Love Games #2

Toeing The Line

Rate this book
Zane’s time in the Air Force doing electronic surveillance has taught him a thing or two about keeping secrets. But when his best friend, Riley, finds out what he’s kept from her, their “friends with benefits” relationship won’t be what threatens their growing feelings for each other. You’ll want to read this hot, sexy romance over and over again! Allyson Lindt presents Book 2 of her Bits & Bytes series, Toeing the Line.

Riley tends to fall hard and fast for the guys she dates, and it never ends with the wedding bells she expects. Tired of the heartbreak and unsure if she even knows what love is, she swears off unreliable things like dating and trying to find that elusive happily-ever-after spark. Focusing on her art seems like the perfect distraction, except she’s missing the physical side of being half a couple. Fortunately, her best friend, Zane, is happy to model for her drawings and tie her up in the bedroom with no expectations.

Zane’s granddad raised him with the belief that people who bring joy to the world should be protected at all costs. For Zane, his best friend Riley is one of those people, and he definitely doesn't mind when making her happy involves helping her pursue her creative dream and some sport sex with a hint of kink. They can have fun, and he can keep her from falling for the next idiot who comes along while she searches for her Prince Charming.

Regardless of her resolution, as things heat up between them, Riley finds herself falling again. She needs to decide if she’s in love with the idea of being in love, or if—despite Zane’s insistence that she deserves someone better—what she feels for him is the real thing. If she can’t learn to trust her heart and convince Zane he’s exactly what she needs, it will obliterate a lifelong friendship.

I was provided a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Another wonderful 4.5 star read from the talented Allyson Lindt. I am really enjoying this series - she is one of the authors slowly turning me into a CR fan.

When I first met Riley in "Conflict of Interest" (Bits & Bytes #1), which was Kenzie and Scott's book, I really didn't like her that much. I found her to be flighty and somewhat insincere. By the end of the book I started to like her and I realized, when I was thinking about why my feelings for her had changed, that what we saw of Riley we saw through Kenzie's eyes. As the relationship between the sisters began to change to one of tolerance and support instead of being adversarial and/or disapproving, Kenzie's view of Riley changed. To me, this is the mark of good authors - you are so connected to and invested in their characters that when their opinion of someone changes yours does as well.

Toeing the Line is book #2 (but the actual third book) in the Bits & Bytes series. This book follows Riley, Kenzie's twin, and her BFF Zane who has just returned home from a stint in the Army. These two have been best friends since high school and have always been there for each other to pick up the pieces when one romance or another, for either of them, does not work out.

Their reunion is a little awkward at first. The tone of their relationship had changed while he was overseas and they were communicating online. As well, they had not had much contact with each other in the last two years due to his posting/assignment. Now that Zane is home long-term, he and Riley try and pick up where they left off. Zane wants to step in and protect Riley from herself and the world in general and Riley misses the other comforts of being in a relationship with a man so they decide to become "friends with benefits" or as the blurb puts it, they are engaging in "some sport sex with a hint of kink."

Of course this isn't going to stop either of them from continuing to search for their "Prince/Princess Charming" - that one perfect person that makes them feel whatever it is you are supposed to feel when you are in love with someone. But what happens when two best friends become even more to each other? Can they possibly already be what they have been searching for? How do you know when love is LOVE? What happens to friendship when friends become lovers?

In this book Allyson tackles the difficult concept of transitioning friends to lovers to a hopefully successful, actual couple. She manages to sidestep all the cliché misunderstandings and silly moments where you just want to headslap the characters by staying true to them and their friendship with each other. Yes, there are moments when one does something incredibly stupid and hurts the other but it is an honest stupid mistake - something one thought the other would like or want - and not a contrived misunderstanding that causes the issue. And when others lie to them to try and separate them - well read the book to see just how funny and insane and unique and inspired these two really are.

I can't wait to see who is next.... *hehe I actually know but I'm not telling!*

Great love story, especially one that starts off as friends in high school and find love together later in life. Having 2 men as best friends is already a challenge but when you add romance into it, it can break you.

