I found this book helpful. I've been working as a tech writer for over six years, but recently started a job at a DoD contractor, and am finding that there's still a lot to learn. After reading this book, I feel better prepared to do things that are new to me, like working with a team of writers, conducting formal reviews, and writing specifications for technical illustrators.
The book is from 2001, and it shows its age. Use the Yellow Pages to find tech companies in your area? Well, I guess that's technically possible. Also, tech writing tools are so varied these days. It's helpful to have something on your resume that shows you can learn, but most companies have their own set of tools, so it's not important to specialize.
Anyway, I love this field. If you're considering it, this book is a good overview.
As a hopeful future technical writer, I found this book very informative and helpful. Wicklen covers everything from the history of tech writing to dealing with engineers and the pros and cons of the field. She also includes appendixes listing academic programs and professional associations.
I came away with a clearer understanding of the industry and additional resources. Highly recommended.
