Knitting is back in fashion– Madonna, Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker number among the many celebrities who have taken it up. Knitting was once a past time associated with Grandmothers and elderly neighbours, but now, those who would have dismissed it as an old ladies hobby cannot resist the charm of clacking needles of an evening. The range of yarns and patterns on offer has increased and the designs and yarns follow current fashions. For the more adventurous the ideal of designing a one off creation has a definite appeal and it is not as hard as you think. My son who has been used to me knitting throughout his life was amazed when he went off to university to find his new housemates were fellow knitters. Suddenly the idea that his mother might actually be trendy was dawning on him. Since then he is proud of my knitting, posting pictures of my creations on his facebook page and happily showing off his latest knitted scarf (this had been knitted in the exact colours and pattern of the designer one he had pointed out to me in a shop with a hefty price tag!) My book will help guide your through the initial stages of learning to knit, types of needles, yarn and stitch basics, the importance of blocking, hints and tips plus loads more useful information. There are a couple of patterns to get you going and links to websites with 1,000 of free patterns for you to download and explore your new talent. Knitting is a great hobby, relaxing and therapeutic plus with the added bonus for me that in the evening it keeps me out of the fridge! By the end of this book you will be ready to knit your first project, and an easy scarf pattern is included to start you off.
I'm not going to give this a rating as because I have been knitting for a couple of years much of the info is for beginners. I'm not saying I'm an expert but as I can do basic knitting it wasn't relevant. However I did read the whole book and found it easily understandable and follow-able, with good diagrams. It didn't overload with information, and was quite short. I would recommend this for a beginner.
I'm going to change my mind and rate it 4 stars, having written the review!
