Second String

Rate this book
Emily Roth gave her heart to Jeremy Salyer years ago. She was waiting patiently for Jeremy to return her affections while he was busy enjoying the fringe benefits of being a college football star. After a chance meeting with a swimmer named Ethan Erickson, she found herself faced with a choice between waiting for her childhood sweetheart or pursuing a new flame.

Ethan had money to burn and a bucket list that was begging for his attention. His sights were set on Olympic gold, and a relationship would only serve to slow him down. Emily's offer to be friends with benefits was just what he was looking for, until he realized it meant he'd have to compete for her attention.

Can Ethan convince Emily he's the only man she needs?
More importantly, is he capable of being that man?

I received a copy for an honest review:

I dont actually know what to say. I loved the previous books. But this one just fell a bit flat for me.

There was just no connection for me. I loved Ethan, what's not to love, gorgeous swimming body, rich to boot, what's not love! Emily annoyed me. That is why I gave it two stars.
She really liked Ethan but she convinced herself she was inlove with Jeremy since they were kids and he was her perfect man. Even though Ethan was the guy she was attracted to and wanted to be with.

Everything was going great for them and then after don't know how many years Jeremy appears and says he's ready now. Seriously! I don't think so! Who waits around for a guy who you think is your dreamguy but knows he's busy sleeping with other girls, and then finally decides oh he's ready now.
And then she leaves Ethan just like that to see if things will work out with her and Jeremy.

From the minute I met Jeremy he seemed like a serious 'idget'...lol

Eventually she decides okay she wants Ethan and poor Ethan just keeps waiting on the side for her to make up her mind.

I just found it a bit boring there was no drama and you know how we like drama. No Spark for me :-(

So this didn't work me!

Sorry if I'm rambling but that's my thoughts

I will want to read the next book, cause I want to read Josh and Brit's story!

This was an okay story, but the male lead (Ethan) was so full of himself it wasn’t funny.

The characters in this book did not endear themselves to me. Emily was so clueless she didn’t know what an orgasm was, and Ethan seemed to think that he was God’s gift to women!

The storyline in this irritated me a bit. 181 miles IS a long way to drive to hit on someone, a guy’s pocket is not all that far away from his manly bits, especially if he’s excited, having sex with another girl whilst in the early stages of a relationship with someone else does count as cheating, and going nuts because a girl goes to a party without you is not attractive. I mean are all the men in this series possessive, arrogant, controlling jerks? Because so far I am noticing a pattern.
The end to this was okay, but I was just glad to be finished. We were then left with a bit of a teaser about who the next book will be about, and I really hope that Josh is not as bad.
Overall; okay,

This was another dull read.

So far, i haven't liked any of the characters in this series.
The female main characters can be annoying, quite stupid, and just generally unlikable. The male main characters are a lot worse. They all think a lot of themselves, they're all possessive, and they're all slightly crazy.
Ethan has defiantly been the worst one so far!

Overall, Dull, and had another pair of bad characters.
I'm just glad these aren't too long!

Second string is the third book in the In Too Deep series from Casey McMillin and is Emily and Ethan story two characters who we had met briefly before in the series. I was looking forward to reading this one.

Emily is now a Lakers girl and has moved to LA where she reconnects with Ethan. There is chemistry between the two, but both have reason for taking thing further, Emily is in love with Jeremy or so she thinks, and Ethan doesn’t do relationships flings yes! Relationship No! He’s all about his swimming, or so he thinks.

“My inability to resist him was exactly the reason I couldn’t be around him”

“She was a really fun person to be around. I was in trouble”

I liked the storyline; it was entertaining easy read that was low on the drama and angst. It may seem like there is a love triangle, but there really isn’t. I liked Emily and Ethan; their friendship/ relationship was sweet and funny. Although there were times that I wanted to bang their head together. I have to say more so Emily, she really didn’t know what she wanted, Sexy Ethan or Jeremy the idiot! (In my opinion anyway) at times, I was thinking what are you doing? You know you want Ethan. LOL

“Ethan has somehow weaseled his way into my brain, and I’m having trouble making myself stop thinking about him”

The story is fast moving, and at times I wanted it to slow down so that we could get more Emily, and Ethan time, maybe a few flashbacks to the first time they met. As there is two more books in the series to go I’m hoping that we will see a little more of theses two.

