Okay, so I won this one a few years ago and forgot all about it. Honestly, I can’t say that I’m sorry about that because this one was all kinds of nope. A total DNF.

From the start, the characters were weird and whiney and so out there in left field that I just should have stopped before I started. Then Sofia obsessively sings/quotes the lyrics to Red Rubber Ball by Simon & Garfunkel. Yeah, I’ve never really been a big S&G fan and that song drives me up the wall. So, the books already on shaky ground then Sofia sleeps with her wanker of an ex, who happens to married. And she knows that he’s married. So, yeah, DNF for me.

I was looking for a book with a pregnant MC for a challenge and the blurb for this seemed okay. However I almost gave up in the first few chapters. The writing didn't really flow and I was stumped for a moment when a marriage proposal is described by the sentence: It might not have been some grand ordeal to most people, but to me it was so special that it couldn't have been more perfect . In addition, there's a character who is being mourned for an untimely, tragic death after being in a coma for 5 months. I imagined a mugging or car accident or something, but actually he tripped walking through a door and fell. I burst out laughing at that piece of silliness - whatever happened to a plain old concussion? Still, I didn't feel like looking for another book so I soldiered on.

After Sofia meets Erik, there were several chapters of the format: I can't keep my eyes/thoughts/hands away from you --> I give in to these overwhelming feelings --> I remind myself that I am not worthy/I am damaged goods/this is unwise/you couldn't possibly want me --> one of us runs away/stalks away/bursts into tears/withdraws. Anyone who is annoyed by this should step away now,

There is also some forced melodrama in the form of exes turning up and the like. That was another eye roller for me. One of biggest annoyances however was Sofia's internal dialogue (the book switches POV's throughout). Her exclamations are all around gum balls. As in "Holy gum balls from heaven" and many other variations on the theme. Cue more eye rolling on my part. The saving grace was really Erik.

It was just ok...

I had a hard time getting past the "gumballs" from Sophia. It became really annoying. I thought she was a needless bitch to Erik at the start. The story did not have a even flow to it. I felt it jumped around at the beginning and made it hard to follow and did not establish a connection with the characters. I almost gave up on the book about 30% in. I just didn't buy into the story. I didn't care about the characters.

I liked the story line but jumps back and forth in POV and sometimes just recaps. Starts off very slow and one could easily close it back up in boredom. After Sofia escapes the city to her Grandmothers house for a fresh start she finds out shortly that her past has followed her in when after just starting a relationship she finds she is pregnant from a 1 night stand with an ex boyfriend back in the cities. Her relationship blooms and it is one happy family by the time baby Madalyn arrives.

I thought it was a little slow at the start, but it was well worth finishing, loved the end could have been better, so glad I decided to keep reading
