Shadow Watcher

After Adam and Eve were sent to Earth in punishment for defying God, demons followed them. Since then, demons pray on humans and Shadow Watchers hunt demons and protect humans.
As a shadow watcher, Sophie’s duty is to watch over humans. But there is demon blood in her, blood from a monster who killed her parents, blood that brought her back from the dead. Not too long ago the monster’s blood took over her will, driving her into a killing spree and a suicide attempt.
Now she is back to her senses trying desperately to atone for her past mistakes. She has sworn to kill twenty five demons and trade their lives for his ex-human boy-friend’s life. But her brother, the shadow watcher’s leader, wants the human dead and orders Ryan to kill him.
Fate has it that Ryan and Sophie meet and fall in love before they know who they really are. Now they must decide between love and duty unless the demons Sophie hunts kill them first.
Romance and sword fight intertwine in this intricate paranormal story where secrets are hidden in layers of deception and half-truths. A scintillating world I challenge you to enter at your own risk.

Well, the description says that this book is Sensual and that is no exaggeration. You could cut the sexual tension (read: strong mutual attraction) between Ryan and Sophie with a knife! But that's not all that this paranormal/steampunk romance novel offers. It also has amazing character development, great and very vivid descriptions (I could really picture the places and people, as I read), and Ashlyn also has a great writing voice. By the time I was done with this, I felt like I knew all the main characters personally!
The story is about a young shadow watcher Sophie Sinclair whose job is protecting humanity from daemons that were released into the world thousands of years ago. Mistakes of her youth have made Sophie take a vow to protect all humans, no matter if they deserve it or not. One such undeserving individual is Sophie's ex boyfriend, who had nearly killed her once.
Ryan Campbell is also a shadow watcher, though neither know this yet. He's a former cop who was there the night Sophie almost died, and who has now returned into her life quite by accident. They have a short fling, sparks fly, both know they're meant for each other, yet neither wants to acknowledge it. Talk about sexual tension!
Sophie and Ryan are working towards different goals. To resolve their issues, they will ultimately have to make the age old choice between love and duty. Which will they follow, the heart or the mind?
Although I do not usually read paranormal romance, this book really hooked me. I might need to look for more books of similar quality in the genre. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced, well written paranormal romance.

I'm so glad to find an author like Ashlyn Mathews. Having just finished Shadow Watcher I had to say bravo for her imagination and ability to seduce us with a heart-pounding but happy ever after romance. Sophia Sinclair is a shadow watcher who kills demons, particularly those that murder innocents of society and even feels a duty to save the life of her ex-boyfriend. In her heart, there's no room for more.
Ryan Campbell comes to her aid on the side of the road where her old Chevy's run out of gas. She doesn't remember meeting him before, and why would she? It was the night she died. Ashlyn has a wonderful way with expressions and I found myself reading over passages again simply to savor the unique writing style. Her descriptions are awesome and the sexual tension and pull between them is dynamic. Although both characters carry scars from their past, Ryan refuses to burden her with painful truths and partial lies.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shadow Watcher and will be waiting for more from this very talented author.

Shadow Watcher is an imaginative story, and congrats to Ashlyn Mathews for showing creativity.
Sophia and Ryan are at odds right from the outset, each on opposite ends of what, in the beginning, seems to be different goals. Sophie, equipped with special powers and a past that still haunts her, is determined to save innocent people who are killed by the very demons she hunts down. Ryan is a warm-hearted ex-cop who is hard-wired to right wrongs and protect. Both are Shadow Watchers, and both don’t know it. Yet.
In a story that molds together paranormal with sexy heat and long-kept secrets, Sophie and Ryan ultimately find out that despite their emotional fears, they’ve got a connection. Only it goes deeper than your typical romance and sexual attraction. Vendettas and past betrayals conspire against them, forcing them into a situation that not only threatens their lives but their growing attraction. Can they push past their past, save the day and, in the end, each other? You have to read to find out.

Shadow Watcher is a definite kick ass book literally! I was amazed by the amount of action in this book. It has the feel of Die Hard and Buffy the Vampire Slayer all rolled into one making it one heck of a story.
Sophie is an amazing character she doesn't take crap from anyone or anything. Ryan is just as determined and stubborn as Sophie but when the two of them come together it's like watching a fireworks display on the Forth of July! I cheered them on as well as screamed and yelled at these two. The way Sophie and Ryan come together in this story is just wow! Passion ignites and takes off like a speeding bullet that hits it's mark.
I truly liked the book and found myself wishing for more of the story. Shadow Watcher is a wonderful romance with just enough of the paranormal to entertain the true paranormal geek like myself.

It doesn't matter what realm of romance you normally dabble in--historical, contemporary, paranormal--forbidden partners that are sexy as sin still make for a great story. Ashlyn Mathews delivers a dark world full of demons, half-demons, Shadow Watchers and Death Riders. Both Sophie and Ryan have a mission to protect the weak in the human world, but have different ways of accomplishing their goal. But, in the end, true love conquers all.

While I was boggled at first trying to keep the names and relationships straight, I never wanted to put to book down in frustration – on the contrary! Ashlyn Mathews has created a rich narrative and sympathetic characters, and in the end I was very comfortable with her world-building, her twists and turns, and an ending that left me happy and hugely satisfied. Well done. I purchased this book online and have given this review freely and without monetary compensation.

I really enjoyed Shadow Watcher. The pace was fast, the story well developed and her style easy to read. Great characterization and a very satisfying conclusion. I could see the premise of this book becoming a series quite easily. I would happily ready anything else Ashlyn Mathews writes.
