Rebecca Winters, born Rebecca Brown Burton, was the author of over 175 romance novels published with Harlequin, delighting readers worldwide for more than 35 years. Her stories, translated into many languages, have sold nearly thirty million copies. A French teacher turned novelist, she combined her love of language, family, and storytelling into a remarkable literary legacy.
In romanceland, amnesias are often caused by the too-convenient car accidents so it was unusual to read about an amnesia that was caused by a credible sports head injury – in this case, from hockey.
While in their late teens, the H/h had a shipboard romance. The hero, a Swiss, was en route to his hockey training and the heroine, an American, was about to enter a language immersion program in Switzerland. They arranged to get married shortly after they docked in Europe. However, unbeknownst to the heroine, the hero sustained a life-threatening head injury on his first day of hockey practice and as a result, lost his memory of the few weeks before the accident. When the hero didn’t try to contact her again, she assumed that he left her and she returned to the US to give birth to their daughter.
Fast forward 12 years and an unread letter turned up in the guy’s possession. He then establishes contact with the girl to discover what happened in that time erased from his memory.
The story didn’t dwell on anger and resentment for long. Instead, it focused more on how two mature persons coped with the happy reunion of father/daughter and the uneasy blending of the old family (the hero has an adoptive nephew) with the new. The daughter’s reaction is a little bit too understanding to be realistic but the nephew’s feeling of displacement is more authentic. The hero was accommodating of the heroine’s boyfriend – too accommodating, perhaps. It would have been better if he showed some signs of jealousy.
Because of the (refreshing) lack of graphic sex, this book would be good for young teenagers and those looking for a clean romance.
Great story! I do think some things could have been more described though. And the end was a little rushed, would have like to have read more about what the main characters felt for each other. A lot of the time I got confused with who was talking as well. The children in the story were also quite mature and well spoken for their ages. Other then that I enjoyed reading this book and couldn’t put it down. 👍
Was a great story of long lost love found again. This is a heart warming story of Tris who years before was an aspiring hockey player who was injured and had amnesia. His nephew found an old letter to him telling of a woman's love. He didn't remember her. His nephew contacts her. Rachel has secrets. Tris goes to her. The story is one I will enjoy rereading again. I have enjoyed many books by Rebecca Winters this is one of the top five of hers.
I appreciate the author for her "Clean romances" but this time the secret baby angle didn't appeal. Probably because its very similar to to another book of her's - Matrimony with His Majesty.
