No Snowflake in an Avalanche goes deep inside the world of religious extremism in America s military and political infrastructure from the perspective of Michael L. Mikey Weinstein proud Academy graduate and father of graduates who single-handedly brought to light the Evangelicals utter disregard of the constitutional principle of separation of church and state that is so essential to the nations military mission. Weinsteins war pits him and his small band of fellow graduates, cadets, and concerned citizens of varying religious backgrounds against a program of Christian fundamentalist indoctrination that could transform our fighting men and women into right-thinking warriors more befitting a theocracy than democracy.
this is Michael Weinstein's second book (the first book is "With God on Our Side" but I read this one first.
As a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and an Air Force veteran with a sterling service record, and a sterling record not only in the higher echelons of government service, but also in private industry, he has a vast amount of knowledge and experience in many different areas.
Combined with the fact that he is a skilled attorney, and a stickler for adherence to the U.S. Constitution, is the perfect person to have tackled this subject.
This subject is the ongoing presence of the extreme "Christian" right in our military and the Pentagon – – the Air Force and the Air Force Academy most specifically.
as a Jew, Weinstein experienced religious bigotry while attending the Air Force Academy, and later he also observed the growing presence of "Christian" evangelicals in the Pentagon, and the highest positions of government.
When his two sons attended the Air Force Academy, they experienced extreme prejudice from the overwhelming "Christian" leadership at the Academy and also from other students at the Academy.
As Weinstein senior was to find out, his own Jewish sons were not the only ones who were being discriminated against. He mounted an investigation in the early 1990s and both his first and second books are the stories of what was going on during the 1990s and 2000s .
it led him to found the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) and he and his MR FF fellows continue to fight the overwhelming influence of the evangelical extramiss to this day.
I highly recommend both of these books – – in light of the constant warmongering of the "right" in government, it is ever more imperative to be aware of what is going on and to join the fight to stop this in its tracks.
Why should you read this book? Because a form of fundamentalist, dominionist Christianity is being used to harass members of the American armed forces, up to and including the evangelical Christians who are uncomfortable with the idea that "Jesus loves nukes." Because this harassment is gross, illegal, unethical and immoral. Because your ignorance of this problem will not protect you.
Don't mistake me -- this is NOT a pretty book. It isn't a neatly laid-out argument or a plea to find middle ground and consensus. It is a flat-out rejection of what Weinstein calls "the Fundamentalist Christian Para-Church, Military, Corporate, Proselytizing Complex," and Weinstein backs up that moniker for over 200 pages.
