Always read the fine print.

This is especially true of fairy godmothering contracts that cannot be destroyed, transferred, or terminated.

In all her years as a fairy godmother, Nerissa has only failed to help one girl, Mara, find her Happily Ever After. Twice. But the third time’s a charm—or it had better be, since the contract she has with Mara is still in force.

Unfortunately, Mara is plotting to reunite the Elwythian Empire—something that could kill them all if it doesn’t drain all the magic out of the land. But Mara won’t listen to reason, and even worse, she has captured the legendary Firebird and is using his magic to bring about her nefarious plan.

Nerissa must make a choice between fulfilling her contract and saving the innocent girl Mara used to be, or rescuing the Firebird who not only created half of the world, but most of the magic as well.

In Firespell, we see a few of the characters from Caspell returning. Once again, we enjoy the company of Nerissa, as she learns the pros and cons of having the heart that was gifted to her in Catspell. The infamous Pickle-Prick also makes his return along with Frax, the fairy queens lap lizard. Mara the terrible is back once again, as well as the mostly talented Myles and his quiet cousin Hald. There are several new and wonderful characters in this book as well, including Alora, Myles little "non mage" sister, who becomes betrothed to Prince Breren in order to form an alliance between their countries. We also meet Eadric, Myles' younger mischievous brother that is always causing problems, but always with the best of intentions, and their cousin Rani and Breren's sister Brietta, both of which try to help Alora overcome her predicament after she arrives in Brynland.

Ok so now that we have met some of the characters lets dive in. This book begins again with Narissa, of coarse! She is the fairy godmother after all! And Frax quickly arrives to remind her that she has a unfulfilled contract with Mara, who has been released from her prison inside the staff. Narissa doesn't have a clue how she can possibly fullful the contract, but goes off to meet with Mara anyway, hoping that she can make up for failing her some 400 years ago. Maybe her years of solitude have changed her after all! WRONG! Mara is just as terrible as she ever was! She has even trapped a majestic firebird and is holding him captive and using his powers for her own. Narissa knows that she should report Mara right away, but she can't bare to think of failing her yet again, and decides that she will find a way to help Mara and in turn save the firebird as well.
While Narissa is trying to figure out how to deal with Mara and help her finally find her Happily Ever After, we get to spend sometime with Myles and his family. We discover that Myles and Hald are trying to work a seek-find spell and a charm, in hopes of finding nobles that are disappearing from all over the eight princedoms. It seems everyone, including their Uncle Mortimer, is trying to find out what is happening to the missing nobles with to no avail. Every lead is a dead end. But something very unexpected happens after Uncle Mortimer has set out on his journey that morning, a messenger from the king arrives to ask Alora for her help in sealing an alliance between with Brynland by agreeing to marry this crown prince Breren. Rani goes ahead to Brynland to prepare things for Alora's arrival. But before Alora take her leave to meet her newly betrothed, Eadric turns Myles into a frog and in trying to undo his spell, accidentaly turns Alora into a goose! In a panic Myles devises a plan, and casts a spell on a necklace that will give everyone the illusion that she is herself after sun down as she is determined to keep her part of the alliance and bring honor back to her family. Little did she know they Myles had cast a spell on a necklace for himself that would enable him to give everyone the illusion that he was a man all the time. When She leaves for her new country, Myles pretends to be a driver for her carriage.
Back at the castle in Brynland, Breren is answering to his High Queen Aowinn. He has to understand why this alliance is so important to them. Their country is defenceless without magic, they can fight any other kind of threat, but magic cannot be fought by physical means. Though Breren understands and will honor his promise to marry Alora, he feels cheated out of the future bride that he has dreamed of for so long. Looking at her picture, he can't imagine that she could ever stand by his side in a battle. How could she be his perfect queen? How could she help rule his country? Things only get worse when she finally arrives and he meets her for the first time. He can see through her illusion and believes that she has tried to trick him and sent a swan in place of herself instead of keeping her end of the alliance. He is furious!
Will Nerissa be able to break through Mara's wall built by years of solitude and hurt and finally fulfill her contract and save the firebird at the same time? Can Myles figure out a way to reverse the spells on Alora and himself, and help find the missing nobles? Can Breren see through the swan that is now Alora, and find a bride that he could actually love? Well, you will have to read and find out, I've got a frog stuck in my throat!

Professional fairy godmother Nerissa is back, and this time she has to make good a botched job of four hundred years ago. Mara of Elwythia was a princes and a damsel in distress (DID), which should have made her just like all the rest of Nerissa's charges. Only Mara screwed it up, turning, seizing her sister's throne and becoming a vengeful sorceress instead. Now Nerissa has to set things right.

Throw in apprentice wizard Myles. He wants a seat on the mage council, and he hopes to win it by finding a bunch of nobles who have recently gone missing. Add young Lady Alora, an arriviste noble girl reluctant to agree to a marriage she is even more reluctant to decline, and Prince Breren of Brynland, who'd rather be a warrior, but will marry if that's what it takes to save his kingdom. Soon you have spells gone wrong, characters in animal form, and a Happily Ever After that seems farther away than ever.

This is the second of Danyelle Leafty's Fairy Godmother Dilemma books. Like the first, it's clean, fun princess-and-fairies storytelling, somewhat tongue in cheek.

I read this immediately after the first book, because I had so many unanswered questions. Unfortunately, this answered almost none of them. It's a pretty good story in its own right, but some of the main characters aren't very likable and the behavior of others is inexplicable. With a great editor, I think this series could be fabulous.
