Bringing wisdom to strengthen the relationships that matter most, Home with a Heart is an inspirational collection of stories from America's foremost family counselor, Dr. James Dobson. These touching and sometimes humorous stories offer encouragement and insight on everything from temper tantrums to trusting your teen, early childhood to empty nest, and avoiding arguments to achieving a high voltage marriage. With each writing, the author's hope is to make a small contribution to the relationships that matter most--those that thrive in the home--where the heart is.
A licensed psychologist and marriage, family, and child counselor, Dr. James Dobson was a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. For 14 years Dr. Dobson was an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and he served for 17 years on the attending staff of Children's Hospital Los Angeles in the Division of Child Development and Medical Genetics. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California (1967) in the field of child development.
Heavily involved in influencing governmental policies related to the family, Dr. Dobson was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the National Advisory Commission to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. He also served on the Attorney General's Advisory Board on Missing and Exploited Children, the Department of Health and Human Services' Panel on Teen Pregnancy Prevention, and the Commission on Child and Family Welfare. He was elected in 2008 to the National Radio Hall of Fame, and in 2009 received the Ronald Reagan Lifetime Achievement Award.
I have owned this book since the 1990's and pulled it off the shelf to re-read this year. It is a book of encouragement for families. It is also a collection of Dr. Dobson's "Focus on the Family Commentary" radio broadcasts. 90 seconds of wisdom about relationships and family topics. Each commentary uses less than 2 pages, small pages at that, so it is a good book for the nightstand where you can quickly read one or two as food for thought throughout the day. Everyone should read this book and heed it's lessons. Relationships would definitely improve.
This was written like a devotional with tiny little snapshots of advice on family and child rearing. I got tired of the hallmark card anecdotes about 20 pages in, but what upset me about it was the condescending joke he made about unplanned teenage pregnancy. I know he’s highly respected by many people, so perhaps it was his attempt at brevity that made him sound coldly flippant, but I lost respect for him early on, and couldn’t finish.
I picked this up at a massive book sale event and I am so glad I didn’t buy this book another way. While there were a couple good points ultimately this book failed to reach me and connect with me. The better parts of the writing was quotes or Bible verse that fit the current theme. Most of the topics were repetitive and too short. Very disappointed in this read.
This is the nicest little book. I've been reading it for years. It is filled with little chapters on parenting and families. I pick it up and read, then I loose the book in my house and then I find it again. Books that have self contained chapters are a favorite of mine. It was printed in 1996 and if you can find it it is a nice little treasure. My favorite chaper is on pages 8-9:Pachyderms and teenagers.
I used to listen to Dr. Dobson's broadcast on the radio every morning before I became a parent. I particularly enjoyed his way of describing the situation and how he puts everything into perspective. It is a really good book to read as well as inspirational and entertaining. It is a must-have in every family.
I was 6 when i first read this...I so love this book....until now i'm wondering...who ever might have took it..well at least I've got something good to share..and i hope that person will try to share the book to others...
I really enjoyed reading this little book, I can say that after reading this I looked back and rejected on how I did things and how I can change my habits to better my future. Despite this being a book that clearly is Christian based I was able to look past that and see the message.
