Since her first book, Awakening, came out in 2007, Lara Morgan has been very busy with a new project – a series for young adults, The Rosie Black Chronicles. The promised book three of The Twins of Sarantium has therefore had to take a back seat, but I live in hopes of its eventual publication,
Betrayal is in many ways more assured than its predecessor, demonstrating that Morgan is settling into her craft. The trilogy, titled the Twins of Saranthium, tells the tale of how twins Shaan and Tallis are called upon to save their world from a god gone mad. At the end of book one, Shaan was forced by the crazed Azoth to liberate the powerful Birthstone, which he needs if he is to dominate their world. We find that the Birthstone has left Shaan with very special healing skills. The twins know Azoth is not to be trusted, but can they put their faith in the four other gods who oppose him? It seems that on their world, the gods are indeed crazy.
To defeat Azoth, Shaan must take a devious route, one that appears to set her against the very people she is trying to help. Tallis, meantime, grows in strength as a warrior and a leader, and by the end of this book we see him as a potential saviour. His growth into power contrasts cleverly with Shaan's apparent descent into confusion.
Once again we have wonderfully imagined scenery and beautiful renditions of the link between serpent and rider. The battle scenes are as good as any I’ve read, and I was left with a sense of anticipation, convinced that there is an almighty cataclysm coming in book three.
However, as with book one, there is a feeling of being lost in the middle of the book. There is quite a bit of journeying around to little effect, resulting in loss of tension. Even so, the final scenes lead the book to go out with a bang and I am really looking forward to book three.

Tallis konnte Shaan aus den Fängen von Azoth befreien. Doch zu welchem Preis? Der uralte Pakt zwischen Menschen und Drachen liegt noch immer in Scherben und Azoth versammelt seine düstere Armee um sich herum um das Reich Sarantium zu unterwerfen.
Nachdem Shaan langsam wieder zu Kräften kommt, gilt es einzig und allein ihre Gefährten zu stärken und ihren verzweifelten Plan in die Tat umzusetzen um die Menschen und ihre Gefährten zu retten, auch wenn es für diese einem Verrat nahe kommt.
Der einzige Lichtblick ist ihr Zwillingsbruder Tallis, der ihr bei steht und mit dem sie stetig verbunden ist.
Für Shaan zählt die Hoffnung der hinter ihrem unliebsamen Plan steht und den Weg für ihr Vorhaben ebnet, denn wenn sie diesen nicht geht, wird Azoth alles vernichten was ihr lieb und heilig ist…
Meine Meinung:
Nach dem ersten Band war ich total angefixt und wollte unbedingt herausfinden, ob es Tallis und Shaan gelingen wird gemeinsam mit ihren Gefährten die Schlacht zu schlagen und den mächtigen Gott der Finsternis Azoth zu stürzen. Da es sich um eine Trilogie handelt war mich bewusst, dass es gewiss noch einige Informationen und natürlich Intrigen mit sich bringen wird, bis es zum eigentlich Schlag gegen die finsteren Mächte kommen wird.
Für den zweiten Band dieser Trilogie geht es die Autorin sehr gemächlich an. Durch das einbinden verschiedener neuen Informationen und natürlich grandiosen Überraschungen ( mit denen ich persönlich so absolut nicht gerechnet habe) gestaltet sie diesen Band sehr interessant. Jedoch hat die Sache leider auch einen Haken, denn die Spannung, die den ersten Band sehr spannend und fesselnd gestaltet hat, ging hier leider etwas verloren. Zwar erklärt es sich in der Handlung weshalb dieser Band mit „Die Verräter“ betitelt wurde, jedoch ist dies auch so wirklich alles was die Spannung aus macht.
Es kommt zu unliebsamen Längen, die den Lesefluss zwar nur wenig beeinflussen, jedoch die Spannung komplett aus der Handlung verschwinden lassen. Die Schlacht die gegen Ende des Buches ihren Lauf nimmt, kann die Spannungsflaute leider nicht mehr wirklich beheben. Das Ende an sich hat es jedoch komplett in sich und durch seinen sehr offenen und traumatischen Ausgang entfacht das Buch dennoch die gewünschte Neugier auf den Abschlussband dieser Trilogie.
Was der Autorin auf jeden Fall absolut gelungen ist, ist das einfügen neuer Charaktere und das in Szene setzen der altbekannten Protagonistin. Auch wenn mir der ein oder andere leider etwas auf den Geist ging mit ihren egoistischen und unlogischen Ansichten, so mag ich dennoch allesamt sehr und bin neugierig darauf, wie sie sich schlagen werden, wenn es um ein Miteinander, statt auf ein einer gegen alle, drauf ankommt.
Auch die Verluste gehen einem sehr nahe und machen diese Geschichte so emotional. Die Gewalt und der Hass präsentiert die Autorin auf einem Silbertablet und schafft es somit den Leser nicht nur zu fesseln, sondern seinen eigenen Groll gegenüber von Azoth zu entwickeln.
Shaan machte für mich die größte Entwicklung der Protagonistin durch. Auf ihren Schultern lastet eine enorme Last und das Leben der Menschen. Klar braucht sie so manchen Stupser in die richtige Richtung und dennoch ist sie sehr selbstsicher, trägt das Herz am rechten Fleck und zeigt in den Momenten in denen man am wenigsten damit rechnet, dass sie ein Mensch mit Schwächen und Ängsten ist, die sie zwar unter Kontrolle weis und sie dennoch zu der Person werden lassen, die sie so liebenswert macht.
Der Schreibstil der Autorin ist wirklich super. Sie beweist mit Leichtigkeit, dass sie auch trotz der entstehenden Längen in der Handlung, ihre Leser zu fesseln weis. Mit ihrem Ideenreichtum strotzt sie den Schwächen und mit den Wendungen und Überraschungen fesselt sie ihre Leser an die Handlung.
Fazit:
Auch wenn dieser Band um einiges schwächer ist als sein Vorgänger und mit etlichen Längen zu kämpfen hat, so trägt er doch einen sehr wichtigen Teil zu der Entwicklung dieser Trilogie bei und entfacht unweigerlich bei dem Leser die gewünschte Neugier auf den Abschlussband!
Für mich eine Reihe, die auf jeden Fall einen begeistern kann und sehr zu empfehlen ist!

