Wow! I have owned this book for absolutely ages, but this is the first time I've actually read it.
The prose is lyrical, as well as being informative - the author's love for this animal and the wilderness it inhabits comes out on every page. Probably my favourite quote is from the introduction: "Every wild creature was designed and adapted to fill a special niche in the web of life. We may not like what that creature does, but then no one ever asked us to. To paraphrase Gertrude Stein, 'A wolf is a wolf is a wolf'."
The photos are amazing and there are more than a few I would love to frame and have up on the wall. They show the wolves a fit, healthy, beautiful animals, rather than the skulking, mangy killers they are often portrayed as.
I picked this book up on sale at an antique store co-op that had very few books on sale. It turned out to be a real jem. Written by Leonard Lee Rue III, a well known nature writer who in 80 pages covers all of the basics, adds much detail and explodes the myths that obscure these wonderful and somehow, still mysterious” animals. This would be an especially valuable for middle school and high school students seeking reliable material for school reports. It is wonderfully illustrated and facinating to read. This book is from the “Portraits of the Animal World” series from Smithmark Publishing. The series includes books on over twenty different types of animals.
Excellent succinct informative book on wolf history and behavior. Gorgeous photography by the author (who studies and photographs animals in the wild.). 88 page book with valuable text plus photos with explanation.
Good for a classroom library and for doing research on wolves. The pictures are very detailed and there is a lot of information in this book about wolves. I really like this book because of the topic. I have always been interested in animals as a child in school and I feel that this book will be a great tool to help get the boys in my classroom interested in reading. This text is written at a higher level, would be more appropriate for middle school or higher.
