boys come from. Our son and I could read this book an infinite amount of times and still want more.

I love these old stories for sentimental reasons since I used to check out Lindman books on repeat as a small child. Since they are back in print, I've been reading them with my youngest children, who also really enjoy them. Today's selection was the triplet boys' spring trip to Lapland. We laughed at the term "spring" since this trip was a very wintry one in the farthest north of Scandinavia. They meet a family they refer to as "Laplanders," which we learned afterwards is now considered a derogatory term for the Sami people (though I'm not really sure why, since it seems the equivalent of calling someone who lives in Texas a Texan. But who am I to say? It was very exciting that this family had a boy for the triplets to play with, as well as a fun dog and, yes! a reindeer. Those friends even rescue them when the boys get lost in a snowstorm.

As a child, I loved the first series of books by Maj Lindman about the Swedish triplet girls. I also read the series about the triplet boys. They all have good moral lessons too - this one about friendship.
I bought a copy recently to keep. It's soft-cover and smaller format, printed in China - not like the larger hard-cover books I remember borrowing from the library as a youngster.

I was read these as a child and have very fond memories of them, along with their companion stories about Flicka, Ricka and Dicka. However, don't expect too much. They are all pretty simplistic. This one has a complete story though :)