Vorab, man sollte den ersten Band gelesen haben, um der Handlung beziehungsweise der Geschichte flüssig folgen zu können, ohne groß gespoilert zu werden. Dieses Buch ist eine gelungene Fortsetzung der Reihe und hat mich auch wieder in den Bann gezogen. Es geht hier auch weiter mit den Drachen und ihren Drachenreiter. Die Story ist auch wieder spannend, obwohl die Spannung hin und wieder mal nachlässt. Aber ich empfand es als nicht so tragisch. Man sollte sich allerdings Zeit nehmen, das Buch zu lesen, den hier liest man auch mal zwischen den Zeilen. So muss man vielleicht ab und zu über das gelesene nachdenken und es erstmal sacken lassen. Ich konnte das Buch dadurch nicht in einem Zug durchlesen. Dadurch konnte ich die Geschichte auch voll auskosten, sodass ich mich nun auf den letzten Teil der Reihe freue und auch gespannt bin, ob die Geschichte genauso spannend wird. Die Handlung ist auch stilsicher und abwechselnd, wodurch es nicht langweilig wird. Es ist zwar etwas vorhersehbar, aber trotzdem immernoch spannend. Es ist aber auch nichts für schwache Nerven, den diese Story ist brutal. Man merkt auch, das hier die Drachen als mächtige Wesen geschätzt werden und nicht nur als Reittiere. Ich finde, in der Story sind sie die nützlichsten Wesen.
Shaan und Tallis kennt man beide schon aus den ersten Teil der Reihe. Anfangs konnte Tallis Shaan nicht wirklich leiden, doch langsam entwickelt sich da was. Allgemein entwickeln sich beide Charakter weiter und es macht spaß, ihre entwicklung zu verfolgen. Beide sind Tapfer und mutig, sowie auch freundlich. Sie waren auch wieder authentisch und wunderbar beschrieben. Manchen Charakter konnte ich nicht ganz nachvollziehen und waren mir dadruch nicht wirklich symphatisch. Aber das gehört nunmal zu einer guten Geschichte dazu.
Der Schreibstil der Autorin war hier auch wieder angenehm spannend zu lesen. Es ist wirklich ein toller Fantasy Roman. Die Sicht wechselt sich dabei immer mal wieder, wodurch es auch abwechslungsreich ist, als das man nur aus einer Sicht liest. Hier kommen auch vermehrt die Götter ins Spiel und deren Machenschaften. So vergewaltigt ein Gott viele Frauen, der aber nie seine Ur-Ur-Ur Enkelin anrührt, solange diese ihm verspricht, sich hinzugeben wen er etwas tut. Ich bin neugierig, was der letzte Teil bringt und warte schon ganz ungeduldig darauf, das dieser endlich erscheint.