Overall although Second String, it wasn’t my favorite of the series so far, it was still an enjoyable read. Love that the rest of the gang at in the book so we get to see how things are with them, I like the close friendship that they all share. In true Casey McMillan style, you’re not left with a cliffhanger, but just knowing that there is more to come.

If you like quick, easy drama free romantic books then this book is for you. It can be read as a standalone, but I do think you should read the books in order as although they are about different couples they continue on from the last book, also get the background knowledge of some of the other secondary characters.

With that in mind, I’m off to read the next book in the series Mind The Gap Britt and Josh’s story.

So It said standalone but I definitely needed to read the first two maybe it would've made a little more sense to me.

Anyway, Emily and Ethan met on a previous book, when she was hired to entertain a bachelor party because she was a Vegas show girl. But now since Grechen got preggers (also in another book) Emily moved to LA to become a Lakers girl and take her spot. Thats where her and Ethan reconnect on Christmas and like start hanging out but she has this star football quarterback ex-boyfriend who she lets do whatever he wants while he;s in college with whoever he wants while she patiently waits for him… So then her and Ethan start hanging out more, kinda, they go weeks without seeing each other most of the time, but she really starts to like him then BAM Jeremy comes into the picture wanting her back so she drops Ethan for him …

I was just confused. The writing was a little different then I'm used to and the interchanging stories weren't really a problem for me it was more so that fact that I have NO CLUE how old anyone is besides Emily. Who says she's 19 then tens 20, but like how old is everyone else, I know they're all out of college, Josh was married and divorced already like I'm confuse. Maybe she said it in a previous book I just have no clue, and I know Jeremy's in his first year of med school so what like 22?

Also what happens with her parents, it was like this big thing that she never talks to them cause her sister died in a car crash. Then when she gets back with Jeremy her and her mom talk for like a day then nothing, we never hear from them again.

And my biggest issue was the book just ends, like wait, I feel like I missed a huge chunk of story. The story moved so quickly and didn't really show their actually relationship, we read a paragraph explaining how they went to dinner and then kissed and he left, We never read them actually do anything, like the one and only date he took her on we didn't see it from them but read it in like two paragraphs. I definitely think the book should've been longer and more about them as a couple, I didn't' connect to them at all.

It was a good book though I liked the idea I just wish there was a little more to it!

When Emily was in high school, she met a boy and gave him her heart. They agreed to move on to other people and experience life with the understanding that they would eventually end up together. While she is waiting for her life with Jeremy, Emily meets Ethan and feels a strong pull to him. But, she is convinced all will be ok as Ethan doesn't do relationships...he always keeps things casual.

From the moment Ethan meets Emily, he can tell she is different. She makes him feel things he has never felt before and he finds himself doing things he thought he would never do. Just as he and Emily are getting together, Jeremy shows up asking Emily for a real shot.

Now Emily has to choose between what she thought she always wanted and the unknown her heart desires.

This is the 3rd book in this series and although it can stand alone, it is helpful to read the other books before this one. I really wanted to like this one after liking the first book and loving the second but I was left feeling like something was missing with this one.

I never really felt the passion with these two and their relationship feels awkward right from the start. Jeremy is introduced and supposedly Emily has this great love for him, but he is in and out of the book quickly. Would have liked to see a little more effort on his part.

My thoughts:

Character development: 3.5
Level of Romance between characters: 3.5
Passion/Heat level: 3(not a lot of passion, there are only a couple of scenes and they are PG-13 at best)
Angst/Heartbreak: 3(some obstacles but nothing like the other couples)
Cliffhanger?: Not really a cliffhanger per say but it just kind of ends

Overall, I was disappointed. I think this one had great potential but missed the mark. I will keep reading the series though cause I want to see what happens next.

