William Rossa Cole (1919-2000) was best known as an editor and anthologist. He was editor or author (or co-editor or co-author) of about 75 books, 50 of them anthologies. Three of his books were honored by the ALA: I Went to the Animal Fair in 1958, Beastly Boys and Ghastly Girls in 1964, and The Birds and Beast Were There in 1965. He was an editor for Simon & Schuster and Viking, and a columnist for the Saturday Review. He died in summer 2000, at the age of 80.
Overall, i found this book to be a book full of funny poems. However, i found the humor in this book to be odd in the way that some of the poems only children would get the humor. The poems are not too long and many have black and white illustrations on the side. Yes, the illustrations go with the book but i dont think they add too much to it. I wish there would have been more color, or bigger illustrations, or even a creative way of adding the illustrations to the book. What i really liked about this book was the variety that it had; like i noticed that some of the poems in this book were songs. I think students would really enjoy this book because their is so many different topics in the book that it would allow children of different tastes to all learn. However, this book in my opinion is more of a 4th grade and up and even fourth graders may need some help understanding. Im glad books like this one were created because i know they are a fun way to teach children about poetry, expression, rhythm, and overall a new kind of art.
