The Aternien Wars #4

Counter Action

Rate this book
Master Commander Carter Rose has always been one step behind the Aterniens, but now it is time to take the fight back to his enemy. His plan necessitates him finding the mastermind of the Longsword officer program – a man who has not been seen in nearly a century.

Then out-of-the-blue, Rose receives word from Brodie Kaur, his former Master-at-arms, and an augmented soldier whom he could sorely use in the fight ahead. The problem is he’s supposed to be dead.

Travelling to Venture Terminal, a vast space station that has fallen to lawlessness, Rose must fight to contend not with criminal gangs, but with turncoat former Longsword officers who are out for his blood.

But with the help of a mysterious hooded figure, Rose and his crew uncover another Aternien plot, this time to wipe out the Union homeworld itself - Terra Prime.

A final conflict leads to a terrible loss, but also a new hope – one that could finally help Master Commander Rose turn the tide of the war.

Counter Action is book #4 of the Aternien Wars series, an epic blend of space opera and militaristic sci-fi following an elite crew of augmented officers fighting a post-human enemy styled on the myths of ancient Egypt.

Fell Short

Wow, I underestimated how important Carina was to the story. You really feel her absence in this one.

The grammatical errors in this book are far more common than in the last 3. At this point, I wonder if the author has even had someone proofread them. In addition to that, there was at least once, maybe twice, when the wrong character was mentioned.

On the topic of continuity errors; we seem to be shifting back and forth when it comes to the overseer again. Originally, it was said their "soul" was automatically backed up by -insert quantum tech gobbledygook here-. Then, in the last book, it changed to a soul block that had to be manually retrieved. Now that has changed again. During their next interaction, it appears we are back to the original explanation with a more in-depth explanation.

Overall, the book just felt worse, the character interactions felt clunky, and some of the dialogue just didn't feel right.

**Mild Spoilers from here on**

So, to return to the overseer, I distinctly remember in maybe the first book that it was said only those ranked overseer and above are connected by -insert quantum tech gobbledygook here- for real time rebirth in the event of "death" all others had soul blocks that needed to be manually collected otherwise the would be reborn from an earlier backup.

The reason I bring this up is because, during their interaction the overseer tells Carter that they have deactivated their connection to the soul crypt ( the spot where their memories are automatically recorded for their rebirth) and that if Carter defeated her she would actually die.

The only problem is, in the same explanation, she said that she was demoted to a warden, a rank below overseer. And from what I remember, wardens have soul blocks. This feels like yet another continuity oversight. If Carter killed her, based on the info given, even if Carter killed her, she should have had a soul block, and even if that was destroyed, she would have been reborn from an earlier backup. So unless there is some in-world knowledge we don't have, this just doesn't make sense to me.

Brotherhood of the Sword🗡🚀💥🔫💫
Adult military sci-fi!🚀💫💥🗡🔫💪. Fourth book in series.
Intense, gripping, emotional Well written sci-fi that makes for Great reading And imagining Of the future.
The book is also gory💀 at times because the nearly immortal long sword masters🐺🗡🔫💪 fight with different types of swords🗡 that are also energized with plasma💥.
Master commander Carter Rose🐺💪🗡🔫 is the epitome of The long sword🗡 Enhanced human. Nearly invincible, he and his crew fight for Terra prime And the humans living there.
His small crew of other loyal long swords🗡 mean everything to him.

I got this e-book from Amazon📚 with Kendall and limited.

Lately I have been reading a large number of science fiction novels and many of them are Uninteresting and poorly written at best. I have never had a book by GJ Ogden that I did not like absolutely. I highly recommend everyone of his books As quality science fiction💫🚀 With great stories. They are tales of war in space💫 and camaraderie That comes from a higher common purpose and the belief in the struggle of good against evil.

The book does end in a cliffhanger which leads to book 5 which will be out in October 2023.

I was going to take a break from this series. I just discovered it’s 10 books long, so I wasn’t sure I was going to pick up #5 or move on to something else. But I think I’m addicted.

Getting her to the only Dr alive who was alive when the Athenians were created and try to get him on their side is a mission needing slot of luck. But that doesn't stop the attacks on other planets. Carter Rose's search for his old crew continues as does his search for a cure for his XO. Another very entertaining chapter in this series with some heart breaking moments at the end. I'm looking forward to the final.

Only getting better

It seems that some opponents have no lows they won’t stoop to. I’m intrigued with the Overseer, where is this leading to? However Damien deserves to reside in the lowest depths of Hell.

Excellent

But I found myself scanning most of it. Maybe I've read too much sci-fi but the outcomes were too predictable. I found myself rushing to get to the end of each tense situation just so I could move on. 🙂

The series is amazing. The ending in this chapter reminds us all what it means to be human. One cannot escape mortality.

Great book, excellent read.

Wow, losing a very important crew member and her bot. What is Commander Carter Rose going to do now? Hopefully find his XO in better shape.

Excellent Growth

The series grows on you, as do the characters.
The struggles pull you in, post-human or human, until you feel the pain as much as the characters.
That, to me, is an excellent book... and this series continues to grow & evolve those in each subsequent book.
May I enjoy the last 7 as much and as well as I've enjoyed the first 3.