I was so excited when I got an e-mail tonight from the author about the release tomorrow and even better than that she sent me the book! Although this author did send my the book the review is my honest opinion of the story.

And let me tell you it did not disappoint. So the focus in this book was on Emily and Ethan while of course keeping in touch with the characters from the first two books.

Emily and Ethan share a strong attraction to each other but are determined to keep things casual as Ethan is a well known ladies man and Emily is waiting for her high school sweetheart to get his act together and finally be with her the way she has always dreamed of.

Although they live hours apart they seem to find any reason to be near each other and can't seem to fight the chemistry between them. Ethan and Emily are both a little guarded as they are heading into unfamiliar territory but can't seem to help themselves. At least not until the past threatens to ruin everything.

I also felt a little bit more connected to this story as I could relate to Emily's struggle to figure out who she truly is now compared to the vision she had of herself growing up.

Whew! Overall I loooved this story! I was a little skeptical because again I just wanted more from the previous books but Ethan and Emily hooked me in just as much as Rachel and Gretchen, I was so sad when it ended I just wanted a little bit more.

At the end it did suggest a fourth book was coming our way. I don't know any details but if i had to guess I would probably say it will be about Josh (Ethan's roommate) but who knows!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

While this could be read as a standalone, I am glad that the author offered to send me the first two books if I had not read them yet. I read the three books in this series over the course of two days, and each book was fantastic. The characters from the first two books are involved in this story so having the background knowledge from them I believe helps everything make more sense.

Emily and Ethan originally meet in book one though not a lot of detail is given to what occurred between them. In this book you find out that they spent the night together, but did not have sex. Ethan is a player and not looking for a commitment, and Emily is waiting for a guy named Jeremy that she was involved with years before to be ready to be in a relationship with her again. Of course just when things start to really heat up between the two of them Jeremy comes back into her life leaving Emily to decide who she wants to be with. Should she choose the guy she has been waiting for for so long or the guy that has slowly found his way into her heart?

One of my many favorite parts of this book was how at the beginning when Ethan found out Emily was in LA with his friends he got in his car and drive many miles to see her. Even though they were both clearly attracted to one another, I liked how their relationship did not develop quickly over night. I loved Ethan, and the private dance he gave Emily was so hot! I plan to read the next book very soon and am looking forward to an update on the two of them. I definitely recommend this series, but I would highly suggest starting at book one and reading it in order.

'Second String' is a fun, quick read that any fan of sports and romance would love, even though it can be read as a stand-alone, as I read it, I regret doing that and wish I read the first two to gain more insight into these characters and also the secondary characters.

Emily and Ethan have met before and this book is their story, Emily is torn between her attraction to swimmer Ethan and her best friend's brother, Jeremy, who is now ready for a relationship which is exactly what Emily wants. Who does Emily chose?

The whole premise of the novel makes me eye-roll, Emily is a national cheerleader who is torn between Football quarterback and an Olympic Swimmer. Really? The novel involves so much sport, bit unnecessary to be honest with you, it would have been fine if one of the guys was an athlete or Emily was.
I definitely couldn't relate to the characters, I didn't like Emily as I thought she was a bit crazy, annoying and bloody frustrating. I didn't really like Jeremy or Ethan either to be honest, I think this is the first book I've read where I've disliked the hero AND the heroine! I just couldn't connect to them, I didn't empathise with them. I don't know whether that was due to characterisation or just their personalities and because of that I found myself not caring about Emily and Ethan's relationship.

All in all, a cute romance for any romance readers who love their sporty hero/heroines, would definitely recommend reading the first two as well!

