Although this book is just over 100 pages, it captured the attention of my 3 year old daughter who loves princesses. She found this book herself on the shelf and asked if we could read it together. She quietly sat through the chapters over multiple days and I sometimes hear her pretending she has a dog named Ugly Brother like Kylie does. It's a fun (yet simple and predictable) story where everything works out perfectly in the end (a fairy tale fit for a very young audience).
Kylie Jean is a second grader who wants to be the queen of all, and in the process learns a few things. Rodeo Queen is Kylie Jean's journey to become the queen of the rodeo by learning rodeo tricks. She has to figure out where her talents lie and how hard it is to work to try and succeed. My Review What made me smile: The instant I saw the cover I got a smile on my face. She is an adorable eight year old. The book was written simply enough for a new chapter reader to read but had a few challenge words that makes an older reader keep interest. Kylie Jean kept the suspense through the whole book as she stumbled from one problem to the next. Not only did she learn to deal with let downs and the bright side, the book teaches kids good etiquette. Ms. Peshke is a children's librarian and I thought the whole book was made just for a little girl to pick up and love. She has really put a lot of thought about keeping a child's interest while reading into this book. The illustrations by Tuesday Mourning were fabulous. They really captured the storyline well. I also loved the fact that there was a glossary at the end of the book for words that everyone might not know. It also features a book talk page to talk about the book with parents after the child is done. Best of all? The recipe included! What didn't work for me: The only thing negative was ......Nothing! I loved this book. Well other than the fact that I can't buy them for my daughter until after Christmas. In Summary: If you have a young girl who is learning to read, pick up this book. If your young reader liked "Fancy Nancy" or "Pinkalicous" she's sure to love Kylie Jean who loves everything pink! I can't wait to pick up this or any of the other Kylie books that are due out in January. Author Information: I couldn't find out much about the author other than she is a elementary librarian and loves to write. If anyone knows of a website, please let me know. This book gets an impressive 7 family thumbs up out of 7 The reviews expressed in this review are entirely my own. This book was shared with me by Capstone through NetGalley and I received no compensation for this review.
Seriously. How cute is this? I am not one to go for the sparkly pink titles (though I know my students TOTALLY do!) and I still enjoyed this beginning chapter book.
Kylie Jean dreams of becoming a beauty queen. In this particular title she decides one way she will accomplish this goal is by participating in the rodeo. As a fellow Texan of course this automatically caught my attention.
I can't help it. I loved the line when she visits the library to get a book on rodeo rope tricks. The librarian smiles but then shushes her ... and Kylie Jean tells us "Although it is true that I am known for being loud, on occasion"(29).
The story is fun. The characters are interesting (the dog is named Ugly Brother--that is just priceless!). The illustrations are winsome and quirky. There are great examples of description in terms of the writing. I think this is a winner.
There are some enjoyable (if a bit formulaic) extra discussion questions and activities at the end of the book, as well as a digital press and event kit. I was delightfully surprised to find 1)the author is a school librarian, and 2)the illustrator graduated from my alma mater.
I guess the only other thing I might say is that KJ learns to barrel race well enough to WIN in a very short amount of time. I am not sure that could really be done (if something is worth doing it takes some patience and effort!) and wonder if it might give some readers unrealistic expectations for themselves. That said ... I know I'll still be getting copies for our library.
This is the second Kylie Jean book that I have read with my daughter. I have to admit, that I am becoming more of a fan of these sweet little books with every page I turn.
I've never been one for hot pink covers because the stories are usually just fluff and rather pointless, but that is not the case with Kylie Jean. In Rodeo Queen, Kylie decides that she wants to compete in the rodeo but she has to learn a new skill in order to do so. Not everything comes easily to her, though. She tries steer roping and bull riding before finally settling on barrel racing. Once she has decided that she can handle the sport, she has to practice constantly for weeks. She learns to work hard and stick with her commitments until the end.
My daughter wants to be a cowgirl when she grows up, and this book appealed to her horse loving side. Kylie develops a special bond with her horse, Star, and learns how to properly care for her. The writing is engaging and the story is sweet, while still delivering a positive message.
The Illustrations: As always, Tuesday Mourning delivers beautiful artwork that enhances the story and provides a delightful visual aid to keep younger readers engaged.
