I struggled to finish the book but persisted because it was so informative about life in China. I'm close in age to the author and the differences in our lifestyles as we grew up were mind blowing. It's also interesting to realize that the fear felt by many nations that China was intent on taking over their countries by force still persists. Meanwhile China has become such an industrial nation that those same countries now seem to be almost entirely reliant on China for so many of their manufactured goods.

The hardships experienced by the peasants, the cruel punishments meted out to those who didn't appear to conform to the current ideology and the fear which pervaded all levels of society seem to over-ride any joy.

If you want to know about life in China, Mao, The Gang of Four etc this is an informative book written by someone who lived there through those eras.
