Il ritorno a casa di Halid si consuma così in tre giorni freddi, fangosi e febbrili, che in questo suo primo, straordinario libro Natasha Radojčić-Kane racconta attenendosi rigorosamente ai fatti, e lasciando che dai gesti, dalle parole e dai silenzi dei personaggi si sprigioni il fantasma di un paesaggio – la Bosnia consumata dall’odio, e da una guerra inesauribile – molto più vicino a noi di quanto vorremmo ammettere.

War is hell, but what is sometimes worse is coming home after the war.
Especially when it's a civil war. All the same people are there, but all are changed.
Although Halid is basically a good person, he has demons that won't let him sleep. Plus, his towns mixture of Muslims, Christians & Gypsies, means that many are not going to be happy with his choices. Halid is also haunted by a death that was a mistake.
This novel tells a story that needs to be told. And tells it very well. Radojcic has quite a talent, especially when you realize that English is not her first language. Bravo on a story well told!

Although I was partial to the author's provenience, she failed to impress me. Run-of-the-mill writing, unconvincing characters, scenes of disgust didn't hit where they were supposed to.

Non il miglior libro che ho letto sul conflitto nella ex-Jugoslavia, ma assegno 5 stelle perché fa parte di quelle testimonianze su una vicenda bellica tremendamente sanguinosa avvenuta, per il lettore italiano, a due passi da casa senza che se ne avvertisse la presenza. Ci sono tutti i fondamentali: il ritorno del combattente ("eroe" semplicemente perché sopravvissuto), l'uccisione del fratello solo perché appartenente alla fazione opposta, le divisioni etniche (cristiani ortodossi, musulmani, zingari), la povertà, la fame, l'odio per i profughi, il desiderio di rivalsa/vendetta, sulla natura, o sull'uomo. Queste sono le premesse da cui nasce una nuova società, non solo nella ex-Jugoslavia, ma dovunque. Un libro che, se inserito in una congrua linea critica, fa riflettere.

I didn't even finish this book - another book about relations between neighbours that were fighting against each other cause of religion and nationality, not bringing anything new about that.
