I felt like I needed to listen to the lessons two and three times before it started to stick and I could respond to 80% of the directives. I enjoyed listening to the CDs and speaking, but I do not know how much I will retain since there are not a lot of opportunities to speak Gaelic.

Now on to Swedish, which I might actually use.

I'm a big fan of Pimsleur, and I use their programs as my first step in learning a new language, which I have done successfully quite a few times now.

That said, this particular one is awful. They have replicated the exact same format as in Spanish, French, German, etc., but I believe it's introducing new phrases and vocab too quickly. I'm having to repeat every lesson 2 or 3 times! The word order and grammatical structure is considerably different in the Gaelic languages than the Germanic and Romance languages, so if anything, it needs to be slower. This is also the first time that I'm google-translating the lessons as I go, because although the pronunciation is quite different to what we'd expect as English speakers, I'm struggling to latch onto the vocab without seeing it. I think for this language, rather than cranking out the same formula, they needed to adapt it to reduce the steep learning curve. (I'm told the Goidelic languages get easier as you go, whereas Spanish - for instance - is easy at the start and then becomes difficult at the advanced level).
