This study guide expands the discussion begun in The Divine Conspiracy, focusing on and clarifying key issues and encouraging a fuller understanding of Christian discipleship. Here you will find:
Our Bible study group has been working through The Divine Conspiracy together for the past months—and now, with just one chapter to go, we're unable to meet until the coronavirus quarantine is over!
This study guide has been helpful in our discussions. Coming to a group meeting with nothing more than "So, what struck you about this chapter?" would not have worked with a book like this. Even though some of the questions in this guide were not clear to me or not important enough to include in the group's discussions (so I just skipped those questions), have The Divine Conspiracy mapped out and outlined like this was good. In fact, some people in the group who aren't accustomed to reading books as dense as this one found the study guide helpful to read before they opened the book itself, to help them see what to pay attention to as they read. Also, the study guide breaks the longer chapters (5, 7, and 9) into two sessions each, which is a very good idea.
As the leader of the group, I always find it more helpful to have even a so-so study guide to modify than to have to create all the questions myself, so I was grateful for this one.
Such a wonderful complement to The Divine Conspiracy. Really enjoyed having this study guide to emphasize Willard's key points and provide some further scripture and questions to ponder. Also liked the questions provided to journal about what was read. My favorite chapter in the book was chapter 9 and the study guide did an excellent job of walking me through this chapter again with a more personalized and practical application-based approach. One of my favorite passages: "While it is true that we are saved by grace, that God alone is the author of our salvation, and it is impossible to change our wayward hears on our own, it is also true that we have important responsibilities in this journey of discipleship. We must understand the critical truth that God is not opposed to people making an effort, but that GOd is opposed to our using effort to earn salvation. So God is not opposed to effort but to earning. While God's grace birthed us into the kingdom, our continued cooperation with that grace grows us in the life of the kingdom." (p. 107) It's definitely extra "work" but worthwhile in soaking up every last bit of truth from this book!
A nice resource for those that have already read the book or are currently reading it. It's great as a group workbook. Sometimes it's a little awkward or difficult to correlate with the book, but still definitely worth the time.
Using this as a guide to reread a favourite in depth, but not really necessary if you are already planning to delve deeper anyway. The guide relates to the edition as shown (e.g. page numbers) so it can be a little confusing to use it alongside any other edition. Useful for group use I would think.
I rented a house from Dallas Willard for many years and I never took the time to discuss his books, we discussed others, but I feel I missed a HUGE opportunity.
