This book covers a wide range of topics from different types of weather to climate change. Readers will be able to explore the difference between weather and climate, how to identify different clouds and how weather forecasting works. There’s information about seasons, wind, rain and snow, and the water cycle as well as weather myths from around the world – did you know in China they say “dog poo is falling” rather than “it’s raining cats and dogs”! It is fun and interesting with bright engaging cartoon-style illustrations, diagrams and photographs. The text is accessible, being presented in small bite-sized chunks with good use made of bullet points and varying fonts for emphasis, and the bizarre facts – such as adding seaweed to cow’s food could cut the methane emitted by 80% (I suspect the deadly farts page will prove very popular) - are sure to keep children engaged. For those brave souls, there are experiments to try at home such as making an exploding fizz bomb or creating a solar oven out of a cardboard box. Perfect for inquisitive 8 – 12 year olds.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I agree with 99% of what it has to say. However, the typographic design of the book is not good in my opinion. The book is intended to be read by children. Does the designer of the book think it will be more attractive to children if the book is typeset in a font that looks like it was created by a child? You don’t have to look far to see that this does not work. Just check out the title: in the word ‘CLIMATE’ the letters C and L look fairly similar. The C could be an L, except then it would not make sense. The same font has a capital A with a lean on it, so in the word ‘WEATHER’ there is an uneven gap between the E and the A.

I expect more professional book design than this from a publisher like Thames and Hudson.

Let me start by saying that the breadth of knowledge accessible in the Brainiac's Book is fantastic! I love how it is narrated by an American groundhog - how fun is that!
From types of clouds to cow farts to the driest place on earth, anything you want to know about is probably mentioned. Perfect for paging through, this will have high appeal for children interested in weather, nature, or science.