I must start by saying that I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. I hadn't read the authors previous books but didn't feel I was too lost in the story without them which I liked. It did, in fact, make an instant buyer for the first two novels because I wanted to know Collin/Rachel and Gretchen/Josh relationship history. The characters seemed very well rounded and stable throughout the book. Ethan, a handsome trust fund baby, is going for Olympic gold in swimming. Although we don't know if he ever made it it really didn't matter since it was a "job" and not a huge part of his makeup. He was pegged as the playboy with charms to woo any woman and he proved charming enough to me as a reader. So much so that I had to stop and wonder if he was a real person! Oh how I wish he was! Emily is a young, straight-laced dancer from humble living standards that shows she has a good heart and witty personality. Still in love with her high school sweetheart (a dumb jock still immature in the ways of love), Emily tries to choose between the two men. I really enjoyed this book and couldn't stop laughing. The author wrote both characters SO well and stayed true to their personalities. I loved it and recommend it to people who love a good, witty romance. Deeply satisfying easy read!

I have read the first three books in the "in too deep" series so by the time I was finished with the first two, I was interested to read about Emily and Ethan's story. My opinion is that you need to read the first two before you read this one. All books are a continuation from the last one, so you may be a tad confused or feel like you missed something. It was an enjoyable read for me and I love the story of Ethan and Emily, I just found myself wanting more.
Emily and Ethan met in Las Vegas in "Three Years Later" . I would have loved to have a few flashbacks of their time in Las Vegas when they met. Emily is still holding on to her hometown crush Jeremy and believes she will eventually marry him, since she always felt that way growing up. But then she meets Ethan and discovers he is more than Jeremy ever has been and ever will be to her, but is she ready to give up Jeremy for good? And will Ethan be willing to stick around as she figure things out? This sounds like a love triangle but to me, it lacked the necessary components of a love triangle, for Jeremy wasn't really present enough and he obviously wasn't very likable.
I recommend this to anyone who likes quick and light romances and doesn't mind reading a series. This is an stand alone for each story is about a different couple, but I do think all books should be read from beginning to end.

Ethan is big playboy, never committing to a relationship, but when he hears that Emily, who he met in Vegas, is spending Christmas with his friends the first thing he does is jump in his car and drive 3 hours to see her. Book 3 takes place right where book 2 leaves off and there is definitely a lot of heat and passion between Emily and Ethan. The only problem is Emily thinks she is in love with someone else. It is clear to me that the author has progressed when writing these stories. One of my biggest complaints about book 1 was the lack of detail, but in book 3 I thought the author did a good job of adding detail. Ethan can come off a huge jerk at parts of this story but it is also clear that he is trying to change that. I like Emily even though she is way innocent in everything that she does and it was kind of funny to read about her innocence. That being said I really enjoyed reading this story and I am going to assume that the fourth book will be Josh’s story, which will be fun. I look forward to reading more about these characters and I hope that we will get to see the boys to trials and hopefully the Olympics too, I feel invested in their progress even though that is not the complete main story line of a lot of these books. I recommend this to fans of New Adult look for a cutesy romance that has a little humor in it as well.

I liked it, however Emily is a bit naive ... I mean Jeremy who never call or write her and he suddenly appears? Who cares?

Emily Roth gave her heart to Jeremy Salyer years ago. She was waiting patiently for Jeremy to return her affections while he was busy enjoying the fringe benefits of being a college football star.

So Emily and Ethan... they met with each other in the first book , and now they have the oportunity to see each other again.

Ethan had money to burn and a bucket list that was begging for his attention. His sights were set on Olympic gold, and a relationship would only serve to slow him down.

Ethan lives in San Diego and Emily in Los Angeles but they try to see each other as many times as possible. The attraction between the two become stronger , Emily holds back because she has an old boyfriend (Jeremy) who promised her to come back...

And now after years(!!!) Jeremy came back and she has to choose...

Can Ethan convince Emily he's the only man she needs?
More importantly, is he capable of being that man?

