Wolfgang Hohlbein is a German author of science fiction, fantasy and horror fiction who lives near Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia. His wife, Heike, is also a writer and often works with her husband. She often comes up with the story ideas and therefore is generally credited as co-author. Their daughter, Rebecca, is also a writer.

Writing short stories since age 15, Hohlbein was first recognized as an author after sending in a manuscript he and his wife had written at a fantasy and science fiction writing contest in 1982. They won and their book, Märchenmond (English title: "Magic Moon"), was published by Ueberreuter Publishing, soon becoming a bestseller and winning several awards. It is one of their greatest successes till today.

Many of his more than 200 books are translated and published in many European countries as well as in South Korea. Yet for many years none of his works had been translated into English. In 2006, Magic Moon was translated into English and published in the United States.

Stanley Corda is a college professor and a colleague of Indiana Jones. When he crashes his plane into the jungle, he finds a valley filled with golden statues. A little while later, Corda is back home. But his wife is stalked and hunted down by two men with guns and bad intentions. Luckily, Indiana Jones is there to save her. He quickly learns that professor Corda might have accidentally found the lost city of El Dorado. But there seems to be something wrong with the gold he brought back.

The concept of radioactive gold might be a bit out there but the plot makes it work. There’s plenty of suspense and action, with cool twists and turns from start to finish. I also quite love that Indiana Jones is basically trapped between a rock and a hard place, with federal agents and gangsters all knocking on his door. He has no choice but to throw himself head-first into the jungle adventure of a lifetime. And what an adventure it is. The lost city of El Dorado is a fascinating setting done right. And there’s an army of interesting characters that help make this a very fun action adventure romp. Though I would have preferred it if the adventure part of the novel had started a little bit earlier.

It’s a shame the Indiana Jones books written by Wolfgang Hohlbein have never been translated to English. What I like most about his books is that they really try to recapture the magic from the early movies, instead of the writer trying to put his own stamp on the character or the series.

The story wasn't the best but it was all worth it for the ending! One of the most original takes on the Lost City of El Dorado I've ever seen.

Awesome stuff:
- Super weird bad guy with a cool back story.
- Mutants! (Who are good guys!)
- Irradiated gold!
- Marcus Brody!

It went down super smooth and I'll keep reading these for sure.

I came across this title today and the cover unlocked some memories, remembering that I made a book review in elementary school and presented it in front of the class, I even made a small booklet as a tribute, it has to be somewhere. Indiana Jones was my hero, so much that I went through the trouble of reading this book with the help of a dictionary as I was about two years into learning Dutch. I think I read more titles later on, but can't recall which ones.

In enjoyed the read, in German. Good story, with a typical ending for Indiana Jones, although he didn’t get the girl.