Normally general romance stories only pull a 3 star review from me, because most are so typical and it seems you’re reading the same story over and over but with different characters. Toeing the Line was different for me in the aspect that yes it was a typical love story but Allyson made the characters so likeable that you can’t help as a reader to become so involved with the outcome. I really wanted to see a happy outcome between these two characters and found myself while reading this wanting to yell “what’s wrong with you!”.

For those looking for a more realistic love story with a bit of sizzle, you’ve found it.

I really look forward to reading more from Allyson. Enjoy!

Blurb:
They toed a line while he was deployed. Flirting. Dirty-Talk. Mutual self-gratification. Nothing was off limits. Now he's back, and these best friends have to figure out where they stand.

Riley falls hard and fast for the guys she dates, and it never ends with the wedding bells she expects. Tired of the heartbreak and unsure she even knows what love is, she swears off unreliable things like dating and trying to find that elusive happily-ever-after spark.

Which is great, except she misses the physical part of being half a couple. Fortunately, now her best friend, Zane, is back from his military deployment, he offers to tie her up in the bedroom with no expectations.

Zane's holding something back, and Riley sees how much the secret haunts him. If she can't help him overcome his demons, their friendship and their no-strings playtime may not survive.

I hate to say this, but, unfortunately, I didn't like this book. I just didn't really care for the heroine, who I thought have a tendency to make herself out as the victim when she carried some (honestly, most) of the blame for the situations she was in as well. I didn't like her at all and I felt no sympathy for her.
And, while I thought the hero was sweet and all, I didn't get why he put up with the heroine. She wasn't very nice. He always defended her, which is great in a relationship, but she was often in the wrong when he did, so I didn't appreciate it as much.
I didn't connect to any of the other characters, either, and I wasn't really invested in the story.
Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. I know others have liked this book, so maybe you will, but I won't be the person to recommend it.

Toeing The Line was a heartwarming story full of steam, friendships and love.

Riley and Zane were characters that alternately made me fall in love and want to hit them for being so thickheaded and thinking so less of themselves.

It was heartwarming to watch Zane and Riley fight their demons and keep fighting for their friendship. It was also very frustrating to know that they're in love with each other and being unable to tell the other.

So all in all, Toeing The Line was the kinda book that brings out the rawest emotions in you.

Allyson Lindt's "Toeing the Line" is a great read. Zane and Riley have such an amazing chemistry! So many hot, hot scenes. I love their phone sex history! Reminds me of a relationship I had once. As always with Allyson, this is an amazing read. I am trying my best to read everything she has written!

I wish I'd read this series in order. it wasn't necessary but I think I would have appreciated reading them chronologically.
I really enjoyed this book. Riley is written as kind of a flake from so many other people's perspective it's really nice to see who she actually is and watching Zane figure out how to love her (and himself) was rewarding.

I received a copy of Toeing the Line for an honest review.

Riley and Zane have been best friends forever. When Zane was deployed for six years they did everything they could to remain in touch. However some things became out of hand when their messages become more and more intimate. Now two years of no contact Zane is finally home and ready for things to get back to normal. Except they aren’t because now they’re both attracted to each other and no matter what the other does they can’t seem to get over what happened in their private conversations. When Riley proposes no strings attached sex they both think it’s a great idea until both of them begin to get feelings for one another. Now both Zane and Riley must decide if they want to take the leap of sharing their feelings and risk losing their best friend forever.

The Sexy Time:
I was really looking forward to seeing how the two characters you know bow chika wow wowed. However, I found the interactions a tad dull. While both Riley and Zane claimed it was “the best sex they ever had” I found it rather lacking in the sexy factor. I felt there was too much thinking and technical terms like: “Crinkle of cellophane” when talking about a condom and that made the whole experience seem a tad unrealistic.

Friendship to Love:
We’ve all read about best friends falling in love with each other right? I’ve read a bunch and while Zane and Riley are friends they have always liked each other more than friends. While they’re comfortable around each other they both harbored feelings for each other since the beginning and that shaped their friendship. While Zane was gone and when he returns their friendship I think is looked at more for what it is: a way for them to spend time with each other. It’s very obvious from the beginning they will end up with each other and I thought they made a good couple so that was a plus.

Insecurities:
Riley is insecure about a lot of things such as her art work. She wants to draw comics and throughout the entire book is scared to do so. Riley also is insecure about love because every time she’s with a guy she doesn’t love them love them likes she thinks she should.
Zane has insecurities about being good enough for Riley as a friend and as a lover. He’s always thought she was too good for him and I think that made him a sweet character to read about.

