This is a re-read for me. I read it many years ago and decided it was a classic. This time around, not quite sure. The author’s answer to everything is bracing the back. He disapproves of many training aids, like side reins. I do concur with his cross-training ideas. All in all, I would say there are a few good tips for improving riding here and there. It took me a long time to get through it because I was first using it as a reference, but then did not find it all that helpful as a reference.

This is one of the books I always go back to, when I am in the mood to revisit the basics. When I am questioning theory, who is right, modern or classical.. I always return to the old masters. I love it. It is well written, it assumes that you are not a rank beginner and some of it is plain old common sense, but it is great. Forward is the answer to most everything, listening of the rider to the horse and the horse to the rider is the basic premise. It is a dry read but that is fine considering the material, I dont need to be entertained, I need to be educated.

I love old equitation books and usually can learn quite a lot, but I really struggled to get into this. Maybe because it's a translation, I found it difficult to follow in places. Sometimes the author seemed to spend a lot of time describing the most basic of concepts, at others glossing over a phrase that could have done with a bit more explanation. Maybe considered a classic, but not one I could finish.

This is just an amazing book so far. This guy must have been so cool. It's all explained so much better than most current books.
