In addition to his work as a professional editor, James Buckley, Jr., is also the author of many books on American sports that are geared toward young fans and budding athletes.
Buckley, who has founded a company called Shoreline Publishing Group to produce books for reluctant readers, maintains that sports are far more than simple hobbies or ways to burn off excess energy.
After almost a month off school, J was finally able to test on this. She read it one more time before the test and only scored 3/5. Apparently she had only read the large words on the page, and none of the little inserts they add. There were questions on the extra inserts.
This book is written as an easier read for younger students that has very elaborate photos of various vehicles. There are multiple photos in a collage format on each page that explains each vehicle in a couple of different formats. This layout I think would be very distracting for beginning readers and would not help to reinforce the fact that we need to read from top to bottom and left to right. The content of the book is interesting and matches the photo, but I think there may be too much on each page.
This book features several means of transportation. For each, it shows how they have changed throughout history. For many it also includes famous people who drive them. I liked this book alright. I’m not that big into cars and trains and stuff but some people really love it and it’s good to learn about. I would use this book in a day care/preschool to read to kids or in a kindergarten classroom to read when specifically learning about transportation and to have in the reading corner.
From bicycles to cars to trucks to tugboats to rockets, this book provides thumbnail sketches of vehicles that move. The simple informational text is accompanied by large photographs that show the things that go as they move across the book's pages. Because there is not too much detail, emerging readers won't be overwhelmed by too much text.
