Rocío Bonilla Raya

EN: After studying Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, Rocio Bonilla worked in fields such as photography and advertising. Since 2010 she has forged two careers as an illustrator of children's books and a painter of murals.

I read another book with this premise not long ago, the forthcoming On My Mountain by François Aubineau. Little Bro, Big Sis is the same in that it's really two books in one; you read one story from the little brother's point of view, and then you flip the book over and read the story from the big sister's. The stories follow the same format, but are slightly different... until the ending.

I like how the siblings are viewed by each other (to the little brother, his big sister is a bossy rhino; to the big sister, her little brother is an annoying monkey). But eventually, they realize that they each have their good qualities... and just in time, because the household is about to be shaken up by a new arrival!

The pictures are amusing and fun to look at. The gimmick of the flippable book makes this kind of a long read, especially for bedtime. Maybe the reading could be split up over two nights. Then the kids can argue over which side of the book gets read first!

Overall, this is a fun little story about sibling rivalry. Recommended to those who already have siblings... and especially those who might be expecting another one.

Quotable moment:

Buen detalle!

Little Bro, Big Sis (A Flip-Me-Over Book) by Rocio Bonilla. PICTURE BOOK. Charlesbridge, 2019. $17. 9781623541095.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL(K-3) - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

A little brother and big sister seemingly can't stand each other. Each gets a turn to offer their perspective (flip the book over to hear the other one's side) on the terrible sibling they've got, but in explaining it they also have to admit there are some great things about their brother/sister, too. They meet in the middle of the book to express the exact same concern and bewilderment about the new baby sibling who has arrived--"Now what?!"

I. Loved. This. Book. Anybody with a sibling or any parent with multiple kids can appreciate the ups and downs of sibling rivalry and love. The illustrations are fantastic and I found myself grinning and laughing and even sighing with happiness as I read it. This is a definite winner and one I can't wait to share with friends and family.

Little Brow, Big Sis gives readers a glimpse into the ups and downs of sibling relationships. Half of the book tells of the older sister's annoyance with her little brother. How she has to wait for him at school, how he damages her toys, and is always making a mess. The illustrations portray the little brother in this part of the book as a monkey. Flip the book over and the little brother tells his version of things with his sister appearing as a rhino. He explains how she always treats him like he's too little to do anything and how she's a bully. Yet both children have to admit that their sibling does have their good points. This is the part of the story where the two children get along, however briefly. But as the two points-of-view meet in the middle, the two siblings are confronted with a new challenge. This amusing story is bound to be appreciated by any child who has siblings who drive them crazy sometimes. I certainly appreciated it. The use of the rhino and monkey make it all the more amusing. But as the children start to admit that their sibling isn't all bad, those images fade away. The illustrations work perfectly to illustrate the children's frustrations and eventual appreciation for each other. A fun book for story time or for teaching point-of-view or relationships.

Big Sis is an overbearing rhinoceros according to Little Bro, but she does have some positive qualities. Little Bro is an annoying monkey who always gets in the way, according to Big Sis, but he does have some endearing moments. As Little Bro and Big Sis consider their relationship, they realize that maybe it isn’t so bad having one sibling, especially when a new baby comes into the family.

With humorous illustrations that support the development between the two siblings, Little Bro, Big Sis is a Flip-Me-Over Book that tells the same story from each sibling’s perspective. It is a fun, funny picture book about sibling relationships and what happens when a family grows from two children to three. This is a great story for siblings to explore their own feelings towards one another and their feelings when their family changes.

A fun book of particular interest for its dual direction, flip-and-read format, with twin stories ending at the same place in the middle. The book directions correspond to the perspectives of the sister and the brother, and each views the other as a kind of humanoid animal: the brother monkey (appropriate given my son's self-identification as a Siamang for much of last year) and the sister rhinoceros (interesting!). They each have their problems with each other, but ultimately realize how much they like the other (at least their good qualities). This was definitely the most popular picture book of 2020, no doubt because it functioned as an allegory for their own relationship, which went from relatively little interaction in summer 2019 to very close friendship by end of 2020.

Little Bro and Big Sis each have their own side of the story to share, literally. One half of the book focuses on one sibling's account, and when you flip it over, you get to read the other sibling's account. The genius is when you reach the middle. The only trouble is once you've read one side, you already know the secret ending. Either way, the siblings find that they may have some common ground. It is not a super profound book, but it is cute, and kids will probably enjoy the ability to flip the book over and keep reading.

This picture book has such a great format! It tells the same story from two different perspectives: how a little brother views things about his big sister, and how a big sister views things about her little brother. They both have negative things to say, but then realize there are many positive traits to their sibling. Both stories end/converge with a surprise element! Read to find out what!

A great story that talks about why little bro doesn't like big sis, but then does find some redeeming qualities about her...but then, when you flip the book over, the story talks about why big sis doesn't like little bro, but finds some good qualities as well.

I love the illustrations especially how they portray big sis & little bro, given how they describe their sibling in the text.

A fun read & a great book for siblings, especially those having both a boy & a girl.

The story reads one way from the little brother's point of view of his sister (she's a rhino), with a surprise in the middle. Flip the book over and get the perspective of the big sister on her brother (he's a monkey, and I'm sorry, but that's a deal killer for me. The characters aren't black, but let's just not go there at all.)

This book is about the relationship between a brother and a sister. The best part of this book is its ability to provide different perspectives. We read it the first time from the perspective of the little brother. Flip the book over and you can read it from the big sister's perspective. Children will enjoy reading it. Published September 3rd, 2019. No awards. Realistic Fiction.

What a clever concept for a book! Little Bro, Big Sis is a two for one special-- start one perspective, then turn it over for the other! Both Little Bro and Big Sis are in for a surprise in the center, where their stories align. A sweet book about both the pains and joys of having a sibling.

Fascinating picture book about 2 siblings and their relationship with the other. The perspectives of each girl are told by starting the book either from one side or the other...but both perspectives culminate in the middle with a new twist to their relationship.