I wish I could buy these books as ebooks. I would have purchased the entire collection by now. But alas, they are only available as paperback.
My daughter and I have never read any other Kylie Jean books before. Now I have a list of all the ones my daughter wants to read. She loved this one! I mean, what 6 year old girl wouldn't like a book with pink and glitter on the front right?
This was a great beginning chapter book. My 6 year old is an advanced reader so she was able to read this one very easily but she enjoyed every minute of it!
The story was a cute, fun story. Kylie Jean is sassy and funny and her dog has a great name...Ugly Brother! My daughter laughed everytime she read the dog's name.
As a parent, I liked that the book dealt with some let downs and how to handle them as well as some uplifting moments. I also liked how it was about following your dreams and not giving up despite different setbacks. I also liked the discussions questions in the back. I was able to make sure my daughter actually comprehended what she read (when she read it by herself).
The illustrations were also fun and quirky! I enjoyed them as well as my daughter. This book is perfect for little girls that are beginning to read chapter books.
I cannot tell you just how much I loved this little book! Well actually, maybe this can give you a clue: I am very cheap/broke (aren't we all right now?) and after reading the digital copy from NetGalley I am going to head straight out to the book store today to get the print edition of this book and the rest of the series (reviews to come later) to give to my little nieces for birthdays and Christmas. I'll probably get a set for my daughter too, even though she is too young for the series :) The writing is completely engaging, Kylie Jean's Texas twang practically jumps out of the pages and is adorable. The character of Kylie Jean is definitely a kid you want your kids reading about. She is a pretty little girl who listens to her mom's advice of "pretty is as pretty does." She works hard to achieve her goals, and is happy and positive. While her perfection might be a bit grating to a cynical adult, a child will love her...
Kylie Jean is all about the power of positive thinking, and I love that in a character. She is bubbly and focused and a Texas girl straight through. However, she is also awfully well cared for by her doting family and sometimes just has to show up for good things to happen that were orchestrated/bought/brought to life by a smitten relative. I am happy for her good fortune, but there is a touch of entitlement that rubbed me the wrong way. She got what she wanted in the end, but she still wasn't beauty queen, so her final thoughts drift to what she doesn't yet have. Grouchy reviewer? Definitely, and I have the box of tissues next to me for proof. This is a series and if she ends up queen of whatever every time, I think all but the bubbliest of kids will peel off from her adventures in search of reality.

Rodeo Queen is one of the books about Kylie Jean, a young girl who aspires to be a beauty queen. Kylie Jean goes to a cowboy parade with her family. This parade is a kick start to the Wild West Rodeo that will happen later. Kylie Jean dreams about becoming the rodeo queen of the Wild West Rodeo. She decides she is going to participate in the rodeo so she will be named rodeo queen. Kylie Jean tries several things. Will she be good enough to be named rodeo queen.
Once again, I loved all of the illustrations and enjoy the extras that are listed at the end of the book. The discussion questions and activities get children to actively participate and become active readers.
Kylie Jean is a series of chapter books for girls. If your child loves reading Judy Moody or Ramona Quimby then these books will keep your child’s attention. Kylie Jean loves taking part in any competition going on in her school or in the community. The books also shows how close Kylie Jean is with her family especially her Ugly Brother the dog…and don’t go telling him he’s a dog…lol!
I love that Marci Peschke tackled bullying in the Drama Queen book and showing Kylie Jean’s kind and thoughtful side. Kylie Jean makes kids believe that no matter the task if you keep practicing you will be better at it. If you are looking for a good chapter book to start your child reading then I recommend Kylie Jean series. Check out the study guide and cooking recipes at the end of the book.
My daughter picked out this book and started reading it to her father and I. She picked it originally because her cousin's name is Kylie, but soon she kept reading it because the Kylie Jean of the story was cute, and girlie, and interesting. We all thought it was quite fun that her dog's name was ugly brother, and her determination to become a rodeo queen make her a good role model. It's not so much about Kylie Jean wanting to be a rodeo queen as it is about working hard to achieve a dream and not giving up if there are set backs. I would encourage all little girls to read Kylie Jean Rodeo Queen and to find a dream of their own!
I love this book. It was about a girl named Kylie Jean who wanted to be a beauty queen. She entered a competition for the rodeo queen. It was a fun book to read. I am going to read more about her.