Well you should read it to find the answer. :)

The author offered to send me the first two books in the series as well and I am so glad she did, this can be read as a stand alone, but I got so much more from this one because I had read the previous books in the series. There was very little background on the main characters, Emily and Ethan, but I felt like the author did a great job of getting the reader to connect with the characters, I loved them both by the end. I enjoyed reading about the innocence of Emily in contrast to how she was described in the first book, a Vegas Showgirl. I assumed all looks no brain, but the author really gives us a sweet picture of her and I loved her. I like that she sticks to some basic values and morals despite being presented with a gorgeous guy. I haven't read a lot of other books lately where a character's background surprised me and I really loved the journey and triangle with the childhood love!! By the end I really did want to see more of their story and I hope I get some glimpses in the last books in the series. Looking forward to reading those. I enjoyed these characters and this world and I really think you will too, sweet and a bit sexy and fun!! Go get this one and have fun reading!!

Ethan is a fun-loving flirt when he meets Emily in Las Vegas. They connect one night but never expect to see each other again until Emily runs into his friends in Los Angeles. She is new to the area and they take her in as a new member of the group. Ethan and Emily are so good together and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. I did not like Emily's hang-up on her old boyfriend Jeremy. Her reluctance to commit to Ethan made no sense to me.

Second String is the third book in the In Too Deep series. It follows a tight knit group of male friends who met while swimming in college. The series follows them and their friends as they move on from college and fall in love. The swimming story line was new for me and I really enjoyed it. The books are very entertaining and a fairly easy read. I definitely recommend reading them in order because they move directly from book to book. I was actually a little confused when I started with Second String first.

Casey McMillin was a new author for me and I'm really happy I found this series. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys chick lit and romance.

This book had a lot of potential but here is the main reason that I gave it a 3 instead of 4.

The characters were not relatable.

I'm sorry but having an ex-Las Vegas Showgirl turned Laker girl as your main heroine is REALLY hard to relate to.

Not to mention the fact that she is torn between an Olympic swimmer and a College Football Start Quarterback.

I mean, come on!!

Yes, I didn't read the first two books in the series but I really didn't need to. I'm sure they both had the same sort of lackluster writing as this one did.

This book was won on a goodreads' giveaway, so I had not read the first two books in the series. I really wish I had prior to reading this one. However, you can read this book without having read the two prior to it. I just would have liked to have the background of some of the other characters going into this novel. I loved the interaction between the two main characters. Their chemistry was bouncing off the pages. I enjoyed the banter between them. I would have liked to have seen a little more conflict between Jeremy and Ethan, but I don't know if that might have made the story drag into unnecessary places. I would also like to know if Collin and Ethan make the Olympics, maybe that will be another book. Overall, this is a great book and I am going to go back and read books one and two in the set now.

So this book is the third in the series but it says it’s a stand-alone novel. I haven’t read the first two and when the book started off I was completely lost. I felt like I somehow skipped a few chapters. I hadn’t. I recommend reading the first two books first. The main characters in this book met in one of the others. I wish that would have been included in this story too.

Emily is a showgirl turned Laker girl and Ethan is a swimmer. It took me a little to warm up to the characters and I eventually did (once I put all the piece together that I had missed in other books). I enjoyed the story. I would have liked to see their relationship develop a little more though. It just kind of ended. I wanted more of a happily ever after.

The author was kind enough to send me the first two books to read before I read Second String. The characters in the story was very mature and motivated for their ages. Ethan is my favorite character in the series so far with Grethen coming in second place. Ethan comes from a wealthy family but does not show it but he does consider himself a ladies man until he meets Emily. Emily is the first girl not to fall for his charms which seems to confuse him. Still in love or she thinks she is in love with her high school sweetheart who is off away at college. Eventually, she realizes that she loves Ethan and decides to give a relationship with him a chance. I really enjoyed reading this book and I just finished reading Book 4 and will be reading Book 5 soon.

