Vita Raven loved her life: a career in travel and a whirlwind of parties at home in London. No man had ever tempted her to give up any of it--until she met Craig Stonier.
Dubbed the "Rock" by her friends, he was a man with no apparent soft edges who offered no commitments.
Vita had to make a Choice. If she compromised her principles for desire, she couldn't live with herself. But if she continued to refuse Craig she'd have to live without the mysterious, seductive loner--a prospect she couldn't face.
Re No Strings Attached - This one is an interesting experiment in a lot of tension. The h is a vacation tour company director and the H is a lighthouse keeper, but we don't find that out until the latter half of the book.
The h is 25 and fiercely independent. Her job involves travelling all over the world to various resorts and hotels and putting together all manner of vacation packages. She only has an older sister living, her parents died in a travel accident together while the h was in her teens.
The name of the h is Vita Raven and it suits her personality, she is very lively, and flies around the world much like an intelligent bird. Her older sister is placidly settled with her doctor husband and tends to disapprove of her sister's gad about lifestyle, but the h really likes her life and has no intention of settling down for the rosy cottage and 2.4 kids.
The H on the other hand is named Craig Stonier (his nickname is Rock) cause he is a very isolated and somewhat hardened individual. He likes the ladies in limited amounts when he is available to use them, but he is very, very secretive and reserved and has NO emotional intelligence AT ALL. The h doesn't even find out his full name until halfway through the book, nor what he does for a living. They meet at a party while the h is between trips and there is an instant lust connection between them.
The h doesn't do flings tho, and so she puts him off when he tries to put the HP H mojo to work. She is a virgin at 25 and she has no intention of changing that for a man who only dallies with the HP ladylurve buffet. He winds up walking her home from the party of their first meeting and then disappearing into the mist when the h refuses his advances. The h is attracted and can't seem to stop thinking about him, but she doesn't leap before she looks and tho there is the potential for a relationship there, she isn't about to get involved with a fly by night hit it and quit sorta guy.
After a few weeks the h manages to put the H out of her mind and is travelling to Antigua, when she looks over at her new airplane seat mate and sees it is the H. He tracked her down and followed her, cause he can't stop thinking of her either. They arrive in Antigua, the h does her job tours and then the H runs off when she won't jump on his tower of power on the strength of two meetings. The h finishes her travels for a bit and then drives herself nuts for a chapter or so obsessing over the H and not being able to figure out what to do.
Then the H shows up again, and more heated arguing interspersed with passionate kissing ensues. This time the H rejects the h because she has indicated that she will be with him but she doesn't want a casual affair and the H can't commit to a woman. The H wanders off again, intent on keeping his no strings affair system going.
The h is miserable and decides to take some leave to sort herself off. Her sister, who initially wanted the h to settle down and have a brood and just stay at home, is now warning the h about getting involved with the mysterious H. The h's brother in law is practically the only voice of reason, he tells the sister to just leave the h to work it out and to quit meddling.
Then a strange older woman shows up at the h's home (she actually just barges in cause the door was open,) and we find out the H's last name, the fact that he has a son from a woman who did not marry him but the son is in his care. The woman is a huge meddler and manages to convince the h that she and the H are wildly in love and that the h must go to the coast where the H is and work things out.
What meddler woman really wants is for the H to assume full time care of his son, who spends most of the year in boarding school. Meddler woman thinks that if she can get the h to sacrifice herself for the H and marry him and take on his son, meddler woman will have done her civic duty. The h is obsessed enough that she agrees to meet the boy and then agrees to go to Cornwall.
It is on the trip to Cornwall that the h finds out the H is a lighthouse keeper. She is a bit shocked to say the least. Apparently the lightkeepers work in week long shifts and then return to cottages on the shore for their off duty time and this is where the h and son will stay - with the meddler woman and her family.
The h arrives and we meet another young woman married to a light house keeper and totally miserable, when she married her hubby he worked in a factory. Then he got the lighthouse job and she never sees him, she has two kids and the only company is the meddler woman and her compatriots. Meddler woman is completely judgemental about the young wife, (I felt sorry for her) and she pushes her opinions off on the h. The H shows up for his off duty time and we get the rest of his back story.
The H comes from a very wealthy family, but his mother married his dad for his money and then ran around and shirked her parenting duties. The dad died and the mum wouldn't even see him when he asked for her to come. The H met his son's mother while wandering about France, the H has a thing for roaming but really likes the lighthouse isolation.
The son's mother was in a bad situation that the H rescued her from. They became lovers, but the woman declined to marry the H. He gave her money and left her preggers - he knew about it, but she did not want to be with him. When the H returned from his walkabout, the woman had died and he had a son. So he put the boy in boarding school and has done his best to distance himself from other people.
The h decides she wants the H and they go back an forth on lifestyle etc, the unhappy woman at the lighthouse runs off and the H uses her unhappiness with the lifestyle to dump the h. Then he applies for a job in a Canadian lighthouse. Then meddler woman shows up again and demands that h return to Cornwall to help her care for the H's son and the kids of the woman who ran off. The h has a brain seizure and agrees as long as she doesn't have to see the H. Then meddler woman manipulates the h into staying longer and the H returns. The h makes one more attempt to get the H to marry her and finally he gives in, she dumps her career and the H, h and son move to an isolated Canadian lighthouse for the HEA.
This book was a never ending rollercoaster of angsty emo drama. I was exhausted from all the back and forth, will they or won't they, and the arguments that the other person wasn't loving the H or h the way they wanted. The meddler woman was seriously out of line IMO and the h's abandonment of all she had worked for smacked more of lust and brainwashing than any real well thought out decision making.
If you like high angst with h obsession and chasing the H after he chases her, make some time to read this one - otherwise save your need for the wrecki and go find some Penny Jordan or Sally Wentworth for some well plotted angst with a believable outcome.