Das Buch Sarantium – Die Verräter ,ist der zweite Teil einer Trilogie. Bereits der erste Teil hat mir sehr gut gefallen.
Shaan wuchs als Diebin auf und bekam eine Chance von der Staße wegzukommen. Neben dem Kellnern arbeitete sie in den Drachenställen. Schnell fand sie heraus, dass sie die Drachen verstehen konnte. Auch Tallis ein Clansmann beherrschte die Sprache der Drachen, was seinen Landsleuten nicht gefiel. So wurde er aus der Wüste verbannt. Shaans und Tallis Leben waren auf eine besondere Art miteineinader verknüpft. Nur gemeinsam konnten sie gegen Azoth den grausamen Herrscher über die Drachen kämpfen, um vielleicht eine kleine Chance haben zu gewinnen. Azoth wurde aus dem Zwielicht erweckt und stellte eine Armee auf, um die Heimat von Shaan zu unterjochen. Mit Hilfe des Schöpfersteins konnte er die Menschen in Drachenwesen verwandeln und ihnen seinen Willen aufzwingen. Die Drachen, glücklich über die Ankunft ihres Herrn, waren nur zu gerne bereit sich wieder auf seine Seite zu stellen. Nur wenige Drachen blieben dank Tallis Hilfe den Drachenreiter erhalten und fürchteten die Herrschaft von Azoth. Die vier Göttergeschwister Azoths stellten sich gegen ihren Bruder und wollten helfen ihn zu vernichten. Shaan ahnte schrechkliches. Von den Geschwistern ging nichts Gutes aus und so stellet sie sich gegen ihre Leute, was sie als Verräterin dastehen lässt.
Obwohl Shaan und Tallis die Protakonisten sind, sind andere wie Rorc, Tuon, Mailun u.s.w. auch Figuren, die einem ans Herz gewachsen sind und eine wichtige Rolle in der Geschichte spielen. Ich fand, sie alle sehr authentisch und sympathisch. Mit jedem habe ich mitgefiebert. Die Geschichte war sehr spannend und abwechslungsreich. Am besten hat mir die Wüste gefallen, wo die Clansleute lebten. Ich gebe dem Buch vier von fünf Sternen.

I have to admit didn't read the 1st book in the series, but I was tempt by all those elements - flying dragons (serpents), a city by the sea, a god returned to his world after thousands of years to seduce those serpents into fighting against the people who rely on them, in order to bring the populace under the god's dominion, Twins separated at birth a heroine whose troubled dreams are just the start of things to come...How you can resist this kind of stuff?
The story had been told from alternate perspectives, of Shaan’s and her twin brother - Tallis’, all along fighting to understand who they really are and struggled with the powers within them. We find that the Birthstone ( The one that she forced to give to Azoth) has left Shaan with very special healing skills.
They kept trying to save their world from Azoth a god gone mad with his terrifying army of human‐serpent warriors.
To this Boiling cauldron the author add ,four Lost Gods.They have just awoken, ready to reclaim the Birthstone currently in Azoth's possession. But rather than the saviors Shaan and Tallis needed, they begin to exert terrible control of their own, over the people of Saranthium. It seems that on this world, the gods are totally insane.

I loved the feeling that projected from the lines of the story. You actually. can feel the heat and the humid of this world, the colors are strong and bright and the thoughts and feelings... it so rich with them like a good gravy.

The sky was washed pink with the dawn. Beyond the flat topped roofs of the city, the warehouses and jetties of the Great Port jutted out into the dark water of the bay. The massive main pier was like a stone arm pointing to the rim of the world and the sea a sheet of dark silk. The ships at anchor barely moved in the low swell

Night as Fallen over the ancient city and with it came the rain, drifting like a mist over the walls. The moon was hidden behind the cloud and street lamps guttered and flared in the wet, casting a dim, orange-hued light.

It been raining all day and the scant of wet sand and decaying leaves filled the air, the palm fronds dripping water onto her head as she passed beneath them. Beyond the trees she could hear the sea pouring relentlessly against the shore...
On either side, where homes must have stood, were churned and smashed areas of stone and wood, some marked by charred circles of ash, some of the trees that still stood had their brunches slashed one one side as if something flying past had swiped at them;others simply been uprooted...
Anyway, let go back to the book... I don't know if if it the 2nd sequel, but I had the feeling that Lara still building things for the pick that will come at her 3rd book... so many things felt like explanations and introductions. Beside discoveries about their growing powers the twins get to know about their family and the whys - who is their mother? father? clan? gods? and their world in general.Thier love live dimensions expanded and got deeper .... and in this the reader can mature alongside with them.
Maybe the pace seem to slow because of it but, the if i can predict correctly all will be answered at the end of the day and all this pieces will fall into their places. But I still really want to know how the story end so I'll wait to the last book in this trilogy.

