Behind Convent Walls

Rate this book
Behind Convent Walls portrays the life and events associated with Charlotte de Bourbon, girl-abbess of Jouarre and later devoted wife of William the Silent, Prince of Orange. Building on the historical framework of her early years during the French Huguenots-Roman Catholic struggle, Beth J. Coombe Harris develops Charlotte s lively story. Readers will be confronted with the marvelous way in which God graciously works out His purposes while also gaining a glimpse into an era of Reformation history. Charlotte s story displays the incalculable value and importance of godly, devoted childrearing and how the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation.

I love biographical fiction, and it was fascinating to learn the story behind the wife of the Prince of Orange (Besides, an Abbess who escapes from a convent? Who doesn't think that sounds interesting???) It was also good to be reminded what a great privileged we have in the western world to be able to own as many bibles as we want, in basically any language we want, and not be persecuted by other professing Christians for simply wanting to worship God in a simpler fashion than the prevailing church traditions dictate.

That said, this is an older book, originally published something like 80 years ago, and the language/writing style reflects that. If are comfortable reading Victorian era literature, this is actually much less flowery and excessively wordy than that. But if you only enjoy modern literature, you may find some of the phrasing and descriptions rather cumbersome.
