the illustrations seemed dated to me, (though just now I realize it's a 20yo book!), but still it feels like more than that

This is a sweet, lyrical story about being able to soar among the birds, but also breaking free of the family and the fear that is associated with that independence. The narrative is short and reads almost like a poem. The illustrations are gorgeous.

I read this book while shopping for a present for our girls during a visit to the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
