OK, so this was supposed to be the first day of my new, totally fantastic life as a Port Angeles School Titan Cheerleader. BUT instead, it’s the day that I, Madison Jane Hays, got rejected from the Titans and forced to join the dreaded, B-Squad Grizzly Bears. That’s right. My name was sandwiched in between Jared “Jazzhands” Handler and “Toxic” Tabitha Sue Stevens. Oh, and the girl who can’t even speak English, Katarina Tarasov. Yup, we’re one big hairy family. I went from being a god-like Titan to a lowly Grizzly in like, five seconds. My life. Is Seriously. O-V-E-R. I mean, who cheers at chess matches??!! I’m never going to make it to Nationals with a team like this. All I’ve ever wanted to do in life is cheer for the Titans. My mom (the most gorgeous, youngest ex-Titan cheerleader of ALL TIME, BTW) must be so disappointed! How she ended up with such a spastic daughter, I’ll never know. What I DO know? If I don’t whip this team into shape fast, I’ll literally DIE from embarrassment. Thank goodness I have my BFFs Lanie and Evan to keep me sane—otherwise, I might SERIOUSLY lose it.
When Maddy's triple flip becomes a major FLOP during tryouts, the whole gym echoes with the snickers from the Titan cheerleading Katie Parker, Clementine Prescott, and Hilary Cho. Forced to join the challenged B-Squad Grizzlies instead, Maddy realizes that to become a Titan she'll need to whip the Grizzlies into shape first. Will Maddy ever land on top of the pyramid with a squad like this? Maybe not, but when her awesome designs for new Grizzly uniforms get revealed at a big game, even the Titans are overheard whispering her name. Does this mean what she thinks it means?
Zoe Evans was very upset that her school did not have a cheerleading team, so instead she joined the Pep Squad where she raised school spirit while wearing a football jersey and a tennis skirt. Zoe has written over twenty books for readers of all ages. A graduate of Columbia University, she is also an experienced children’s book editor. Zoe loves reading, eating oysters, and of course, cheering.
Every once and I while I find a book that I remember being on a shelf in some store during my youth and I go... yes, I will read this one.
I found Confessions of a Wannabe Cheerleader on sale at a local establishment and figured, why not give it a go? It was a time to jump back into my childhood nostalgia. My inner child who wanted to be a cheerleader LOVED this book. I did cheerleading as an extracurricular for a few years and I absolutely loved it. It was positive, fun and energetic! It was a perfect sport for me. This book brought back the smiling and happy memories from those years, even if that wasn't the intention for this book.
This screams mid 2000s middle grade/pre-teen. It dates itself with references to P!nk, Lady Gaga and Rihanna, so I'm not 100% sure how it will stand up today. These singers are still relevant, but Rihanna hasn't come out with new music in ages. It might hold up... but I doubt it'll be as mainstream as just using simple references to fun pop tunes instead.
The book itself? It's middle school drama at it's finest. Girls being snobby to one another for liking boys, girls being super competitive over trivial things, and lots of "big issues" that us adults don't see anymore. It is literally perfect for the middle grade audience. It brought me back to those high emotion times back in grade school. It's a great read for that age group and I applaud Zoe Evans for making it enjoyable (even to my adult self!).
While I won't be continuing on in this series (unless I accidentally stumble upon a few more books in the series by accident), I think it's absolutely wonderful and it made me smile. It was such a blast from the past and I highly recommend it for those cheerleading loving middle school readers.
I absolutely loved this book, it was so much fun. I love a good book that has it all: friendship, boy drama, girl drama, The weird teacher, a happy ending, and an all out good read. The book has amazing sketches througout ans the page numbers are bubbled with the caption “Give Me A…” All of these little details add up to a great read!
I am now reading the 2nd book in the series because I am anxious to see what happens next with the titans and Bevan! Oh and I almost forgot… I absolutely love Jared, what a character, he made me laugh so much!
Madison is a cheerleader, or make shift cheerleader, who is apart of the Grizzlies squad. This group was formed so that anyone wanting to become a cheerleader and show their team spirit could participate if they weren't exactly accepted on the actual school cheerleader squad. Madison fills us in on who's hot and whose not around the school. It really doesn't help her current situation that her mom is the Grizzly coach. It's pretty embarrassing when she is called “sweetie” during practice. Madison learns that the Grizzly squad, who never really cheer at real games, are going to the Regional Qualifier, with the Titans. Madison finds juggling a new boyfriend, whom she hasn't had a real date with yet, getting the Spirit Rules book, which will help her squad learn how to cheer and assisting her best friend with an article, can keep a girl really busy. On top of that her mother is dating a fellow teacher. Readers will have fun reading Madison's journal in which she describes in great detail the day-to-day activities of a cheerleader. Quirky pictures give readers a clear view of what's on her mind. Whether your a cheerleader or know of one you will giggle and cheer for Madison and the Grizzlies. Young readers will flip the pages while learning about life in school and will be interested in those they can relate to.
You Can’t Come In Here! is a book that takes place in nowhere America, which is appealing to the average tween/teen of our time. In this second book of thrill series Creepover, we find a lead protagonist, Emily being a good doer and attempting to befriend her new neighbors, who are home schooled. The plot has many turns, Ethan and Hannah can’t ‘come and play” all of this occurs for unsure, eerie reasons, there is a beast/werewolf in their front yard and even when Emily is allowed into their home, there are rooms that are forbidden to enter. So, what does any intelligent girl to do? Plan a party and try to introduce Ethan and Hannah to Emily’s life-long buds from school Vicky and Drew. This story is not a horror, thriller that would keep a middle schooler up at night from terror. The story is fast-paced, entertaining and fun to predict. At the end, everyone is friends and the weird happens are sort-of explained away, but there is still a thread of suspense.
Cute. Ramblings and drawings of a girl who didn't make the a-team cheer squad, but is trying to do the best with what she's given. Will appeal to fans of the Dork Diaries and cheer fans.
