The Infidel Within : The History of Muslims in Britain, 1800 to the Present

There has been an explosion of research into the experiences of British Muslims, but what has been conspicuous by its absence is a proper historical treatment of the phenomenon. This text aims to address this issue. The book is being reprinted with a new cover image in March 2009.

A comprehensive text containing a broad range of topics (law, women, politics, education, racism and Islamophobia). The book's historical content covers the first arrivals in Georgian and Victorian Britain, the 20th century to the present day. This text highlights the struggles and challenges of the first Muslim communities--and makes clear the diversity of the British Muslims. The different sects of Islam within the UK are noted. The ethnicity and heritage of Muslims are discussed, and British Muslim converts mentioned too. Explained too is the role of individual Muslims in creating a new home in the UK. The study describes the emergence and development of Muslims in the UK and the response and acceptance by the non-Muslim population and the British government (between 1800 until today). Recommended for the general UK reader and, social and cultural historians, especially, academic students and scholars.

One of the most interesting pieces of non-fiction I have read in ages. Our education system is well and truly defficient at telling much of this history. It is an excellent overview for the generalist and gives you the sources needed for deeper reading in the bibliography.
