I found this book when researching texts that discuss differently abled people. It appeared on Barnes & Noble's website. While it did not have any reviews, I decided to check it out. I ordered a copy to read with my students for Rock Your Socks Day (March 21). I immediately knew this was a special book that must be shared. I think the illustrations are beautifully done. They are realistic and inclusive. I also like how Becky Carey explains Down Syndrome to her readers. Not everyone is aware of it, so I think it is important that we inform our students. The story is easy to comprehend. I would recommend this book be read to kindergarten - third grade, although it can be used in older grades, depending on students' exposure to the topic.
47 Strings: Tessa's Special Code was published in 2012. It is a 2013 Benjamin Franklin Award silver medalist for children's picture book. It has not been reviewed a lot, but I think it just needs to be shared more.
I absolutely adore this book. As a mom to a son with Down syndrome, I appreciate the sensitivity and love with which this book explains the differences and similarities a child with Down syndrome shares with her typical sibling. The explanation and illustrations of what Down syndrome is are very helpful and age-appropriate; 47 strings is a reference to the extra chromosome that causes Trisomy 21. This sweet story is a great way to learn about disability and diversity.
