Science-fiction stories are among the most popular works of fiction today. Sci-fi can be about robots, clones, computer technology, cyborgs, life under the ocean or on other worlds—or even an alternative version of our Earth! In WRITE SCIENCE FICTION IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS, author Michael A. Schuman shows aspiring writers how to write a gripping tale of science fiction.
This follows the same structure as seen in my review of Write a Mystery in 5 Simple Steps. Authors of the genre are quoted regarding their inspiration, and writing process. A quality selection of notable books, and films, in the genre is included- this one two pages long, with annotations to pique a reader's interest. A brief examination of the thrust and unique qualities of the Sci-Fi genre is offered to give a better framework to begin, as it is so often blurred with some works of Fantasy. As the driving characteristic of the genre is Science, the author offers where resources might be found to learn more, and thus make one's story better; mentioning specifically to be sure one's sources are reliable. Then, the author notes that as accurate as one must be with the Science, the other details, such as landscapes, and characters can be abundantly unusual. Discussion of habits to increase success with writing is a vital part to the skill; a writing routine will bear much fruit. A solid mention of how to edit, and when to leave it alone to finally reach the publishing stage. The sites mentioned include Lulu, and teen-specific sites.
