Alf Prøysen (23 July 1914 – 23 November 1970), was a writer and musician from Norway. His Mrs. Pepperpot books established him as a children's author. Prøysen was one of the most important Norwegian cultural personalities in the second half of the twentieth century, and he made significant contributions to literature, music, TV and radio.
Santa Claus is a busy man at Christmas time. While he’s the once a year mystical favorite of many all around the world, he’s just an ordinary husband and father to his own family. Who will make Christmas special for them? Who will deliver gifts to Santa’s family? This charming Norwegian Christmas tale not only answers those questions but also esteems giving of ourselves and our talents to make the holiday special for someone else.
When Carpenter Anderson sneaks out of his house Christmas Eve, in order to dress up as Santa Claus, and give his children a holiday treat, he bumps into the real Santa Claus, and is enlisted in a plan to give a treat to the gift-giver's children instead. Santa Claus will take his place, and distribute the Christmas gifts to his children, if Carpenter Anderson will visit Santa's home, and give the little elf children a treat! Seeing Santa all the year through, they think a real-life carpenter - something they've never seen before - is far more exciting!
I really enjoyed this tale of holiday hijinks from Norwegian children's author Alf Prøysen, and liked the idea behind the carpenter-santa switch - namely, that unfamiliar experiences (like meeting a carpenter) are often more exciting than those to which we are accustomed (like living with Santa Claus). I also liked the positive depiction of a working man, and the joy he can bring to those around him, by his skill and craftsmanship. The artwork is engaging, with a sly sense of humor - I loved Carpenter Anderson's expressions, when he is sneaking out of the house! - that is very appealing. All in all, this is a Christmas winner, and confirmation, for me, of my long-standing desire to read some of this author's work. I think I will have to track down some of his Mrs. Pepperpot Stories.
Igal aastal käib jõuluvana teiste laste juures, kuid tema enda lapsed veedavad selle õhtu isata. Jõuluvana teeb tisler Anderseniga vahetust, nii et jõuluvana perel on üle pika aja üks tore jõuluõhtu.
I can't believe that I haven't added this book sooner to my goodreads- while I have not had this book since 1995, that is when I was first introduced to this story when I lived in Norway as an exchange student.
Each year, I pull out this book (in English) and enjoy the illustrations, and also love listening to it on audiobook in Norwegian...we haven't listened to it in Norwegian yet this year, but I have made sure that it has been part of my children's Christmas tradition.
If you are ever wanting to add a little of Norway to your Christmas, this is the book that I would recommend!
