I read the Saladin Ahmed run of Ms. Marvel in single issues as they came out. Nonetheless, when I saw this at my library, I decided to read it again out of nostalgia. I was not disappointed :). I had a lot of fun reading this omnibus.

One of the things that I love is how Ahmed captures the essence of Kamala (Ms. Marvel). She's selfless, caring, funny, smart, and dedicated to helping her community. We see all of these traits throughout the book. We also see her dedication to standing against injustice - not just the injustice of street crimes, but also oppression - no matter what the cost is. Indeed, she goes through a lot and it takes a toll on both her superhero life and personal life. Her struggles are very well written and I felt quite invested in her story.

Another key aspect of her character are her bonds with her friends and family. I thought that Ahmed did a great job overall with writing both. Her friends are very supportive of her, and I really enjoyed seeing her interactions with Bruno, Zoe, and Nakia. They had some great moments together and their chemistry is awesome. Their friendships play a key role in the story. While the final arc was a bit cheesy and a bit rushed, I still found it to be really sweet and I love the beauty of their bonds. Plus, I love her friendship with Amulet (Fadi), a new superhero. They have some fun and action-packed moments together.

With that said, I do have mixed views of a couple things about this. There was a conflict between Zoe and Kamala. I did see the rationale for it, and I can see where they're both coming from. But, it was a bit rushed - particularly with its resolution - and I didn't think it was fully necessary. I also had mixed feelings about Bruno and Kamala's interactions. Again, this was another case in which I can see the reasons for both of their emotions and thoughts. I also found it understandable that they both felt hesitant, given their longtime friendship and feelings for each other. At the same time, it felt like the drama was a bit too much at times and could've been cut down. I also wish that Kamala's friends played a bigger role rather than the rushed role that they played at the end.

Nevertheless, I acknowledge that it might be a bit harder to fit that in. Much of the story had focused on two things - Kamala's relationship with her parents and a new oppressive law called "Kamala's Law", which banned teenage superheroes and led to a huge crackdown.

I like how Kamala's relationship with her parents was written. They're fairly strict and protective, but also caring and supportive. The conflict and support were both written very well. Kamala's father also has a health crisis during the book and I felt moved by the story. Ahmed did a great job in showing how Kamala responded to this - and the deepening bonds between her and her parents. There was one plot point that I had mixed feelings on. It was in regards to Kamala's powers and parents' knowledge of them. I can see why it resolved the way it did, but have mixed feelings with the resolution. Still, the plot is good and the familial relationships are portrayed well also.

As for "Kamala's Law", it was part of a crossover with the Champions comics. The way that the law came about was sadly realistic. We only get to see a sliver of how oppressive the crackdown was; the Champions comics had more detail on how brutal it was and the atrocities committed. The resolution of this was a bit rushed too. This is an issue that crossovers have; a lot of details are missed.

However, there is much that I do like about the arc. I like how Kamala stands up against the atrocities and does so even though there is backlash against her. She also continues saving lives in spite of the risk of being arrested. Dum Dum Dugan was written well here too. He has a good arc. He originally goes along with this crackdown while trying to tamp down the excesses of it. But, I like how his outlook gradually changed. I like the writing of their interactions and conflict between them.

The art was great also. The colors were superb. So were the character designs and the way the action was shown.

As for the story mechanics, I thought they were solid altogether. The plot was good. There weren't info-dumps. The pacing got rushed at the end, however.

Altogether, while the book has some issues, I enjoyed it a lot. The story was good. Kamala was written well and so were her bonds with her family. The plot was good. Overall, this was a great re-read and I had fun reading it.

a comic suffering from a clear case of identity crisis. it seems to have a clear vision in its first few issues: it sets up a romantic plotline between kamala and her friend bruno, takes her to space and gives her a new costume, and(the big one) her parents know and support her superheroics! it clearly seems to progress what the character was at this point(this is my entry, idk what she's been up to before), but then it immediately falls into its overall crisis. her parents magically forget she's a superhero(but her friends don't), her and bruno waffle throughout the series, the new suit design goes awry, it feels like we never even get a really good establishment of who kamala or her supporting cast are throughout the series. they're all just there to vaguely float around kamala in ways that give them a hint of flavor while never putting them in danger of changing the status quo. and kamala is the same, as it never feels like we see her unique perspective on life or heroism beyond "i have great power, and thus great responsibility".

and SPEAKING of spider-man, the connections to the world's favorite webhead cement for me this run's lack of clear identity. this run(to my VERY in-experienced comic mind) mines NUMEROUS spider-man plots for material, while not really doing anything to adapt them well, let alone innovatively. we have a "one more day" style "ret-con" that takes kamala back to the age-old problems of hiding her secret identity, romantic and other troubles caused by hiding her super-heroics, and takes us generally back to a status quo that'd grown old. we have stormranger, the alien suit that kamala picked up in space that tries to use her powers for what IT deems right and then strikes out on its own when kamala fights against it. except there's no eddie brock. the narrative keeps saying/implying that the fight between stormranger and ms. marvel is the fight between the good and bad of kamala, but it doesn't ring very true when she's fought against it every step of the way. it's trying to pull off a spidey vs. venom storyline, but lacks the corruption(even slightly) of ms. marvel while in the suit, and a really compelling villain in stormranger, who is just a generic ai that wants to kill "threats". there's even some civil war style superhero hunting for those who didn't get enough the first (or second i guess??) time. it feels like this run is attempting to adapt spidey in a way that loses all of what made the stories great, thus not only failing to deliver a satisfying retelling of stories like the venom arc but also make this comic a shoddy graft of one hero's identity onto the other.

and that is the general issue of the series. it loves comics, does love its character, but simply doesn't make her unique or really understand her or her supporting cast well enough to give them depth. i feel that all my other problems with the issues and story(which is still enjoyable enough, for the record) can come back to this central issue. it's inescapable. what is ALSO inescapable though, is minkyu jung's INCREDIBLE art. i love the style of it, it always feels bright and interesting and full of life and detail. the colors pop, it feels engaging, i just love the look of it and how the characters and world feel. everyone is unique looking and interesting and full of detail and OUGHPOAUIFH. worth it for the art alone. the story i have qualms with(obviously), but the art is impeccable.

I really like the new hero, Amulet! He fits right in with Ms. Marvel.

I wasn't a fan of her new costume but thankfully it's not permanent, ha, guess enough people like me didn't like it that they got rid of it in the end.

Great work. Really loved this. Lots of arcs each one reaching a pretty satisfactory ending. The writer did a great job picking up where the other stories left off in growing the characters

Ma Marvel is one of my favorite hero’s and I can’t believe ai’m now (basically) caught up with her main comic series. I will say this one led me down a rabbit hole with Champions but I’m not complaining about it.
