Nearly 100 films set around World War II happenings are featured here in another of Citadel's entertaining film series. Most films get a two page, some as many three, listing with basic credits and synopsis, a few well presented stills and brief comments from the newspaper critics of the era.
With an intro by noted film critic Judith Crist and with some special articles discussing Hollywood involvement in training films, camp shows, etc.; pre-war propaganda; The War Years: 1942-1945; the aftermath and a small section devoted to 'The Pin Up Girls."
As the book's sub-title suggests: "A Pictorial Treasury of Hollywood's War Years."
Some of my favourites in this wide cross-section of movies of the period include 'Three Comrades'; 'Foreign Correspondent'; 'Sergeant York'; 'Saboteur'; 'Mrs Miniver'; 'Casablanca'; 'The More the Merrier'; 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'; 'Watch on the Rhine'; 'Since You Went Away'; 'Hail the Conquering Hero'; 'Objective,
Burma'; 'They Were Expendable'; 'The Stranger'; 'The Best Years of Our Lives'.
As in all these books, lots of talking points and entertaining reading and a heck lot of reminiscing!
Review based on Citadel Press original hard cover edition 1973. 254 pages; 400+ black and white photographs.

This was sprinkled with typos and other copy editing mistakes, AND they had the gall to suggest that The Great Dictator is not a great movie. Nuff said.