I'm not really sure what to say about this book. I liked ok but it didn't wow me. I got really annoyed with the female lead, Emily. I understand she was only 19 but she acted a lot younger. And actually Ethan didn't wow me either. I didn't dislike him but there wasn't anything different about him than any other man-whore I've read before. I wish there would have been more to their story. I didn't really understand why they felt the way they did when there wasn't much interaction. It would have been nice to see more of how they met. I remember it was mentioned that Ethan was with a Vegas showgirl in the first book but that was it. I would probably read the next book in the series to see what happens with Josh and Brit.

Choices are hard to make when you like both options

Second String is the third book in the In Too Deep series. After meeting when in Vegas, they hung out and talked all night. Nothing much more happened and they loose touch. To everyones surprise when they got tickets to the Lakers, they recognized one of the Laker Girls. Emily had moved to L.A. and had been lucky enough to get the chance to become a Laker Girl. Once Ethan heard the group was hanging out with Emily this caught his attention.
Once Emily and Ethan started hanging out, her long time love interest comes back into the picture and lays claim on Emily. Now being caught in the middle of what she's always wanted and what is making her live more than ever she needs to make a choice. But she is not sure what is the right choice to make.

I really enjoyed this series. You definitely want to start from the beginning with book one so you get the character development, as they do appear in every book.

Who doesn't love a good love triangle? Should Emily hold out and wait for Jeremy to decide he wants to move forward in their relationship (NOT!) or, continue to explore what she and Ethan feel for each other?! No brainer if you ask me!!

I would have liked the book to be a bit longer. Also, in my head I pictured the ending differently, but, I still thought it was worth the read and would recommend the series. It was more vanilla then I usually read, but enjoyable. I will read the next book in the series.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read and review.

This was a quick easy read for me. You probably do need to have read books one and two first so you know more backstory of all the characters. I did find Emily to be more whiny than I liked - she came across as younger than nineteen. The story's premise was good, but the execution seemed a bit flat at times. I liked Ethan, but Emily's indecisiveness over whether she was going to wait endlessly for Jeremy or the guy that was here and now, Ethan was grating.

OK, so i gave it one star, i think it is obvious i wasn't a fan. I enjoyed the first and thought the second was ok but this one i couldn't read. I thought the book was too fictional. I had a hard time believing the characters and getting in their heads. When I read I like to picture the book as if it were me or even a movie. But this book i was unable to do this. I am not a fan of saying 'do not read' so i will say read with caution. Read the first book to get familiar with the characters. If you like it then move to the second and so fourth.

Happy Reading :)

HOLY HOTT DAYUMM!
I love this book! Heck...I love this series!
Ethan is definitely my favorite character so far! Love love love..oh yeah I love him! He is known as a ladies man and proud of it. Emily is the first girl not to fall for his charms which seems to confuse him. He likes her, but she likes another? Whoa..wait what?!?! Yep, you best believe there is drama. But, it’s obvious who she really wants to be with.
You know what? Just read it! This book is amazing! Can’t wait to read the next books in the series!

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I really liked Emily and Ethan but I just could connect with them as much as the other characters in previous books. Ethan is a playboy who is not the typical playboy that would think would recognize that he found the one and I will hold off on other girls. Emily is hung up on a boyfriend from high school that just seems like an ass that hasn't called or stayed in touch but shows up one day and had expected her to fall at his footsteps.

Ethan I loved him right off he's a funny guy, "what? I felt your butt for two hours straight when you sat on my lap earlier." He's honest, "screw that. I can't stop thinking about you. I want to be inside you again. I didn't get my fill." I wouldn't call this a love triangle per say but Emily is torn between Ethan and this football jock who just needs to get a life and stop stringing people along. Did I mention to much in my last sentence? I didn't mean too but that character upset me.

such an amazing follow up to the previous two stories. Casey does a great job sharing Emily and Ethan's story will keeping us up to date with Rachel and Collin and the rest of the gang. I am already recommending the book and the series it is worth it. I loved this book, her other two and am looking forward to reading the next one!