After Reading:
I felt Toeing the line was an ok story. The plot while over done if done correctly can be amazing Toeing the Line fell short for me. I did enjoy the characters somewhat although they did get a tad annoying at times they weren’t all that bad. I also thought the sexy scenes were a bit…I don’t know nothing special I guess. I wish I could have loved this story but I just didn’t. The upsides were it’s a great short read and I had no difficulty reading it.

Full review and giveaway available at A Lust For Reading. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I love that the books in Allyson Lindt's Bits & Bytes series all feature geeky but hot heroes and heroines. I have read a ton of books, literally, over the past two years and this is the first time I have come across heroes like this and its a nice change. Zane is an awesome hacker who was then recruited by the government to work for the Air Force. After doing that for five years, he has returned home and is trying to figure out what to do for work. Riley, his best friend since high school, works in the insurance industry but also is an artist who draws graphic novels. She tends to dive in head first into relationships only to discover down the road it wasn't right. The problem is, she doesn't know what she is looking for and thinks maybe she doesn't truly know what love feels like. On the other hand, Zane isn't looking for a romantic relationship at all.

Zane adores Riley but knows he is not good enough for her and needs her as his friend. Riley is done with looking for love, but misses being part of a couple. Picking up on where their few rounds of cyber and phone sex left off during Zane's deployment, their best friends status quickly shifts to best friends with benefits. Can they both enjoy the new physical aspects of their relationship without falling for each other? Or will sex ultimately ruin their friendship?

Riley wasn't my favorite person at the beginning of this book based on the quick glimpse I got of her in book one, Conflict of Interest. However, I quickly warmed up to her. Yes she is a bit flaky when it comes to relationships, but once I got to learn more about her relationship with Zane, I understood why. Zane is smart and sexy and stubborn as hell. His opinion that he wasn't good enough for Riley was so frustrating and I wanted to go back in time and smack the person who put that idea into his head.

This was a fun book that was perfect for a summer afternoon. I actually read Conflict of Interest and Toeing the Line back to back within 24 hours of each other and enjoyed them both very much. The characters are very real and I was able to really relate to them. I am so glad that I discovered Allyson Lindt's books and I hope there will be more in this series in the near future. I love hot geeks!

I absolutely love the friends to lover's concept in a romance book and let me tell you Allyson Lindt DOES NOT disappoint!

Toeing the Line begins with a intimate conversation between to two main character's Zane (YUM!) and Riley. You find out that Zane is stationed in the military but makes sure he stays in contact with his best friend Riley as much as possible. Now that there conversations have become intimate there relationship has changed and they both become very confused. But this all changes once Zane isn't able to have any contact with Riley for over two-years. His jobs changes and he is off the grid from all communication. This is where the book really begins. Zane has finally returned and you get to see them meet up again and figure out where their relationship stands. After the way they had been chatting, do they go back to the way they were....Just friends???? Friends with Benefits maybe...??? More??? Well you have to read I don't want to give the whole story away!

The characters in this story I just loved. You can really feel how much Zane adores Riley. It makes you sad that he doesn't feel like he is good enough for her. You want to yell at him at times especially when he doubts what they are both obviously feeling. Riley has had some pretty awful luck when it comes to men in the past and she feels like Zane came back at the perfect time. She doesn't want a relationship and thinks that there "Arrangement" is all that she will need. No feelings need to get involved. Well let's just say feelings were definitely part of this arrangement. You could feel how much these two wanted to be more but were just too scared.

I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. The length was perfect! I didn't feel like it was drawn out too much. I loved the characters! I really felt the love and history between the two. I definitely recommend this to romance lovers out there. You will not be disappointed with this fun and easy read!

I give this story 5 stars!!

Oh I love these books. Ms. Lindt captures a world of game players, comic nerds, cosplay, and computer geeks and turns them sexy.
I enjoy every book she writes and can't wait to read the next one. This book is no different hot sex, sex inner nerds with a day job and wanting to do the one thing they dreamed of doing since childhood. Her comics, him hacking a challenge. This book is a complete delight and I look forward to reading more from this author and she is now a favorite I watch for the next book.

