This book helps me: (1) collect the techniques I learned sporadically from pages of magazines, or other instructional books, (2) give them names (I often just took some bits and memorized it without knowing what I do) and most of all (3) take me closer to my most favorite band: METALLICA.
Now I know what these are: Power chords, notes (whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth), moveable chords, scales (major, minor, pentatonic, blues,...)... etc, etc. I can get all those concepts from any other books of magazines. But what I get from this book is that intro riff in "Jump in the Fire" is based on G blues scale, while solo in "Fade to Black" is based on the B pentatonic minor and blues scale.
This books helps me combine the concepts and techniques with examples of tunes I listen to all the time. I get to know where I am now and where to go next. I am not a musician by profession, I am just a great Metallica fan. I would be content if I can just play their songs (at least for now hehehe...).
