More Than a Cowboy

Who Is Sarah’s Father?

The identity of her daughter’s father is a secret, one that single mother Haley Clayton must keep forever. For a very good reason. But when a tragedy takes the man’s life—a tragedy Haley fears was her fault—the truth comes out. And now the man’s stepbrother, handsome rancher Jared Sinclair, wants answers. Why has Haley kept the child from his family? What is she hiding? Haley can’t tell him—ever. But then Jared insists Haley and young Sarah spend time at the family ranch, where she discovers he’s not just a proud cowboy; he’s her—and her daughter’s—deepest wish.

I thought this was an interesting premise, at first. A female rodeo clown, facing down bulls. But this was actually such a hot mess, I can't even pass it on.

First, the hero is an absolute bully - he threatens, coerces, talks down to, and emotionally and verbally abuses the heroine. He's hideous, and naturally, a chrischun. No shocker, there. Yeah, his faith is a sure testimony of what to look for in churches, because this is it, right here.

The heroine is no better - she is supposed to be this strong woman, but she cowers and sobs and runs and lets him walk all over her, the ENTIRETY OF THE BOOK. She's just straight-up awful. If someone came up and threatened to take me to court? I would be *RIGHT. BACK. IN. HIS. FACE* about how he's NOT my child's father, has *NO* rights, not even a court would hear his petition, and there is NO SUCH THING AS GRANDPARENT RIGHTS, either.

He had *NO* leg to stand on. She could've taken out a restraining order (or even THREATENED one back at him!), could've pressed charges for harassment but this 'strong' woman is so damn weak I wanted to chuck her out the back of the horse trailer, I swear.

And the way he was constantly manhandling her, grabbing her arm, holding her down from behind... if this girl was raped behind a carnival booth BY HIS BROTHER, she would *NOT* be okay with him touching her in a controlling manner, not in *ANY* way. Yet Hornick has Haley just blandly letting all of this go. BAD, bad writing!!!

There's also NO way that Jared has time to breed near-extinct horses, run a ranch, plan/build fancy buildings, *AND* run a children's program by way of horses. It's too much, too ridiculous, and he barely spends any of his time doing more than running around and getting in Haley's face, anyhow.

And that's not even to SPEAK about the blasphemy the author calls 'spirituality'. "God doesn't play favorites", she says. Oh really - how about 'Jacob I have loved, Esau I have hated', or any of the verses about how God creates some vessels unto righteousness and some of us to be used to store refuse, fitted for destruction (see Romans 9, et al).

She also said that "God isn't in the business of placing His children in predicaments". Tell that to Daniel in the lion's den, or Lot covered in sores and destitute or John on Patmos, or any of the *SCORES* - literally SCORES - of children in the Bible put in predicaments, hello!!

Of course, she puts a shiny red cherry on top of her BS by going straight for Rick Warren, the "Your purpose is not prophecy" king. ((Nevermind that 30% of scripture is prophecy. That's ONE THIRD of the Bible, and he's an 'itching ear' charlatan that explains a LOT about the author's lack of scriptural standing.

LEAVE this one. Don't touch it. It's rotten.
Mine's going straight in the burn barrel.

As a teenager Haley a tragedy happened and now, she is a single mother. The person who caused the tragedy faces a tragedy which Haley blames herself. And now his stepbrother wants answers especially after seeing Haley's daughter. Can't things get straightened out between the two and where does forgiveness come in to play.

As an inspirational read, the characters of Jared Sinclair and his family are walking very close with God. Jared is human however, and suffers the loss of his stepbrother tremendously and he takes to seeking the why into his own hands. Hayley Clayton had some hard knocks in life and although she is no longer close to God, her heart is full of questions as to why he failed her in her bleakest hour. These characters were written so strongly and you felt their pain and agony as the story progressed.

The plot was simple and has been used repeatedly, but it was a book so well written, I enjoyed the story and found it refreshing and fun. The book required nothing more of me than to enjoy it for what it was.

This is one of the best books in the Love Inspired series that I've read so far...a broken woman, trying to heal, raise her daughter and deal with the pain life had dealt her, Haley needed to discover the power of forgiveness and hand her trust back over to God in order to fully heal. Parts of this book made me laugh out loud and in one part, I had to stop reading because of my tears. A very powerful story of love and faith...

This is a much heavier christian fiction book than most. Lots of preaching and heavy topics.

Inspirational romance. Some pretty heavy topics in this one. Not just a typical romance.