Während mich der erste Band der Reihe zwar nicht umhauen konnte, aber dennoch seinen eigenen Sog entwickelt hat, hat mich der zweite Teil überrascht – und leider nicht im positiven Sinne. Ich hatte erwartet, dass es jetzt vielleicht besser und das Potenzial ausgeschöpft wird. Pustekuchen. Stattdessen zieht sich die Geschichte über etliche Seiten hinweg, ohne in Fahrt zu kommen. Ständig hat man das Gefühl, Szenen wären unnötig oder hätten gekürzt werden können. Schlimmer ist allerdings die Tatsache, dass es wirklich schwerfällt, mit zu fiebern. Während einige der Charaktere im ersten Band noch sympathisch waren, bleiben sie diesmal deutlich distanzierter. Daher konnten mich durchaus bewegend intendierte Momente des Buches nicht wirklich abholen. Eine positive Überraschung war aber Shaan, mit der ich ja eigentlich so meine Schwierigkeiten hatte. Sie ist zwar immer noch eine sehr eigene Persönlichkeit, aber entwickelt sich hier positiv. Ihr kommt eine bessere Rolle zu, die sie nicht mehr zu hilflosen Maid verdammt, die gerettet werden muss. Ganz im Gegenteil macht sie sich stattdessen selbst daran, einen Weg zu finden, Azoth zu besiegen. Die Kurzbeschreibung des Buches spoilert dabei leider extrem und der Leser sollte die Ereignisse nicht zu früh im Buch erwarten. Am Interessantesten war eigentlich die Handlung um die Clans der Wüste und stellte tatsächlich einen Teil dar, den ich gerne gelesen habe. Es gibt durchaus viele interessante Momente, die gerade auch für die Charaktere von Bedeutung sind, aber diese werden teils übertrieben oder nur nebenbei inszeniert. Es wirkt gleichzeitig als würde man eine zum Bersten vollgestopfte Geschichte lesen, aber gleichzeitig nicht richtig vom Fleck kommen. Und wenn die Handlung dann ins Rollen kommt, überrumpelt sie einen und…das Buch endet. Trotzdem bietet das Buch durchaus eine konsistente Geschichte mit schönen Fantasyelementen, bei der es aber leider oft uninteressante Handlungselemente in den Vordergrund gestellt und interessante Hintergrundinformationen außen vor gelassen werden.

Shaan and Tallis have escaped from Azoth - the fallen god - but he has enslaved the people of the Wild Lands and amassed an army of human-serpent warriors. Betrayal is a vibrant and vividly written story of dragons, a fallen God, four other slightly psychotic Gods and the twin saviors that were separated at birth. Saranthium is a world under siege by Azoth who wants total domination, while under the control of the Gods wield their power in for form of tyranny. Shaan and Tallis are meant to save the people, but they must learn to control the power they each harness or be turned into weapons themselves.
Shaan is smart and cunning, but she is having a hard time resisting the pull of Azoth. Will she succumb to fallen God? Or does it only seem like she is against her people? Tallis grows stronger every day and he could possibly be the savior the people need. The contrast in their personalities, actions and descriptions is compelling. In my opinion, the story is leading in a direction that these two will have to come together in order to defeat the threat of Azoth and the crazy Gods.
Full of action, suspense and intrigue not to mention flying dragons and completely immoral Gods, Betrayal is full of plot twists, scheming and manipulation. The world was described so colorfully with the words that were used, I could see Saranthium in my mind while I was reading the story. It will be interesting to see where the author takes the twins. Will they embrace their power and overcome the odds that are stacked against them? I guess we’ll find out in book 3!

I love the cover, but I'm very fond of dragons and the fantasy world. I didn't read the first one but I plan on going back and reading it now that I have read this one. This is the first book I have read by this author. The author has quite a talent in the fantasy world. I loved that I could connect to bother Shaan and Tallis from the book and could experience the same emotions. The story is amazing with its adventure, suspense, action, and much much more. The plot is great and this is a very easy fast read. I just love this book and can't wait to go and read the first. Can Shaan and Tallis resist the assault from the Gods? Can they overcome the mounting odds and powers? This is a WOW read and can't wait to read more from this author.

I picked up Betrayal because I remembered the promise of Awakening. I wanted to find out the answers to some of the questions from Awakening. Plus the lure of an adventure in a world of Serpents and old gods was too exciting to ignore.
Betrayal was an exciting read: magical powers are unfurled, secrets revealed, more interesting characters, etc. A fast-paced read with suspense built up right to the end. I also like my fantasy to be imbued with some romance and Betrayal really just hit that sweet spot. All in all, a very comfortable read for me.
I have enjoyed Betrayal more than Awakening because as the world is firmly set-up in Awakening, there is plenty of development in terms of characters and plot. It was an easy and enjoyable read that I read in pretty much a single sitting. I cannot wait for the next book! Please hurry, Ms Morgan!

Lara Morgan has an exceptional gift with words to draw you into the story that you can find it hard to put it down again. Book 2 in the Twins Of Saranthium Trilogy brings a drive for power, romance, betrayal, and a war to defend their honors and their lands from darkness. I love how Lard describes the battles they encounter, you almost feel every blow. I can't wait for book 3 to see how this war will end and what will happen to the lands and the clans. If you liked Lord Of The Rings, you will enjoy getting sucked into the world that is Saranthium.