InvaderZ: Well, not all the time. But you’ve made an appearance in the mental rotation. Just because you’re my best friend doesn’t mean I’ve never noticed how drop-dead sexy you look in cutoffs. Or a bikini. Or one of my T-shirts and nothing else. Wait, that one was all in my head.

CharcoalDreams: You know this is getting awkward, right?

Zane A computer hacker as a teen in love with his best girl friend and not acting on it. After joining the Air force and doing what he loves how will going back to the real world. When he and Riley take there Friend ship to Friends with Benefits. Can their friendship survive?

Riley is tired of being known as flaky and can't wait to have Zane back. She is bossy and knows what she wants but puts off the next step in everything til Zane over step there friend ship and does something behind her back that can destroy it all. Can they get past what she sees as a betrayal?

Can they figure out life and how Toeing the Line between will work?

But he wasn’t a long-term kind of guy. Something his grandfather had been right about. Riley deserved her Prince Charming—the guy who would give her everything and let her be anything—and that wasn’t him.

Originally published at Rookie Romance.

I love books when best friends realise that they love each other as more than friends, it fills me with warm fuzzies. But this book did not give me the warm fuzzies. It was okay, but I never felt that I really connected with the characters, so I felt kind of detached from it.

I found Riley to be a bit on the irritating side, and her emotions were quite changable. I also found it annoying that she would get huffy with Zane if he wasn't particularly forthcoming about how he felt about her, when she wasn't either. The poor guy was confused by her for most of the book, and I was right there with him.
Zane was sweet but he was a total pushover when it came to Riley, and I never really understood why. Honestly, I didn't love him either, but he was probably my favourite character.

This is a quick read, with a good pace. What was an interesting storyline just fell a little flat for me. I spent most of the book just urging them to actually talk to each other. It would have solved their 'conflicts' a lot sooner.
This wasn't really for me, because I didn't connect with the characters much and that's a big factor for me to enjoy a book properly.

I love stories where best friends turn into more.

Not sure how I felt about Riley. As confused as she was at times, is how confused I was about her. I did not hate her, but at times, I was not sure how I felt about Zane and her being together. I was worried sometimes about the way things were going in their relationship. Zane, I liked him a lot. He was a great friend. I felt bad for him at times when he spoke to the truth to Riley, but she seemed to get so upset.
The plot was at a good pace that allowed the characters to grow into the romantic relationship. Riley and Zane have known each other for a long time, but Zane had been absent from Riley’s life for 2 years when he was in the military. They flirted and acted sometimes early with the whole “friends with benefits” but grew to something so much more.
Even though I enjoyed the book, I just needed a little bit more. The story was there but some parts just fell short for me. I felt, at times, Riley had a little pity party.

Sexy story of old friends who attempt to be more. I love these stories.

Zane was in the Air Force for six years. He and Riley have been best friends for years. While away they had phone sex. Now that he's back they decide to be friends with benefits. But something happened while he was gone and he's keeping secrets from Riley. He pushes her away thinking he's not good enough for her. But she keeps trying until she finally gives up. He finally admits to her that he loves her but could be be too late?
Hot sex. Two best friends who are in love with each other but afraid to take a risk. A crazy ex who happens to be CIA. Did I mention hot sex?

Toeing the Line is the complete series and my first book by this author. There were many worlds captured in this book such as game players, comic lovers, and computer geeks and Lindt makes them sexy. This book follows Zane and Riley. When you are first introduced, they are best friends. Can guys and girls be best friends without things getting complicated? These two Toe the Line with friends and more. Can they do the friends with benefits thing or will someone get hurt? I really loved this book and would recommend it to any and all Contemporary Romance readers!

Hot romance with very real characters. We can all identify with Riley and Zane as they pursue new careers and change the landscape of their long term friendship. Particular kudos to Lindt for making Riley's pursuit of her art so realistic. Who can't relate to the pain of rejection?

And did I mention the sex scenes are hot? Too spicy to read on public transport without a window open for sure!

Starts with sexting between two friends and then jumps forward several years. They learn how to be together in real life despite the things they've done in the meantime. They also learn to trust each other and how to support each other while still respecting the other to make the right choice.
